I was just wondering if there are any enrolled members of the Ocaneechi Band of Saponi Nation or the Haliwa Saponi Nation on this site. If so I would love to find out how you learned of your Saponi heritage and if you grew up with the term “blackfoot?” Or, did you grow up with the name “Saponi?” Thanks!
September 3, 2013 at 10:14 pm #36251I, too am interested in this Tribe. I have family who would have qualified 100+ yrs ago. Would this allow my family enroll?? We live in MO and have since late 1700’s and others, early 1800’s.. Bob Woolery
September 3, 2013 at 10:14 pm #36253I don’t know if you are aware, but there is a Saponi Nation of Missouri tribe in the southern part of the state. You can look up their homepage on the internet.
September 3, 2013 at 10:14 pm #36256Anyone enrolled with those two tribes always lived there, anyone who moved away and lost touch for any length of time would not have been included. The Haliwa are particularly stringent about this. Not sure if this is true, but I’ve heard it said that you could be the chief’s son and if you moved away to Baltimore you’d be removed from the rolls. The OBSN I’ve heard allow someone to be a generation removed from the physical community, something like that. For anyone bidding for federal recognition that’s necessary.
A tribe that was taking in people who learned who they were after generations of lost identity on that score would not have any possibility of BIA recognition. The rules are set up so that Indian tribes in this country will NEVER grow and reconstitute themselves. They will remain addicted to handouts from the government and keep their enrollments limited to prevent the dilution of those entitlements.
September 3, 2013 at 10:14 pm #36257Linda, you are very correct in your BIA assessment. It goes, also, for our Tribes out here.
GStrait, What do you know about this MO “Tribe”? I’ve heard about them from this site.
September 3, 2013 at 10:14 pm #36263I was just thinking about the fact of being “enrolled” as a tribe. Were we not born Saponi? It is in our blood and in our heart. It makes it sound like we are a club and that it is something trivial. We are more than that, we are the Saponi Nation!
September 3, 2013 at 10:14 pm #36264cherosage, I responded to your question about the Saponi Nation of Missouri earlier and somehow it did not post. They are located in Willow Springs, MO which I believe is in Franklin Cty. It appears they are a good group and you could give them a call for more info.

September 3, 2013 at 10:14 pm #36269Your Welcome, Bob! Hey I was wrong about the county. They are in Howell county, on the border with ARK.

I dont think so sorry but as far as the haliwa saponi which im enrolled in they are very strict about enrolling not only do u have to be 1/4th descent of people already on the rolls your family also has to have a strong tie to this community most of the people who are enrolled is part of a family that never left this area which is halifax or warren county, NC as far as my family as far as i can trace back both of my mom and dads family always been here always been here in halifax,NC. If it was any family that moved away very long ago then i doubt they can get enrolled and plus the haliwa is trying very hard to shoot for federal recognition so they are tying to be very careful of who they are going to let in.

Mr. Richardson!
How are you cousin?
My name is Troy Hines, and my mothers family is originally from Brinkleyville Township, Halifax County, NC… We have always known through oral history, and it is visually evident, that we were “part” Native American, and descended from many of the Tribes throughout the region (Saponi, Tuscarora, Neuse River, etc.)… My grandfather, Ollie Qualls moved from Enfield, NC in the 1940’s and relocated to Connecticut… we lost a lot of Native culture due to enumeration and a custody battle in which my White g-g-grandfather took his kids away from their Indian mother (my g-g-grandmother, Lucindie Davis)… This all took place in Brinkleyville Township…
About 10 years ago, I met Shannon Richardson (your cousin) in Washington DC who was a friend of a friend. We are now pretty close, and make jokes that we’re probably 5th cousins…lol…
I know the Haliwa-Saponi tribal memberships are closed except for children, as I know Federal recognition is the priority. However, I would love to exchange stories, and see if there is any overlap or family history between our families… & perhaps any lost traditions… My mothers maiden name is Qualls and our connections to the Tribe are through our Davis, and Hardy lines… My mother goes to the Silvers family reunion every year, but I am still not sure of how we are related…
I will definitely be at the 50th annual Haliwa-Saponi Pow-Wow next year!
Peace & Love!
