Is there any one out there who would have information or examples of Catabaw Pottery or other eastern Souian pottery. I have looked at sites on the net for present day potters and their work but am interested in older examples which would be probably less painted and maybe even open fired. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Ed
March 12, 2007 at 4:06 pm #25310Hey Ed, well let me try this a second time, (the screen keeps jumping),; first check out the Catawba nations website, then the nc electronic labs and a general web search. There was at one time some images here of great archeo. pieces of pottery but they’ve been taken off this site, there are some really beautifual examples of Siouan pottery from different sites including the Berry site in west central NC.
There is a huge amount of material out there on this topic, it probably rates 2nd after lithics, on an archeologists lists of “things to see”!

Also you might want to look at Caddoan pottery and thier current potters, aswell there once was a fine lady named, Anna Belle Mitchell, a revivalist of the western Cherokee people, and ofcourse the local folks in and around NC and VA. The Eastern band of Cherokees, Samantha Owle, the Branham people from Va and Linda can tell you about the local lady named Sen~ora

I hope this helps.
March 12, 2007 at 4:06 pm #25312Thanks Tom, I have looked at some of these but I also saw some other sites by your suggestion. It seems most of this is of a more current nature and even some personal adaptations by later generations. I did find one site that described the thin walls of the pottery and one site described the exterior glaze or finish and I believe being open fired. The newer seems to be better glazed and perhaps oven fired. I had seen a pot some 18-20″ tall with 3 “handles” if you can call them that. It appears to have been open fired to me with a motled black-brown-orangish coloring now faded and the pot somewhat pitted. The lady said it was catawba pottery and I was interested in getting some infor on it. I am going to inquire futher how she identified it. Thanks again, Ed
