Mel,
You do say that “It comes down essentially, if not entirely, to a struggle between Cherokee who are mainly of white ancestry and Cherokee who are mainly of African ancestry.” The woman that wrote that article in the L. A. Times says that what you say is not true. I would like to know how you can determine what Heather Williams and Chief Smith are thinking. In doing this it certainly looks like someone is making them look like a liar. Or is it just plain old character assassination! You say they are not telling the truth but don’t give any proof of that at all. Just your opinion! I would like to see something in black and white!
I don’t think that withholding a lawful and moral debt for wrong doing are the same as sanctions. It’s more like terrorism by a conquering people that have made it their task to destroy every Indian so that they could have all their land.
Indians are not wards of the government. However the U.S. does have a trust responsibility to tribes but since they seldom keep treaties or their word I wouldn’t count on it.
You say “The Cherokee can’t have it both ways. If they insist that they are not wards of the United States, then they should be treated the same way we treat any nation whose behavior we feel is out of line.” Who we feel is out of line? I believe that this statement explains your view on tribal sovereignty and your view about NDN’s!!! God created this country and gave it to the Indian. I hope that one day the creator dispenses real justice on “we”! And I hope he shows no mercy! Almost every country on the face of the earth fears the U.S. because of its conquering policies. It’s no wonder we have terrorist attacking “we”.
You never did explain why the Cherokee should be expected to honor one treaty when the U.S. has hardly honored any.
Blackbird, I think has it about right. The Cherokee need to be able to identify who’s a member and who’s not. Just like any other tribe.
I don’t care who’s on the Dawes rolls, “may be” black, “perhaps” white or Indian using your terminology.
I’m certainly not trying to provoke anyone; I just think that we all need facts instead of opinions.

It’s late and, rather than try to respond while I’m falling asleep, I’ll try to get back to you tomorrow.

July 31, 2007 at 3:28 pm #29057It is late, and this appears to be getting #1 ugly, #2 beyond the scope of this forum. I’m going to close this thread, and decide later if it should also be offline.
