Hey Vance
the Indian land claim commission was started back in{I think } 1945,and it lasted until 1979,it was started by the federal goverment the lady that headed it all up was Dr. Eminie wheeler voegelin, she was a Professor of Anthroplogy and History at I U, some of you might know of her husband he was a very well known researcher, In Philadelphia PA , at the American Philosophical Society Library you can find whats known as the C.F.Voegelin papers they cover a lot of tribes and there languages, good stuff.
I have catalogs to several research places ,so I go through them find things that I think pertain to my ancesters, and i order it ,you can go to these two Library and do your own research.the last time I talked to anyone at the Newberry Library ,I was told that they were looking at having internet access to some of there collections,I haven`t checked back to see if they ever did?
I sent you several e-mails yesterday Vance and they came back to me ,In these document that I have they have the Cherokee as far north as the mouth of Detroit river, they list a population of 65 Cherokee, they also talk about them {cherokee} and some of there captives, they are documented there in ohio in 1790 -1795.
also in these documents is the message wayne sent.

December 21, 2003 at 2:19 pm #8581Hello all, you know sometimes these simularities really creep me out, differnt spellings for the same names and same places, it’s almost like passing thro the edge of An Alberta clipper, a mirage that transforms infront of you, just too wierd.
Ever see 3 suns in the sky, 3 suns on the horizon or sunset, that’s what I mean it’s called a “sun dog”, but something very unusual, I think that’s what Saponi Town is an eclipse in time immediate and in your face, it signals a time of great transformation.
Thanx once agian everyone, Tom

Lightening Fox — howdy.
All I know about my Hawkins begins with Joshua Hawkins, b. 1835, Alabama — no one anywhere on earth appears to have been their parents. Supposedly a relative had 3 brothers and a sister of Joshua’s written in a Bible. Thomas, William, and Mary are the anmes I recall — i don’t rememebr the name of the other brother but it is written down someplace . . .
I have never seen Hawk and Hawkins written as the same surname. I once knew some “Haaks” and was told their name was German/Dutch. And they were Lutherans, too — which confirmed the German part in my eyes. 🙂
I have seen the “Wren” surname associated with Hawkins too, I think it was, while trying to find my ancestors. That may have been in Virginia, too. I just can’t do much until I find Joshuas parents, as it is such a very common surname. Wish I could help. If I knew who Joshua’s parents were I could start trying to find out where they came from . . . I don’t know if they were ever in Virginia or not. They might have been White. I can go to any county in American and find some Hawkins folks. Thre are several families right here in my home town (pop –25-30,000) of Indian (3 or 4), Black (several), and White Hawkinses (several), but we have never found a connection between any of them and my family.
Joshua A. Hawkins (my Joshua’s middle name was Allen) got 40 or 80 acres around Tuscaloosa Alabama about 1855 and Joshua Hawkins was in 8th Confederate Arkansas Regiment and just after the war married Elizabeth Maryann Byrum (census records say she ws born in NC) and from then until his death in 1892 the lived in Texas — Roberson, Falls, Milam county areas (that’s close to Waco). For some reason their son, Noah Allen Hawkins (1874-1952), moved to the Chickasaw Nation where he married grandma — Loney Richey (1883-1963), who was raised there. But Noah was raised 50 miles from Waco, Tx. Dad said he met his grandma once (she died in 1926) and said she was a big redheaded woman. He said there was an old rifle around and he was told his grandpa used it in the civil war. But that’s all I know about my Hawkinses — wish I knew more — they are a hard nut to crack.
One of Noah’s brothers was named “Benjamin” so have wondered if there was a connection to Creek Indian agent Benjamin Hawkins. Both Noah and his father were given the middle name of “Allen” so I have wondered if maybe that was Noah’s mother’s maiden name. But really they are a mystery, unfortunately. Wish I could be more help.
