September 22-23 – 54th Annual Fall Festival and Pow Wow

We usually make this one, especially since it’s the same weekend as our anniversary and that’s the area where we honeymooned. Just not sure what day we will go up…Friday or Saturday.

Thanks…looking forward to dancing…and the getting away.
Hardly seems like it’s only been two years…seems much longer…LOL. We will stretch this anniversary out by having dinner at Occoneechee Steak House on Tuesday, since they aren’t open on Monday. Will have to share the info about Ken’s gift next week…..
Last year we shared our anniversary with our “family” by giving out mints and match books….at the pow wow. Hope everyone has a great weekend…whether you are pow wowing or not.

You fit so much into your life it does seem like a longer time span. Didn’t you meet because of this Forum? You could tell us the story again. Family loves to hear that kind of thing over & over again.
Roca, Linda said you were there. Wish we could have met you. We were under the white canopy near the east gate, what time we weren’t dancing. You can see Becky’s regalia in her new avatar. I was the toothless old goat in buckskin leggings, feedsack shirt and fox face and tail on my hat with feathers, ermine and mink tails hanging around my face.
WN…. Becky and I met and became friends about 20 years ago…. then we didn’t cross paths for 15 years even though we lived about 10 miles apart the whole time. Our paths crossed again about 5 years ago. The time was right and we have been together and deeply in love ever since. I proposed at the closing of the drum at a powwow 4 years ago and we were married in 1860s attire 2 years ago. It had nothing to do with Saponitown although we have both been supporters of Linda and this forum’s success since soon after we got back together.
Sorry I didn’t get to see you, Roca…may be next time. And SilentWind, hopefully we will get to meet at some point since you live in Virginia. We did get to see Linda, Rose, Felicia and her family…which was a pleasant surprise. It was a good day to see old friends and make new ones. And I did enjoy shopping around and getting a tee shirt from Mario…who’s always in rare form.
The pow wow was interesting….Saturday it was both hot and humid, which made dancing take a lot more effort. There were several intertribals with exhibition dances (men’s traditional, ladies’ traditional, ladies’ fancy, men’s fancy, grass dance, jingle dance, sneak up)…there were also several social dances for the public. And there was a large crowd there on Saturday….the food was great…BBQ, burgers, fish, and of course, Indian tacos.
Sunday there wasn’t but one intertribal and a few exhibitions. Most of the day was for giveaways and recognitions for contributions to various things and for various people. I would have one recommendation for next year, though, it would be nice to have the dancing first and then do the recognitions in the last hour.
And once again, it was hot. It is nice that the tribe uses golf carts to ferry folks to their vehicles…because it’s a long walk from the parking areas, especially if you have much to carry. It’s interesting the differences between pow wows and the way each is presented by the various tribes. And it is interesting how each emcee has his own way of doing things….we had not experienced that until this year. We have been at pow wows with 3 different emcees and all are unique. And it is very interesting when you begin to dance to see which ones will allow you to dance and which ones are more stricter on their guidelines.

Since Becky made the previous post, we realized that there have been at least 5 different MCs….. actually there were 7 counting powwows at NCSSM and UNC.
As Becky said, some are more or less strict on who dances. At Chickahominy you fill out a form that says in bold letters “Proof of tribal identity required” but they don’t ask to see your card. I’m sure they do sometimes use it to challenge someone’s right to dance. There are some powwows that are very strict about only dancing in full regalia while others invite all in on intertribals… regalia or not. There is a place for both ends of the spectrum and enough powwows to choose from for all to attend only those they prefer. One purpose of these “critiques” is to point out some of these differences.
