Mr Bill Childs;
Bill I appreciate the info so very much and I say thanks a million.
As you know I am Very new to this genealogy searching and really don’t know what or how do do it correctly, In my searching I have found info that does not make a lot of sence to me, I have seen John’s wife listed as a Higgins, Higginsbottom, McGee and a couple more last names , I think there must have been more than one John cole and some researchers did not know what they were doing either. My cousin had John Cole my grandfather Listed with a middle Initial of M. and as far as I can find out through family he had no middle initial and the John M. Cole she had listed was the son of John (Jack) Cole and Margaret Mallet My great g-mother Eliza Bowman Cole was born 1842 in Scott Co Va and died 08 May 1927 in Martins Fork Ky (Harlan Co Ky)
On the John Cole listed on Harlan Co Ky tax list in 1888 with 5 children ages 6 to 20 , I noticed he is not listed on the 1891 Tax list but Eliza Cole is listed with 5 children ages 6 to 20, is there any way I can get info on names of children .? Any info you might give me or advise me how to do some of these things would be appreciated, again I say thanks a million Mr. Bill

Thanks for this info. I’d read it last week but I must have been distracted. It’s now starting to “soak in”. I follow your reasoning on Hawk being married prior to Elizabeth Mason. I wonder what happened to her for Hawk to be married to her on 25 Dec. 1838 and to be married to Nancy Barbour before 1842 when Eliza is born. Russell Bowman gives a new piece to the puzzle. Does the Census give House # for Russell and Hawkins?
In the 1870 Census (Harlan Co. right?) Eliza is listed as head of household if I remember correctly, along with several children, Robert, Rebecca, Mary, Almeda, Jacob, etc. No John Cole.
In the 1860 Census, John Coal (Cole), age 61, (the age is right being born 1799) has an Eliza, age 18, living with him. This is our Eliza Bowman Cole (Hawk’s daughter), born 1842. And yes, Elizabeth, age 15, (note she only aged 7 years since the 1850 Census! Quite a trick!) must be from a former marriage, probably Margaret Peggy Mallet. I agree that the John Cole listed in the 1870 and 1880 census’ cannot be the same John Cole that married Eliza Bowman. He’s 45 y/o in 1870 and 50 y/o in 1880 (another one that only aged 5 years in a 10 year span. I’d love to discover that secret!) but obviously the same John Cole in both because of wife Martha and children.
These families are very confusing to say the least!

I assume that Nancy Hensley, your grandmother, is related to the Hensley Settlement bunch. The Hensleys must be connected to the Brittians also because there are a lot of Hensleys buried in Britton Cemetary where Hawk and James Brittian are the first and second ones burried.
What are the birth and death dates for your grandfather, John Cole? Dad was telling me the other day that when he was young, he and my grandmother would go to the farm in Crestwood that your grandfather managed and they’d spend the night with the family. Your dad was Carl, right? I don’t remember him but Dad does.

March 10, 2006 at 3:56 am #21390Hello Jim,
My Grandfather John Cole was born ca 10 aug 1882 and died 8 may 1946 on the farm, (Cerebral Hemorage) . My Grandmother Nancy Hensley Cole was born ca 18 feb 1885 and died 2 aug 1957 ( heart attack) My father is Carl Glenmore Cole Sr b 23 june 1921 died 23 jan 1990 in la Grange Ky. The farm your father visited is loacted noth of Crestwood Ky just outside a community called ballardsville Ky, The address was actually Smithville Ky, This is where I was Born, on the farm in the big brick house that had close to 30 rooms in it.
my birth date is 7 april 1940. My wife is Lila Darlene Farris Cole born 19 Sept 1946 in Tullahoma Tenn and that is where I met her in 1966 , I hired her as my sec., and latter married her.we have 4 children James David, Michael Aubrey, Jason Lee and Emma Michele Cole Dozier. I was married previously in 1958 in ky .
Just recieved some more info on the Cole family and a couple of photo’s this date I have been trying to get it in my head as what is what, But seems that we are related to Jesse James and Frank James and their cousins the Youngers. This would also pertain to you. I think.

I’ve roamed the Cumberland Mts of Lee Co. VA many times but never been to Hensley Settlement, although I’ve been close on several occasions. I understand that they were pretty much a self-sufficient community, at least until the mid 20th century when the younger generation started moving off the mountain looking for “the better life”.

March 10, 2006 at 3:56 am #21419Hello tarcarion;
I have never had the opportunity to go there myself, but several family members have. Today I ran across some info on the subject, it is as follows;
EARLY EVANGELIST SPOKE ALL OVER COUNTY by holly fee. Rev. George W Hensley was a Pentecostal preacher who prewached all over Harlan Co Ky as an evangelist. He was the son of Baylor and Ella Daniels Hensley. His wife Clara was the daughter of Steve and Luda Hensley and was a dealer in Blair home products. They lived first in Abe Cole’s old house on the top of Stone Mountain, they were the last to move off the top of the mountain leaving there about 1944.
I would like and am planning to visit there one day if health holds up and I plan on goning back to Harlan also.

The Eliza Cole on the 1888 Tax list you’re referring to, has to be the ‘other’ Cole’s and it appears from later records that these are not your COLEs as far as I can tell.
The 1880s & ’90s, are nearly impossible to research online and someone will have to do some ‘courthouse-diving’ to do this issue any justice.

I recieved info tis past sat that John (Jack) Cole was granted a 50 acre tract of land in Knox Co Ky in 1845 Registered and recorded in knox co in 1847 Book 20 page 146 no. 9728. However he lost the land because he was an Indian ,it was taken by some white people . this info is suppose to have come from a relative or someone that knew the family back several years ago.Also stated that he lived in Lee Co Va from about 1835 to 1843 in Knox co Ky 1843 to 1855 and was back in lee co va 1856 to 1862. Also mentioned that John killed one of his bro in law’s and went to missouri for a while. In talking with one of Hawk Bowman’s sons relatives they stated that one of Hawks sons went to Mo. also, didn’t remember date.

I’d love to know who of Hawk’s son’s relatives you’ve talked to. This is a major breakthrough as I see it. I’m looking forward to this info. As far as Hensley Settlement, let me know when you want to go and I’ll meet you there. And Harlan Co. too. The hike up the mountain is grueling, at least it is in January in 7″ of snow. But I think you can rent horses still. My cousin’s wife rode up there with a group some years back, said she got busted bathing naked in the stream by a ranger. As I recall the story, she wasn’t arrested.
Do you have the marriage date for John and Eliza? I know they’re together in 1860 in Lee Co. VA according to the Census that I have.

Thanks. This is great news. How did you find her? I know you’ve put out a lot of queries of various forums and message boards.

I found her on genealogy.com , she responded to a thread I had posted there.
Did you ever make contact with walkswithwolves on the posting she had here on saponitown? I looked at it and believe she may be talking about people in our line.
