Good morning Laurie, and all the others.
Thank you for your post. You mention Jack Goins; he is a personal friend of mine and I can say with out a doubt, his book is backed up with documentation. I think you are correct about the term “Cherokee”. We were called that on occasion but can’t find a connection to the Cherokees.
I have also heard the term “Black Dutch”.
As for Alfred, I think you will find in the Lee Co. Va marriage records, his parents listed as Charles and Avy Gibsons. The little girl listed in Hancock Co. Tn census is really named Megan. Megan married Enoch Collins and they lived in Lee Co. Va. Alfred and Enoch’s mother were with them in one of the census. (don’t remember which one.) Megan and Enoch moved to Sparks Kansas.
Charles was up in his 90’s when he submitted his pension application. The application also shows he was born in Louisa Co. Virginia.
If I was back home in Kentucky, I could give you more specific information.
You mentioned Ava/Avy or one of her siblings made application for Cherokee recognition. Could you tell me how to get copies of those documents.
Again, thank you for your information and assistance.

October 26, 2006 at 12:10 am #23543Hello again Cleland…been right busy the past few days but I did do soem more hunting here and there and have personally come to the conclusion that your Charles Gibson was not the son of “Old Thomas” Gibson…despite what Jack Goins or other have indicated…please allow me to explain my premise. The main “concern” for me was the time-line. Here is what I know and believe descending downward from Thomas: Thomas “Old Tom” Gibson was b: 1691 in St Martins Parish, Hanover Co, VA and his wife was Mary Frances nee Allen b: UNK in same location. They had that I can discern 5 CH. Thomas died on 7 Nov 1734 in Hanover Co, VA. His will was probated and can be sums up as stating: ” Thomas1 Gibson, born say 1692, left a 29 October 1734 Hanover County will, proved that year on 7 November, by which he gave his sons Thomas and John Gibson 50 acres each, gave daughter Vine Nicks, wife of Edward Nicks, Frances Humphrey, and Mary Brock a shilling each. He gave his house and cattle to his son-in-law Edward Nicks who he named as executor and directed that Edward should bring up his children John and Valentine Gibson and also William Roberson [Court Records 1733-5, 151]. He was the father of:
Thomas
John
Valentine.” (Source: located Mar 2006; URL: http://www.freeafricanamericans.com
If this was the “Old Thomas” Gibson that you are referrign to, then Charles, who is shown as born in 1747 simply cannot be his son….dates don’t jive….coupled with the reported fact that Thomas’ wife Mary also died in that same year. *Note: I vaguely remember some time back reading that both he and his wife were burnt to death? Cannot find record of such now….will post if I locate it.*
However….on the bright side of things…..Thomas Sr. “Old Tom” Gibson DID have a son named Thomas…who was born say 1718…and IF that Thomas’s father Thomas Sr. died in said year of 1734…then HE would have subsequently become the “new” Thomas Sr. Gibson right?…and he certainly by dates could well have had a son Charles born in abt 1747. The only child I have thus far “attched” to Thomas (son of Thomas “Old Tom” Gibson) is Archibald b: 1750 who md: Basheeba Cole. I do not have a wife indicated for this Thomas, son of Thomas however I did locate a record for a possible MG:
“GIBSON, THOMAS large planter in VA, owned land in Culpeper and’Prince Edward Counties. Married MARTHA RIDDLE 1774 in Goochland Co.VA. ” (Source: Rootsweb PAF, located July 2006). This coudl well have been a 2nd or even “delayed” marriage for the younger Thomas and it sounds reasonable to me given that Thomas ‘ sister Mary Gibson MD Moses Riddle in abt 1739 in Louisa Co, VA. So given the date of birth of thsi Thomas’ son Archibald…it is surely reasobale to think that he could well have had a son (Charles) in 1747.
I did locate a user tree at Ancestry.com for Charles, it reads as follows:
Charles Gibson
Born: 1747
[city], Louisa, Virginia, USA
Died: 1839
[city], Hawkins, Tennessee, USA
Alternates Avy
Alferd Gibson (B: )
Spouse
Avy
Born: 1805 in [city], Hawkins, Tennessee, USA
Died:
Marriage:
Children Sex Birth
Alferd Gibson M *Note: born abt 1833 according to 4 census records in facts section*
*Additional notes/comments per self: this just does not seem feasible for Charles to have born in 1747 and marrying a woman born in 1805 and having a son, Alfred in 1833!? Charles would have been 86 years old!….Jack Goins at his site also mentions that Charles’ father was “Old” Thomas Gibson & his wife Mary Frances Allen…to me it seems far less likely that this is the same man, given the vast age differences between Thomas and his children’s dates of birth…Thomas’ CH were born in the 1714-1723 time frame…and this Charles was born in 1747….way some 20-30 years later than his sibs?…coupled with Charles dramatically elevated age at the birth of Alfred…it seems less and less feasible.*
So anyhow….I just don’t honestly know….I wanted to just post an alternative scenario for examination…that being that Thomas Sr. “Old Tom” Gibson may well have in fact died in 1734 and hsi son Thomas (prior to death Jr.) later the new Sr. could have been the father of Charles Gibson born in 1747 who filed a pension. I still have a very tough time swallowing that that exact Charles (b: 1747) had a child Alfred Palmer Gibson in say 1833 at the age of 86ish….perhaps there was a Charles Jr. born unto him that father Alfred and was as such the wife of Avy LNU? I was only able to locate Alfred on 3 censuses thus far: 1. 1860: Hancock Co, TN w/ wife Icy and 2 daus in HH. 2. 1870 Jonesville, Lee Co, VA no wife in HH but with 3 daus and his mother Avy with him. 3. 1880 Jonesville, Lee Co, VA with his new wife Nancy and 2 of his daus from his previous MG in the HH.
I looked for a marriage record for Alfred and Icy and was perfectly unable to locate one anywhere in Lee Co, VA…I also noticed that from a 2005 posting at a Rootsweb that when quearied a researcher searching on yoru behalf was unable to locate one either….did you ever locate the record yourself? I’d be most appreciative if you shared it with us…so thank you kindly in advance. I was however, able to easilly locate Alfred’s MG record for his 2nd (?) wife Nancy: Virginia Marriages, 1851-1929
about NANCY J. BURKE
Name: ALFRED GIBSON
Spouse: NANCY J. BURKE
Marriage Date: 7 Jul 1870
County: Lee
State: Virginia
I also wanted to mention that I have completely ruled out the possiblility of AVY, wife of Charles…as being the AVA nee Gibson, who was the d/o Bryson Gibson & Frances “Fannie” nee Green…reason being, her dates are far to “off” to lend merit. Avy, mother of Alfred shows as being born at about 1805….Ava nee Gibson was born in say 1820. Interestingly enough…I have another AVA that may be worth looking into as a possible spouse….thsi gal was Ava Mullins…and the reason she is in my tree is that she was listed as the mother of Clarissa “Clercy/Clara” Nichols who MD my G G granduncle: Esquire “Squire” Nichols. Their MG record in 1866 Magoffin Co, KY listed her mother just as just that: Ava Mullins…her father as Bill Nichols….who I believe to be William Nichols who also MD and had CH with Jemima “Mima” nee Cole. Clarissa was born in abt 1850…so perhaps her mother Ava Mullins Nichols had a previous marriage? Sorry to be so dern confusing but it’s difficult not to be given the rampant confusion fo even TRYING to sort through all of the ppl in our trees! It is just frustrating but…ultimately wonderfully so. Mulll all of this over…and let me know what you think please…Lord knows I could use something definative and clarified. You take great care….blessings from here to there~~~~Laurie
October 26, 2006 at 12:10 am #23552The Gibsons and Nichols that you are talking about are in my line of relatives. Bryson and Squire they are my cousins also. I am not good at this. But I have family writings and such. I have it on the computer and can’t get it off to save it. any way. I have some censes that list the Gibsons as Mo indians or M on some also. It is all comfusing to me. I have written on this board a couple of times before, but a long while ago. I would say that you and I are related.

Laura,
I can not verify any thing about Charles and Alfred because all my records are in Kentucky and I’m in Texas. I’m pretty sure Charles had a son named Charles but I have not been able to get a clear connection between Avy and one of the Charles’.
I do know that Alfred who was married to Icy was my G-grandfather.
I’m a little late responding to some of these posts because I broke my laptop and have to send it back to Compaq for repair. I use this one in the recreation center which will do until I get my back. Anyway, stay in touch because I am really interested in this line.

Hello Caroline…I’m sorry but I did not recieve any email message from you…did you send to my main email at: laurietaber@hotmail.com ??? At any rate, thank you for trying , I appreciate it. Would you please post your main descendancy here for all of us to see as well?…it just might “click” with some of the other researchers at this fabulous forum. If I understand yoy correctly in so saying , then Bryson Gibson/Gipson was a distant maternal grandfather of yours as well?….if that is the case, then yes, you and I are cousins also…being as he was my 4th G grandfather maternally. Take great care…look forward to hearing more from and about you soon. Blessings~~~Laurie
October 26, 2006 at 12:10 am #23706I don’t know if this is helpful or not….
On the 1830 Hawkins Co., Tn Census, p.77, Eastern District, there are two Charles Gibsons.
1) Mulatto age 36 to 55, with oldest female in the same age range.
2) Mulatto age 55 to 100, with oldest female in the household age 36 to 55.
The 1840 Hawkins Co., Tn Census, p.42, Eastern District, lists all of these same people as White.
Charles Sr, age 70 to 79, with
3 males 5 to 9 yrs old.
1 male 60 to 70 y/o.
1 female under 5.
1 female 10 to 14.
1 female 20 to 29.
1 female 30 to 39.
Charles Jr,, age 30 to 39 (b.abt. 1809 Tenn per 1850 census) with
1 male under 5.
1 male 5 to 9.
1 female 5 to 9.
1 female 20 to 29.
Purely speculative on my part but if the age of this Charles “Sr” is anywhere near correct, we may be missing a generation, i.e., This Charles “Sr” is a “Jr” himself?
October 26, 2006 at 12:10 am #23709Howdy Bill *waves* …thanks bunches Sir for posting and too, for your own speculation…now I know I am not losing my mind!!!?!!! Based on ages etc…it has been my feeling that there were a few generations “jumps” in that line and as such I summise it follows that Thomas Sr. begat Thomas Jr…who later became the “senior”…who begat Charles Sr….who has a Charles Jr. and so on…that said….how do ya prove it without yanking most of your hair out? LOL Without wills or land grants …tracing some of our lines is just crazy. Anywho….thanks for reitterating what seems to me to be the reasonable assumption…for now anyhow. Take great care~~~~Laurie

October 26, 2006 at 12:10 am #23798Hey Bill and everybody,
Just got my computer back from Compaq:) . I guess I should try and catch up before I say too much about Thomases and Charles’ Gibsons. I do think that Alfred was the son of young Charles but can’t prove it. Old Charles was in his90’s when he filed his Rev. War Pension application. One way or the other, ole Charles was one of my Great?Grandfathers.

October 26, 2006 at 12:10 am #25369Responding to post #17 above. But this posting from records in Hanover Co. VA responds in the first place to a personal message from Bill Childs, of which I’ll paste in a small part, below. The family in question is also discussed pretty extensively in these posts by BlondeyeLaurie:

http://www.saponitown.com/forum/show…8&postcount=17
So I’m posting it on that (second) thread.
I don’t know if what I see in the original will of Thomas Gibson, Sr. is already found elsewhere on the forum — if it is, I’m sure someone will tell me so — after I post it.
Here’s what I got from Bill:
Quote:
Nicholas’s son:
Thomas Gibson Sr., b.bet. 1675-1691 York or Hanover Co., Va; d. 7 Nov 1734 St. Martins Par., Hanover Co., Va., m’d Frances or Mary _?_, before 1712.
Children of Thomas Sr and Frances/Mary Gibson:
Eunice (‘Nice’), b.abt. 1712 Hanover Co., Va
Frances, b.abt. 1714 Hanover Co., Va.
Mary, b.abt. 1716 Hanover Co., Va m’d Richard Brooks.
Thomas Jr., b.abt. 1718 Hanover Co., Va.
John, b.abt. 1721 Hanover Co., Va.
Valentine, b.abt. 1723 Hanover Co., Va; d. 1815 Stokes Co., NC.
Some of the ‘dates’ appear to me to be ‘push-pull’ estimates and may be incorrect.
Here’s what I saw yesterday in the original record book:
Will was written 29 Oct. 1734. Gibson was very sick and weak of body, but sound of mind and memory. First bequest was “To my loving son Thomas Gibson, 50 acres. Item to my well beloved son John Gibson, 50 acres. Item to my well beloved daughter(s) Nice Nicks wife of Edward Nicks, Frances Humphry and Mary Brook, one shilling each. “Item I give devise and bequeath to my well beloved son Edward Nicks whom I do hereby constitute and ordain sole executor of this my last will and testament my house likewise my stock of hogs and cattle together with all my estate goods and chattels movable and immovable for to enable him to bring up my children John Gibson Valentine Gibson also William Robertson.” Revokes previous wills, &c. Thomas + Gibson his mark (seal). Witnesses Isaac Johnson (mark), Samuel Phillips (mark), G. Gillingham School M: [vertical squiggle after the capital M, probably abbreviation for Master].
Executor’s bond is signed by Edward Nix (seal) and Pomirey Anderson [who is called Anthony Pomirey, once, in the text of the bond — Pomirey Anderson another time, and signs that way].
Inventory appraisal signed by James Goodall, Peter King, and James Nuckolls, 7 Nov. 1734. (Will was also proved in court on 7 Nov.) This would be the first session of the court after the testator died, and it’s only nine days after he signed his will. We don’t know that he died on 7 Nov., seems very unlikely. The inventory runs to a couple of pages, and was not taken and recorded in one day — the estate was, I believe, about 30 miles NW of the courthouse.
I was not aware yesterday that the daughter Frances is supposed to have married Hundey (?); it looked like Humphry to me. But I note, for what it may be worth, a record I previously posted (from its abstract in W&MQ, 1912) shows Henry Chiles selling land to an Ambrose Hundley. I’ll expand on that in a separate note about Haralson and Chiles families.
I also note that the scribe for the will, presumably Gillingham, spelled the name of Nice Gibson’s husband “Nicks;” but he himself signed the executor’s bond “Nix.”
There was also a Brock family in Hanover Co.; I don’t know if that has any bearing on the Brook(s) to whom one Gibson daughter was married. Except for Edward Nicks/Nix, the will does not mention the husbands’ first names.
October 26, 2006 at 12:10 am #25381Thanks, Pappy.

Thanks Pappy, for the Gibson/Collins information:) . I would like to live closer to these resources. However, I am not so attuned to know just what to look for, as it seems you are. Thanks again.

October 26, 2006 at 12:10 am #25386I just got Pat Spurlock Elder’s book about Melungeons, today — and found that most of this Gibson will is in her book — p. 232, in the 2004 edition. A couple of little details I picked up aren’t there, and for what it’s worth, the name I read as “Pomirey” Anderson is “Pouncey” in her version. It’s one of those things I might have a different opinion about, if I went back and puzzled through the handwriting again. (Or, I might just think I’m right; it sometimes happens.) I notice that she has Frances married to a Humphrey (as I do), rather than a Hundley.
I’m tempted to get back into my old New Sweden files to look for the name of Pomirey Anderson, aka Anthony Pomirey. Might be some descendant of Mouns Andersson who was part Finnish and part Indian, and finds his old Finnish name “Antti” (cognate with Anders, as in Anders/son) changed to Anthony in the English-speaking environment.
That would make sense to about two people on this forum, and is perhaps far-fetched in the first place. I just mention it, because it did happen that way in the Delaware Valley (and maybe also in Cecil Co. MD), about a generation earlier. I have no suggestion at this time about the name Pouncey or Pomirey — as the case may be.
