If this is the correct county formation, then Hanover wasn’t formed yet when Old Thomas Gibson was born.
Hanover County was named for George I, who at the time of his ascent to the English throne was elector of Hanover in Germany. The county was formed from New Kent in 1720. Its area is 471 square miles, and the county seat is Hanover. Hanover is one of the Commonwealth’s Burned Records Counties. Most county court records were destroyed during the evacuation fire in Richmond on 3 April 1865. A few isolated record books that were not sent to Richmond and various scraps of loose papers survive.
St. Paul’s Parish was created in 1704 from the western part of St. Peter’s Parish, New Kent. The bounds of Hanover County were conformed to that of St. Paul’s Parish when it was created. The western part of St. Paul’s Parish became St. Martin’s Parish in 1726.
October 26, 2006 at 12:10 am #25399Funny you should mention that, I had just been reading a few minutes ago that one of your ancestors (Robert Allen) was born in Hanover Co. in 1675.

But as we all know, somebody can be born in a place before it gets called what people later will call it. I have no personal knowledge of where or when Old Thomas Gibson was born.
October 26, 2006 at 12:10 am #25400Hello Pappy…all….having been otherwise busy these past few weeks I just this morning started examining this line of Collins and Gibsons from Louisa Co, VA yet again and the name Pouncey caught my eye/ear…so looking in my notes I came across quite a lil cache of information on a certain Pouncey Anderson who Pappy mentioned as being an assignee in old Thomas’ will…by dates, name and location he appears to be the following:
“Children of Richard Anderson and Charity Pouncey are:
+ 2 i. Richard7 Anderson, born Abt. 1700 in New Kent County, Virginia; died Aft. 1766 in Hanover County, Virginia.
+ 3 ii. Pouncey Anderson, born Bef. 1704 in New Kent County, Virginia; died August 1781 in Louisa County, Virginia.
+ 4 iii. Robert Anderson, born Abt. 1706 in New Kent County, Virginia; died Bef. 1769 in Louisa County, Virginia.
———————————————————————-
*Note: some researchers think/feel that Richard Anderson’s wife was alternately named Mary nee Pouncey…irreguardless, Richard and this Pouncey woman did have a son named Pouncey, listed as CH #2 above. The notes for Richard are rather extensive and include the following:
” 1. Richard6 Anderson (Robert5, Robert4, Richard3, “York Watershed”2, “Colonial Virginia”1) (Source: (1) William Pope Anderson, Anderson Family Records, (W. F. Schaeffer & Co., Cincinnati, Ohio; 1936)., (2) William Pope Anderson, Anderson – Overton, A Continuation of Anderson Family Records (1936) & Early Descendants of William Overton & Elizabeth Waters of Virginia & Allied Fa, (Cincinnati, Ohio; 1945.)., (3) C. G. Chamberlayne, The Vestry Book of St. Paul’s Parish, Hanover County, Virginia 1706-1786, (Clearfield Company, Inc.; Genealogical Publishing Co., Inc., Baltimore, Maryland 1999).) was born Abt. 1673 in New Kent County, Virginia, and died Aft. 1723 in Hanover County, Virginia. He married Charity Pouncey (Source: C. G. Chamberlayne, The Vestry Book of St. Paul’s Parish, Hanover County, Virginia 1706-1786, (Clearfield Company, Inc.; Genealogical Publishing Co., Inc., Baltimore, Maryland 1999).), daughter of Anthony Pouncey. She was born Abt. 1680 in New Kent County, Virginia, and died Aft. 1756 in Hanover County, Virginia.
Notes for Richard Anderson:
Richard’s existence is derived from St. Paul parish precessioning records and the 1704 rent roll. He is identified in the St, Paul’s parish vestry book as responsible for the cures of two different individuals so I am assuming he was considered a doctor.
Curiously I have found no patents or deeds for him but he is listed as a land holder in the precessioning records.. He survived for a significant period in the St. Paul Parish precessioning records and it is possible that he had purchased a plantation and never moved from it. He is superceded in those records by his widow Charity Anderson. It is possible that his widow is the Charity Anderson listed as a daughter of Robert Anderson by Edward L. Anderson and others. He lived in a precinct defined separate from his bothers but within one plantation of his brother Matthew.

Notes for Charity Pouncey:
Charity supercedes Richard in the St. Paul’s parish precessioning rolls. It is possible and now I think likely that she was Charity Pouncey. In the 1731 precessioning roll she is co-resident in the precinct with Anthony Pouncey.

This record identifying her as Mrs. clearly indicates she was a widow as she is listed in the precessioning rolls and if she was single she would be a Miss.

Additional notes on Pouncey Anderson from my previous “diggings” show the following:
” 3. Pouncey7 Anderson (Richard6, Robert5, Robert4, Richard3, “York Watershed”2, “Colonial Virginia”1) (Source: William Pope Anderson, Anderson Family Records, (W. F. Schaeffer & Co., Cincinnati, Ohio; 1936).) was born Bef. 1704 in New Kent County, Virginia, and died August 1781 in Louisa County, Virginia. He married Elizabeth Holland. She was born Abt. 1705, and died Bef. 1796 in Louisa County, Virginia.
Notes for Pouncey Anderson:
Pouncey Anderson was believed by William Pope Anderson to be a grandson of Robert Anderson I, but no researcher to date has been able to prove from which son. Of the six candidate fathers of the second generation, Robert, John, Matthew, Thomas, Richard and David we actually only know the children of Thomas from his 1757 will in Albemarle. Other evidence suggests the children of Robert, John, Matthew and David and therefore I have assigned Pouncey to Richard because Pouncey named a son Richard. In addition the Holland family and Pouncey family precessioned land in 1731 and 1739 in St. Paul’s parish adjacent Richard Anderson, whom I believe to be the son of Richard Anderson senior. An examination of the widow of Richard Anderson, Charity Anderson, should be made to see if she was a Pouncey, in 1731 St. Paul’s parish vestry book precessioning records she is listed in a small precinct wtih Anthony Pouncey. Charity was a common Christian family name for the Pounceys.

*Note: this initially caught my eye because as mentioned above, this Pouncey Anderson had recieved land from a John Nickols which was witnessed by an Anthony Nickols…and well, Nichols is my primary maternal surname. Additionally, the surname Anderson, as it relates perhaps to Cuzzie nee Anderson who MD John Jack Cole was another lil inkling that led me down this path to Pouncey…I still have no concise idea of how all of these “players” fit but there just seems to be a ruminating connection between many of these folks….the Anderson’s, Nichols(sp), Collins & Gibsons. What ultimately led me to this Anderson surname info was a search I did for surname Nichols spelled as NUCKOLLS…a spelling variation that some feel strongly was the origin of my VA descended Nichols line…I happened upon a Nuckolls Rootsweb archive and just started scouring thru them all and bumped into info about Pouncey and the other Andersons. The Nuckolls archive post link can be located at URL:
http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/index/NUCKOLLS/2003-02
To read the Anderson family information in it’s entirety go to URL:

Hope this info helps to some measure…maybe eventually we’ll be able to string all of these surname families together eh? Happy hunting~~~Laurie
October 26, 2006 at 12:10 am #25404Cleland,
Hello cousin! I also am from the Collins/Gibson line in Hancock, Hawkins Co. Tenn. Louisa Co, and suspected Orange Co NC. I do not have my geneology with me right now. My daughter has it. But I will tell you what I do know off the top of my head. My Gibson Collins line. My grandfather is Russell Gibson, son of Hallie and Leonard Gibson, Son of Elizabeth Gibson and ? (Could be a Mcnally, Golden, or Roberts/Roberds) Daughter of Shepard (Old Buck) Gibson and Margaret (Spanish Peggy) Collins-Gibson. Now from there, with out my paperwork I am trying to remember. I think it goes Thomas Gibson jr was Sheps dad, then of Course Thomas Sr, who was the son of a Charles (?) All the B and D deaths and Counties are at my daughters right now tho. My Gibsons also migrated notrth into KY, settling into Berea and Richmond. My grandfather moved his family up here to Cincinnati when my father was a young teen. He is 71 now. Anything click with you here?
October 26, 2006 at 12:10 am #25472hello
I am too researching my family’s history and my great grand mother’s name was Minnie Gibson .
She was from South Carolina and I was told by a geneologists that the Gibson’s were free blacks that intermarried with mostly Cherokee peoples .
I have a pitcure of her and you can see that she looks at lease half indian if not whole. Hopes this helps

October 26, 2006 at 12:10 am #25473There were also Saponi families by the name of Gibson. The Saponi are documented as moving in with the SC Catawba at one point. Some theorize that later, after the tribe had disbanded according to the government, that some survivors merged with the Catawba. There is one family that migrated out to Ohio who originated from Hillsborough, NC, I believe it was, who nonetheless called themselves Catawba. There have been other instances of this, making me think that a merger of sorts took place, with Saponi descendants identifying themselves as Catawba.
October 26, 2006 at 12:10 am #33527If you google jfgibson, you will find the Jsoeph Fisher Gibson Family. It shows the lineage from Joseph Fisher Gibson to several generations. My Aunt, Thelma Banks, was married to Elmo Gibson who is a direct descendant of Joseph Fisher Gibson of Sneedville, Tennessee. They lived on Newman’s Ridge.
Hamilton Gibson came to Knott County, Ky. from Newman’s Ridge. He was known as Ham. One of Ham’s sons was James Gibson. One of James’ sons was Theodore Roosevelt Gibson. Roosevelt had a son named Elmo.
Sincerely, Ben Banks.
October 26, 2006 at 12:10 am #33535Hello Ben,
I noticed your post mentioning Joseph Fisher Gibson. I had sent a link to your post to a Gibson/Collins researcher who is a descendent of Joseph Fisher Gibson. She is not a member of the forum, but asked me to post this:
“Hamilton Gibson was born in VA on December 28, 1931 and died on January 10, 1919 in Knott co., KY. Death Certificate F6983. His mother was Marinda Gibson and his father was James Gibson. James Gibson was the son of Joseph Fisher Gibson. I was the person who provided the Joseph Fisher information for the website Joseph Fisher is my gr gr grandfather.
I am constantly in contact with the Hamilton Gibson family. I will be glad to provide you whatever help I can if you will send your descent. I am not a member of the Saponi board, however, my e-mail is “
