Very interesting. Say, do you see any connection between these Corns and our Corn line? The waters get pretty murky prior to John Adam Corn – who, I believe, is probably the father of George, Jesse, John Peter & Samuel, based on the following, since it names Molley (John Adam’s wife) as their mother:
White, Virgil D., Genealogical Abstracts to Revolutionary War Pension Files, (1st edition, Waynesboro TN, National Publishing Company, 1990-1992, 4 vols), page 768, ..”mother of the sol Samuel (s/b Jesse) Corn & his 3 bros George, Peter & Samuel one time lived in Henry Co VA. … & was a son of Molley Corn …”
On a related note, have you ever come across any Revolutionary War documents for George Corn? I’ve seen them for Jesse and John Peter, both of whom were at Valley Forge, but not George or Samuel – except in the snippet quoted above.
And thanks for the dates, Bill.

Does anyone know who this Hugh CORN’s parents were?
Hi jmcorn,
According to the cemetery book, Hugh Corn was born in 1838 and died 1898. He is buried in Massies Creek Cemetery, Section B, Lot 69; Cedarville Twp., Greene County, Ohio. Since he died in 1898, Ohio only had death records and not certificates at that time, so his parents wouldn’t be listed.

This family is of interest to me because my Jones family was in Greene County. A Sturdivant/Studevant proved their ages when they were married there in 1841. A couple of their children married descendants of Jeffries and one of their children married a Guy.

Hi Art,
I have access to Revolutionary War files from HeritageQuest. The following Corns are listed:
George Corn (PA, VA)
Jesse (& Nancy) Corn (VA)
John Peter (& Elizabeth) Corn (VA)
Timothy (& Elizabeth) Corn (VA)
William (& Elizabeth) Corn (PA; CONT) – named also spelled as Corn/Corun/Corrn/Kann
If you would like any of these, just let me know. I can download them and send them to you (some of the files are rather huge). They would be .pdf files. If you want them, just post your email address, or send it to me at stacey.23@insightbb.com.

October 27, 2005 at 3:41 pm #18302Hi All –
I am going to throw this out and see if anyone can help because our “family legend” is clearly INcorrect. The earliest CORN ancestor I can definitively identify is Silas Andrew CORN – b. 15 Dec 1824 in NC d. 29 May 1902 in Habersham Co, GA. He married Sarah BUTTS b. 10 Dec 1831 in SC – d. 16 Aug 1907 in Habersham Co, GA. Both are buried in the Fairfiled Baptist Church Cemetery some 5-6 miles due west of Clarkesville, GA and about 2 miles north of the traditional CORN homestead.
Silas and Sarah first appear on the 1850 census of Pickens Dist, SC with a 1 yr old child. They stayed in SC until 1871 when they moved to Habersham Co with another family (Thomas Jefferson LOGGINS). Apparently, Silas & Thomas (and others?) built the Fairfield Baptist Church. One of Silas’ children, John, married one of Thomas’ children, Martha Minerva LOGGINS.
For years, everyone has believed that Silas was the son of Adam CORN & Hannah Elizabeth PARR. “Elder Adam” was a Baptist preacher who ministered primarily to the Indians in western NC and north GA. Unfortunately, I ran across Adam CORN’s bible leaf showing most of his children and Silas is NOT listed…. not to mention the next child in line was born 3 mo and 30 days after Silas. Pretty tough trick even for a preacher’s wife.
So for now our “branch” seems to have temporarily fallen off the CORN family tree. I have a couple “brick walls”……
1) Where did Silas come from? Who were his real parents. One person proposed that Adam CORN supposedly adopted an Indian boy and that may have been Silas although there is no documentation showing any adoption (white, indian or “other”), much less that it was Silas.
2) I cannot identify where Sarah BUTTS came from either. There is an article on USGENWEB for SC regarding the “BUTTS Cemetery” which states that Sarah came from SC but the names and dates don’t really match.
I have not done any real research regarding Martha Minerva LOGGINS. But I have seen all 3 names (CORN, BUTTS, LOGGINS) listed on this site and I am hoping that this will ring a bell for someone.

Hi Stacey,
Thanks for sending the file on George Corn. As it turned out, however, this was the “other” George – who went to Pennsylvania and later to Kentucky, and not “my” George. But regardless, thanks for your efforts!
Say, would you have access to the file on Thomas Hollandsworth Sr.? This was Millie (d/o George) Corn’s father-in-law. He was in the Virginia militia, and saw action at Guilford’s Courthouse in 1781.

October 27, 2005 at 3:41 pm #18355JMCorn,
There is an earlier Silas Corn in this family group.
He first shows up in 1830 Buncombe Co., NC, age 20 to 29, living 2 houses away from John P. Corn, age 70 to 79.
also in 1830 Buncombe:
Samuel Corn, 40 to 49. (next door FPCs Gibson, Gin, Francis, Hall)
Noah Corn, 20 to 29.
Peter Corn, 30 to 39.
Jessee Corn, 30 to 39.
Arthur Corn, 30 to 39.
(John Cagle, 40 to 49, related line, lived 3 houses away)
At this time in 1830 Patrick Co., Va (from Henry)
Jesse Corn, 40 to 49.
John Corn, 40 to 49.
Richard Corn, 20 to 29.
Samuel Corn, 40 to 49.
Susanna Corn, 40 to 49.
In 1840 Henderson Co., NC, this older Silas Corn is 30 to 39, and living near Jessee Corn, 40 to 49.
also in 1840 Henderson, same group as the Buncombe group who were not there in 1840:
Samuel Corn, 50 to 59.
John Peter Corn, 90 to 99.
Arthur Corn, 40 to 49.(these 3 above, are door to door)
John D. Corn, 20 to 29.
Noah P. Corn, 30 to 39.
Peter Corn, 50 to 59.
At the same time, a Jesse Corn, 50 to 59, lived in Patrick Co., Va with 3 FPCs in his household, a female 24 to 36 with 1 male and 2 females under age 10. No slaves.
and a Samuel Corn, 30 to 39 lived in 1840 Stokes Co., NC.
Southern Henderson Co NC is about 15 miles from northern Pickens Co., SC.
There is another inference of relatedness.
In 1850 Henderson Co, Robert Corn, b.abt. 1825 NC, lived in the household of Peter Corn, b.abt. 1793 NC.
In 1870, Silas and Sarah Corn lived in Oconee Co., SC and so did the above Robert, who named one of his sons Silas E. Corn.
Bill
Oconee Co was created in 1868 from Pickens Co., so Silas & Sarah may have lived in that part of Pickens which became Oconee and wouldn’t necessarily have ‘moved’ to end up in Oconee.

Hi Art,
I checked for Hollandsworth and there were none listed. Under Hollingsworth, they had…
Elias Hollingsworth (SC)
Henry Hollingsworth (NC)
Jacob Hollingsworth (PA)
Stephen Hollingsworth (NC)
Zebedee (& Elizabeth & Zebulon) Hollingsworth (NC)
There were 55 Hollands listed including six Thomas’. They were from NY, DE, NC, VA, SC, NJ.

October 27, 2005 at 3:41 pm #18376Hi Bill –
Thanks for your efforts. I really do appreciate all your help. I can identify all the people you have listed and I am still missing Silas Andrew Corn b. 1824. All the people you listed in Buncombe/Henderson CO are descendants of John Peter CORN, brother of George, Jesse, and Samuel. John Peter’s 1st son, “Elder” Adam Corn was in Haywood (later Macon) Co in 1820 & 1830. He was one of the first “white men” to move to Union Co, GA right after it opened up for white settlers. That would have been 1839. He and another man named Humphrey Posey started (Primitive) Baptist Churches all over western NC/north GA from the early 1800’s until his death in 1871. Another son of John Peter that you listed in your census records is Noah Parr Corn (another Baptist preacher) who married Elizabeth Capps who was 1/2 Cherokee by blood. Her mother, Nancy Ann Cooksey, was full blood although I haven’t found documentation to prove this yet.
I was really shooting blind hoping someone would recognize either the Butts or Loggins names.
– John
October 27, 2005 at 3:41 pm #18382John,
The cemetery dates for Silas and Sarah being “off”, may have a corollary on the 1900 census, where they are listed as born 1816 and 1823, respectively.
Other than census records from 1850 onwards, I don’t have more detail on Silas A. Corn as he would have been too young on the 1840 census.
Sorry, I didn’t recognize what appeared to be a statement of fact about the BUTT & LOGGINS as a question in your previous post.
……………………………..
BUTT:
On the 1860 Pickens Dist SC census; Regiment 2; 11 July; P.O: Long Creek; p.133:
at 1004, 1004,
Silas CORN, 35, m, – , farmer, $600, $325, NC.
Sally, 28, f, – , SC (Sally is the nickname for Sarah)
Rachael, 11, f, – , SC
Jacob, 9, m, – , SC
Susan, 4, f, – , SC
Mary, 3 months, f, – , SC
at 1025, 1025:
Jacob BUTT, 75, m, – , farmer, $3000, $5050, SC
Jacob, 15, m, – , SC
Milly A. HUD (?), 40, f, – , SC
Catharine M. HUD (?), 7, f, – , SC
This Jacob BUTT’s brother John’s family claims Jacob’s daughter SARAH BUTT m’d Silas CORN in Pickens Dist SC (no dates), and the circumstancial evidence seems to bear out the likelyhood of this being true.
Sarah’s mother, per the BUTTs, is Elizabeth “Betty” Gassaway, b.1806 SC, whose parents were Henry Gassaway, b. abt. 1774, d. 1848(?) SC and Rachel _?_, b.1790 SC.
1850 Pickens District SC census; Western Division; 17 Aug; p.393B,
at 321, 331:
Rachel GASSAWAY, 60, f, – , farmer, $0, SC
Henry, 22, m, – , SC
Minerva, 18, f, – , SC
322, 332:
Jacob BUTT, 66, m, – , farmer, $1000, Ga. (maybe SC? )
Betty, 44, f, – , SC
Susan, 15, f, – , SC (m’d Jacob Rothwell)
Jacob, 5, m, – , Sc (m’d Mary Moore)
322, 333 (same household as Jacob Butt)
John DAVISON, 40, m, – , none, $0, SC
Cornelia, 20, f, – , SC
(Cornelia is probably another dau of Jacob and Betty)
same census; 21 Aug; p.397A:
at 371, 389:
Silas CORN, 23, m, – , farmer, $0, NC
Sarah, 16, f, – , SC
Rachel, 1, f, – , SC.
………………………………………..
John BUTT, b. 1780, and
Jacob BUTT, b. 1784, are claimed by John Butt’s descendants to be the children of:
John I. BUTT, b. 1750 Va; d. 1828 White Co., Ga; and
Susannah _?_ , (no dates).
They also think John Butt (jr) was born in Penn., which brings up the possibility they are related to techteach’s (on this forum) BUTTS/BUTT line but I really haven’t looked into that.
=========================
Please start a new thread on your LOGGINS and MEEKS (Thos J. Loggins & Mary E. Meeks were both b. Ga) as I have quite a bit of data and information on these lines.

October 27, 2005 at 3:41 pm #18384Just to confuse myself even more after reading all of this…
/va/patrick/vitals/marriages/allen01.txt
Notice the James Madison Allen…I think they mean Charles Madison Allen as in the marriage to Polly Corn aka Mary “polly” Corn. I see the name Cagle in there. And another marriage of Susan Allen to George Corn…too many names by now in my brain. Sue J
Just came back in here to edit this, because the link won’t work. It was on the Patrick co Va genweb site under Allen marriages but it won’t copy.

October 27, 2005 at 3:41 pm #18395Hi Sue –
Yes, it does start getting confusing. Especially when 1st cousins marry. That is the case here.
John Adam CORN & Elizabeth ADAMS lived in Patrick Co, VA. They had 9 children. Two of those children were –
Mary CORN b. 1811
John Abraham CORN II b. 1826
Mary CORN married Charles Madison ALLEN in 1844. They had 4 children including Susan Jane ALLEN b. 1850
John Abraham CORN II married Permelia Ann CUNNINGHAM in 1849. They had 8 children including George Washington CORN also b. 1850.
Then George Washington CORN married his 1st cousin Susan Jane ALLEN in 1872.
———
The CAGLE/CORN marriages were actually in another branch of the CORN tree.
October 27, 2005 at 3:41 pm #18404John,
Thanks for that clarification..I didn’t know quite who was who except for Charles Madison Allen and Mary. Now I can look a little further. Each new bit of info helps.
Thanks, Sue J
