I found alot on here, by way of Google, on the Cresap line being discussed. My ancestress, Martha Upshur, is said to have married Captain William Cresap after the death of her husband John French. John French is my ancestor, grandfather of my John French who married my Obedience Clay.
Also of interest is the Vinson and Parker marriage in N.C. I was just reading. My ancestors were Parkers, and my Hale ancestors were from Franklin Co. VA.
My 3rd great-grandfather was named Vinson Hale and where my mom is from in W.V. are a bunch of Hales (naturally) and Vinsons, which appear to have moved around alot with each other, and makes me wonder whether or not my ancestor got his name from this family and the connection. Most of my ancestors, or ancestral surnames are also found in Chowan N.C. And I am on “Heavy Leanings” that my Parker ancestors had some connection to the Powhatan, as did my Adkins. They either were part of full NA (Adkins and/or Parker), but still all I have are clues and findings yet to be proven.
The Adkins buried on the Chickahominy land have the same first and last names as a few of my ancestors, but these Chickahominy came way after my ancestors did. But my Adkins lived along the James River, then into Henrico County. They were here in the 1700’s and most likely before that a bit in Jamestown. So although I was surprised to find these names disccussed here, I wasn’t shocked because I have found that my maternal line carries alot of well known individuals. I also descend from Garrett Van Swearingen which I have found discussed here as well.

May 30, 2007 at 1:44 am #26676The E. Parker you speak of either is or isn’t from my line of Parkers. The reason I say this is because it depends on which camp of genealogy you fall into, what books you believe, etc. Now the reason I say this is because there are books written on this family that state that the Richard Parker in Nansemond and the Richard Parker in James City were two different people, and that Elizabeth Bailey was never married to a Richard Parker, but another Parker all together.
The James City Parker line is what I am supposidly descended from according to the book. But I wonder, and this comes from the authors own postings online, that since the suthor says there was courthouse fires and things, if the authormay have records mixed on two different Richard Parkers herself…or since the area one Parker lived from the other, if they were not one in the same.
Here is why…
There is a connection in what I believe is the Indian Parker side to a Hunter line, and I find that in my Adkins line that came later, one descendant of my ancestor’s kid’s children married into the Hunter line almost exclusively. But according to the author, this Hunter connection is just a fluke basically…that is one Hunter in one line she says is not my line, and Hunters coming in later in my Adkins line that she states the “James City” Parkers fit into.
You’d have to really dig around in here to find it, but a long time ago I put something up about my Adkins possibly having connections to the Chickahominy and the Powhatan. That is still my “Strong Leaning”. Since that time I posted that here, I have found more evidence that my Adkins are said to be “Indigenous Race”. So I still am working on determining if this was because of the Parker line or not.
In a simple answer, after that long narrative which was needed to make the simple answer clear…
If your Elizabeth came from the Nansemond area, then she is more than likely native, and from what I found is connected with the Powhatan Indians in some way, and Chowan N.C. If your line connects with the James City Parkers…then it is really up in the air, and still debated heavily. However an author states there is no connection. But like I said above, I am pulling up things slowly that question her findings in her book.
Either way Janette, which ever camp you choose to believe…you come from the same line of Parkers as I do. It is just figuring out which Richard is which…and again…they could even be the same for all we really know at this time.
As far as the Clays go…
My line has folks in Mecklenburg VA, but I am not certain if they connect to Featherstones and the “native” line of Clays or not. My line goes back to Mitchell Clay and Phoebe Belcher, who’s story about being attacked by a band of Shawnee can be found online just by typing in either one of their names.
This Clay line is where I find myself related to…well…myself. I am a direct descendant on my maternal side, and a cousin to this line on my paternal side. The first one I have found so far where that is the case.
May 30, 2007 at 1:44 am #26677Hi Steve,
I am thrilled you took the time to cover all this. Just one more step to make the connections. Seems you are much further along than me however i am determined to learn. I believe that John SR. Hamblen/Hamlin set a trend of the men in the family choosing NDN or women of color as their mates. It seems to be the women are the connection and so hard to unravel. thanks for the help and lets keep at it. Pleased to know another is working in the same directions. I will keep up with your posts. I have a current listing of some info that probably do not relate to your family however you never know so take a look on genealogy.
thanks,
Janette

You are connected with me also, through the Van Swearingen line. I also have French, although not direct like Van Swearingen. The French family moved with my group from OH to IA. The Van Swearingens are direct ancestors through my grandfather’s line, while the French is connected through my grandmother’s line. My grandfather’s line has no stories of NA that I am aware of, although there may have been. My grandmother’s line is mixed.

May 30, 2007 at 1:44 am #26692I’ll call Felicia over here, her dad’s a Clary, which was changed from Clay a few generations back for some reason. Hey Felicia, get your butt on over her. She can hear that, ya know. The woman has amazingly sharp senses. I don’t have to send an email link like everybody else. hehe.
May 30, 2007 at 1:44 am #26695Steve-O:
Do your WV Vinsons have any known connections with SE Virginia/NE NC Vinsons? I have Vinsons who originated in Tidewater VA, then to Northampton Co NC, and then to Franklin Co NC (and then to Tennessee). My Vinsons intermarried in two or three places with the Bass family who had Nansemond roots and lived very close to where the Haliwa/Saponi are located, among whom Bass is also a frequent name.(My own line is not, to my present knowledge, native, but has a lot of intermarriages.)

May 30, 2007 at 1:44 am #26696Again, I am still uncertain that these Vinsons and my Hales have any connection at all. Just seeing the name of the family almost everywhere my Hale line migrated. So to say “my Vinsons” is still something yet to be determined. Just so there are no misunderstandings.
The furthest I can go back on the WV Vinsons is to a Lazarus Vinson, who married a Jane according to my marriage book. Researchers online have her listed as “Unknown Jared”, so her name could have been Jane Jared, but that is if they have the surname correct, which I cannot, nor will I swear this is the case at this moment.
Lazarus and “Jane” (which is all I can state is fact based on records)…well Lazarus, b. circa 1765, is said to have come from NC, Jane comes from wherever… I have no idea. But their children appear to be the oldest family of descendants in WV between 1850 and 1900.
The Vinsons I find here and there where my Hales were…some descendants are found in the Chowan NC area. Doesn’t prove anything, but puts up flashing lights for me to note just in case.
Somewhere on this forum I ran across somone’s post who had my Delilah Hale and husband Henry Fleming Meadows in their post listing folks who were believed to be of native descent, or had native in them. My Hales still have that said today about them from various members of my family. I have photos of a few of them and they looked it, and obviously this was passed onto Meadows researchers families (what was posted on my ancestor’s daughter Delilah Hale Meadows on this forum from somewhere else online) as well, as the posting I read on this forum said something to the effect that they were told the Hales had Indian in them.
But were the Vinsons of native descent? I cannot say they were or were not. Again, the surname just pops up almost everywhere my Hales show up. If there is a connection, the question is…Who was following who…and why?
I just note that, and that my ancestor had the first name of Vinson, and think maybe there was a connection because of it all. But to say they are part of my Hale line at this time would be pre-mature on my part.
May 30, 2007 at 1:44 am #26697I would also like to clear up that Martha Upshur may not have been an Upshur. That is still debated. It is just in most circles that is the surname placed on her.
May 30, 2007 at 1:44 am #26722Steve-O, can you give us some names, dates of your Clays in Mecklenburg?
May 30, 2007 at 1:44 am #26725Only one I have at the moment, that I can find in my notes, who had alot of kids in Mecklenburg supposidly, not in my direct line so I have yet to verify, is Temperance Clay, born circa 1776-77, d/o Charles Clay and Phoebe Cheatham, married Stephen Black circa 1793, and said to be the granddaughter of my Henry Clay and Mary Mitchell.
They had alot of kids born in Mecklenburg. But again they are not of my direct line so I haven’t got around to verification yet. As my Clays are a huge family, it takes a long while to verify all the children. My John French and Obedience Clay had 15 kids, and it appears this was almost commonplace for the whole family way back when….so it takes awhile.
