Some of you know the reason Becky and I haven’t been on much is because we are actively finding and recording lost cemeteries now. We are helping get all cemeteries in Person co, NC surveyed and on-line. We have digital camera and GPS unit and the guidance of the ancesters.
Today we discovered another “special” one. Deep in the woods overlooking the South Fork of Flat River downstream of Lick Creek……. between 100 and 200 fieldstones and depressions, euro style single graves but appearing to date back to 1700s…… very strong spirit in that place. This is land that would have been Collins, Gipson, Bolling, et al. Still overwhelmed by the place but wanted to post this…… if I say any more we will need to shift it to X-Files 😉

August 2, 2004 at 4:08 am #10408Keep up the good work. And, of course, let us know about those X Files.
August 2, 2004 at 4:08 am #10413That is most excellent! I think it is a wonderful thing you are doing. It is very important to locate these cemetarys. Maybe somehow, so they can be protected or atleast respected. Some people (Like my sis. Nelda) don’t realize the importance or sacred meaning to these places. If anyone has any idea how to get me to stop getting angry at such folks and not invision myself smacking them upside the head, please let me know. I’m serious! I think I’ll go out, hike around and hang by the Wheel a while. I suppose I’m about 10 smudges behind too! And there is no excuse for it…..Stay Focussed! Love & Light, Lynella.
August 2, 2004 at 4:08 am #10418Becky & Ken,
Thank you for your effors.
I know it would be even more difficult if you didn’t have The-Spirit-Which-Calls-You, but your efforts should not, nevertheless, go unnoticed. For my part, Thank you.
Bill
P.S…. Wish we COULD sit down and talk the night and weeks away. Maybe next Homecoming.
August 2, 2004 at 4:08 am #10421Thanks Bill for all you do to get the truth out. Your selfless work on the genealogy was part of the inspiration to spur us into what we are doing. The ancesters are pleading to be remembered…. the children want the answers……. how could we not do what we all do?
btw……. the skeeterhawks are now our constant companions when we are out. The forest spirits 😉
August 2, 2004 at 4:08 am #10435Reguarding the Blackfoot Cemetary in Pike County, Spurgeon Indiana, I talked to my brother Kerry, in PA. He said he tried to do rubbings there, but the old stones were like a real crumbly cement. So, he said he dusted them with pencil lead so the letters would stick out more and took photo’s. He said it will be a couple of weeks before he has time to dig them out, but he said he’d send me copies. He’s gonna’ get me copies of a bunch of stuff I never got, so I’m anxious! Love & Light, Lynella.:)
August 2, 2004 at 4:08 am #10460That’s great Lynella. It will be very interesting to see those names. Any chance anybody can track down if there are any church records anywhere?
August 2, 2004 at 4:08 am #10473Yeah, Kerry said he’s got some of that too. It should all come in the same batch of stuff. My sister Donna never has mailed me her stuff yet. She’s been pretty busy though with my oldest sister being terminal and my sister Marsha still fighting with grief issues over the loss of her husband last year. All this has brought us a lot closer though. So, as I get stuff I will let you know. I have a little story to bring up, but I’m waiting for more info on the area around the Blackfoot Cemetary. Which reminds me, I still need to get maps! That will be my quest today! Love & Light, Lynella.
August 2, 2004 at 4:08 am #10482I went out to the cemetery where my ggggrandmother is buried today when I went back to Iowa to visit my 90 year-old grandmother. I walked it and collected surnames that I will post later when I get back home to WI. I did not have time to collect first names and dates though. This is the ggggrandmother who has the Blackfoot ID. Now I know too, that another person in that cemetery has the same story, thanks to Deb, so other names may be interesting. Brenda, there is a Standish.

August 2, 2004 at 4:08 am #10492Ooh-h-h, I want to hear all about it! Lynella.

This was quite a find…I have not spent much time searching cemeteries (only online), but I would have liked to have been there.
August 2, 2004 at 4:08 am #26101For the rest of the story, search threads on Osborne Jeffreys and Duncan Cameron as this was a cemetery used by both plantations for 250 years. Called a “slave cemetery”, but likely used by slaves AND free mixed bloods, the total count of burials is somewhere between 500 and 1000. ….. still one of the most powerful places that we have ever visited.

Thanks Dreaminghawk, I will check it out. I hope to someday be able to visit in person, I can imagine the experience is powerful. Thanks.

August 2, 2004 at 4:08 am #26104Ken and Becky, I trust all of our forum members realize how important the work you two are doing is to not only this forum but countless families and individuals. It is a work of extreme physical investment and emotional care and I encourage all our members to remember you all in our prayers for protection and guidance as well as good health. May I say thank you and hope others who are of physical health and ability would learn from you and take up the work all over our land. Some of us have on occassion had the privilege of walking through woods and fields and finding those tell-tale signs of periqinkle and feel forms of field stones underneath it’s leaves or the depressions in the earth. In a moment you are transported from the present to the past and realize you stand on holy ground and can only wonder the lives and stories beneath your feet. Somehow I begin to carefully move out and to what seems the perimeter of such a location and offer a prayer of remembrance and respect. Thank you again. Ed and Rachel
August 2, 2004 at 4:08 am #26109Ed, thank you for the kind words and prayers. So far, the ancestors have smiled on our efforts. We continue to be blessed with the health and time to do our small part to honor the ancestors by finding and recording their final resting places. More and more of our efforts are going toward protecting these sites lately. By all means, we encourage everyone in their own small corner of the world to consider the value of finding, recording, recovering, maintaining and protecting local cemeteries.
