Dreaminghawk:
Your Person County cemetery link yielded a couple of surnames that show up on my genealogy and the cemeteries where my people are found. They have not been mentioned to my knowledge on this forum yet: Street(s) and Edwards. There are Edwards and Streets buried in cemeteries in Jackson County, Iowa where my NDN ancestors are buried (and are names in my extended genealogy).

March 29, 2004 at 10:32 pm #9478Dreaminghawk,
I didn’t find any marriage info on any of these people so the records are probably in a church somewhere.
Lera was the wife of Allen Meadows. Woody/Woodie (actually Joseph W.) was their son.
Allen was the son of George Meadows (b.abt. 1832 NC), and Mary __?_ (b.abt. 1840 NC), not of his 2nd wife Mariah (b.abt. 1827) who had been married to a Carrington. (Native Lady, this forum, has Carrington’s in Halifax Co., Va., just over the border there.) Couldn’t find George Meadows before 1870.
I did not find Lera before she married Allen. Maybe she’s a WOOD/WOODS ? (just playing off of Woodie’s name of Joseph W. Meadows.) There was a Joseph Woods in earlier Holloway Twp but didn’t have a dau Lera or Laura.
(Did an open-ended search of 1880 Person County using only the first name LERA and born within 2 years of 1874 and only brought up 7 LAURAs and no Lera’s of any spelling variation I could think of. Surnames of the 7 Laura’s were:
Hamblin, Smith, Philpott, Stanfield, Clayton, Brigg, Henry.)
Ella Holman was the wife of Wesley Holman. There is an Ella Meadows, b.abt.1875 and W., dau of Groves Meadows. I don’t know is this is the same Ella or not.
Wesley Holman’s father was Augustus, b.abt. 1826, whose wife was not in the household in 1880. Couldn’t find Augustus before 1880 to get his wife’s name, but he wasn’t in NC.
Census info follows. All persons listed as born in NC, as were their parents. Race of children same as indicated for parents:

March 29, 2004 at 10:32 pm #9480Thanks, Bill. This doesn’t confirm nor deny my thoughts that Meadows could have gone either way depending on skin tone. It is interesting that the area that was the Meadows holdings is now called Moriah…… it was Five Points in mid 1800s

Thanks a lot for the offer. Not sure that it is necessary to take the time right now. Hope that does not sound ungrateful for the offer. I don’t mean it to be. Email just does not convey body language.
My posting meant that in finding the Edwards and Streets in those cemeteries, it is another link to the folks of this region. My names are not common among people on this board, so it was interesting to find two there who also appear in the genealogy of my Iowa folks. However, Edwards and Streets are not in my direct line. They might be g-something aunts and uncles, and I am not following those lines right now. My family calls themselves Cherokee. although one has the Blackfoot ID.

March 29, 2004 at 10:32 pm #9487Yes that is the one. Amanda Jane was her first and middle name. I do not know her last name. My mothers side has a lot of Burch’s married into them. They are all very dark with black hair and eyes. I will have to scan those photos so they can be posted. They are pretty interesting. They had 5 daughters, Alice (my great great grandma), Mary, Bertha, Anna and Emma. Also 2 sons named Samuel and William. I have looked at the 1880 census for all Silas Evans’ and have only found a couple that could be him. One says he was born in OH and so were his parents. When searching on Ancestry.com I came across an Evans married to a Whaley in the area. Same township name but different county (Adams and Jackson county, both in same area separated by one county). Maybe a variation of Wheeley and Wheeler. This Whaley’s father was Silas Whaley. I dont know. Like I said it is a dead end for me. Either he was in the census or went by an alias. What do you have on Silas Wheeler Evans and Amanda Jane?
March 29, 2004 at 10:32 pm #9488cr21,
I’ll start a new thread in the Genealogy section of the forum for Silas Evans. Bill
March 29, 2004 at 10:32 pm #9489Dreaminghawk,
Sorry about that “happy face” in the census info – it was supposed to be a colon followed by a close parenthesis sign – which is how a happy face is made, too – didn’t think about it while I was typing !

March 29, 2004 at 10:32 pm #9490Bill writes >>>>> Ella Holman was the wife of Wesley Holman. There is an Ella Meadows, b.abt.1875 and W., dau of Groves Meadows. I don’t know is this is the same Ella or not.
Bill, I don’t think it is the same Ella ……… I know Ella Meadows is Ella HOBGOOD but my notes are in such disarray that I can’t find that info right now…… she may have remarried?
March 29, 2004 at 10:32 pm #9491You’re probably right. The Ella Meadows I mentioned was listed on the 1880 Person Co., NC census, Mt.Tirzah Twp, as the 5 yr old daughter of Groves Meadows. Groves’ mother-in-law Nancy Bumpass was in the same household. If you mean you have already accounted for her as marrying someone other than Wesley Holman, then there’s no candidate for Ella.
March 29, 2004 at 10:32 pm #13250The 1750 tax list of Granville County, NC list the following: William Bowling 1 tithe, James Bowlin 1 tithe, Gideon Bunch 2 tithes (Micajer and William), Thomas Collins Sr. 1 tithe, Samuel Collins 1 tithe, John Collins 1 tithe, Thomas Gibson with tithes Charles and George Gibson.
• GRANVILLE CO NC COURT ORDERS June 20 1754
Robert Harris, Samuel Benton examine Sarah Dunnavan? Dunnigan? an infirm woman regarding her son William Bolling whom she deeded a negro to in 1752.
• They settled on the waters of the Flat River. see “Land Grants from the Earl of Granville to the earliest settlers, The Granville Dist. Of N.C. 1748-1763 Vols 2 & 4 by Hofman.”
• On October 29, 1751 a Grant to was issued to William Churton, for 640 acres on the south side of Flat River joining John Collins on the Rocky Branch.
• On October 28, 1752 a Grant for warrant was issued to Thomas Gibson on the Flat River for 250 acres.(#3775)
• And, 640 acres issued to Joseph Collins on the South West side of the Flat River Witness- Thomas Collins and James Lilkemper.
• Muster Roll Granville Co., NC 10/8/1754–Captain Andrew Hampton’s Company
• John Bolling, James Bolling, William Bolling and Benjamin Bolling are listed.
• Orange County was formed from Granville in 1753. The Flat River area was in the new county.
• From Orange Co., NC Court Records, dated 8/1753–Michael Synnot vs Benjamin Boling
• A 1755 Tax list of Orange County, NC lists Gideon Bunch 1 tithe, Micajer Bunch, 1 tithe, Thomas Collins 3 tithes, Samuel Collins, 2 tithes John Collins,1 tithe, Moses Ridley (Riddle), 1 tithe & wife Mary, Thomas Gibson, 3 tithes, Charles Gibson, 1 tithe, George Gibson 1 tithe, Mager Gibson, 1 tithe, all listed as mulatto. Note that if a family had at least 1/16 Indian, and were not affiliated with a recognized local tribal group, or were black, or mixed-blood, they were often listed as mulatto. Additionally, a John Bolling, son of Wm. is listed, as is a James.
• In June of 1755, a deed of sale was made from Benjamin Bowling to Henry Webb for 300 acres in Orange Co., NC
• From Orange Co., NC Court Records, dated 2/1761–Hercules Ogle vs Benjamin Bolin (petitioner)
• A James Bollin is listed as a resident of Granville Co., NC in that county’s tax list of 1762.
• “Wills, Deeds and Marriages of Orange Co., NC–Will Bk. B, p. 57″ lists a Jean Bowling’s will dated 1/19/1789 (no probate date) w/sons: Archibald, Abraham, Alexander, and Andrew, and daughters Isabel Butler (wife of John), Susannah Boswell, and Elizabeth Bowling.
• Apparently, at least some of them did not obtain legal status for the lands they settled on in Orange Co., NC. As a result, they lost out on the improvements they had made:
• John Brown-Warrants dated Dec 26, 1760, 700 acres on the Flat River, includes Bolins, Riddles and Collins Improvements. Surveyed April 13, 1761; deed dated Oct 14, 1761.
• This sort of business, as well as other factors, apparently prompted the core group to leave the Orange Co., NC area between 1767 and 1770; some stayed, some migrated to the territory that became South Carolina, and some to Pittsylvania County, Virginia.
• A Collins family, along with Moses Riddle and some of the Bolen’s moved to Pittsylvania County, Virginia before 1767 and had land entries on the Sandy River.
• The 1767 Tax list of John Wilson, in Pittsylvania County, VA records a Moses Riddle, and lists him as an Indian, as well as a William Riddle;
• Peter Perkins Pittsylvania County, VA Tax List of 1767 records a Christopher Bowlin, and son William, as well as a Christopher Bowlin JR, James Bowlin, and a Joseph Bowlin.
• The following Bollings are listed in the 1779 Henry Co., VA tax lists for that year: James Bolling, John Bolling, Christopher Bolling SR, William Bolling, James Bolling, John Bolling, Archibald Bolling, John Bolling SR, and John Bolling JR.
• A John Bowling is listed in the Henry Co., VA tax list of 1787.
Gilford Co., NC was formed from Orange and Rowan Co.,s NC in 1770. Eight years later, Randolph Co., NC was formed from Gilford.
• At least some of the descendants of Benjamin Bolling JR, (married circa 1775 to Sarah/Sallie Hancock) son of Benjamin SR, believe that this family was in Randolph Co., NC at the time they were married. A Benjamin Bolling appears in this county in the 1790 census, as does a William Bolling.
• Deed records would seem to back up this claim–Randolph Co. Deed Bk. 2, dated June 15, 1784 lists a James Roberts (wife, Martha) who sold 150 acres of land on the waters of Second Creek to Benjamin Bolling for the sum of 40 lbs.
The dispersal of the core families out of Orange Co., NC that began around 1760 was rekindled time and time again, with families staying in one location only a few years, then moving on.
• A Christopher Boling and a William Boling were listed in Knox Co., TN as early as 1786 (from Thomas Amis’ Account Book 1, 1782-9).
• Knox Co., KY tax lists indicate that a Benjamin Bowling was there in 1801.
• Clay Co., KY tax lists for the years 1897-1829 show a William, Isham, John, Joseph, James, Christopher, Jesse, Spencer, Justice, Justus, Eli, Elias, Elijah, David and Stephen Bowling listed.
• Most of the children of Thomas Collins, for example, migrated to the New River area of Virginia and North Carolina (Botetourte, Fincastle, Grayson, and Montgomery in Virginia, and Ashe Co. NC). The Collins and Gibsons began selling their land on the Flat River in 1767-70 and moved to the back woods sections of the New River where some were listed on tax records in Fincastle County, VA, as “living on Indian Lands.”
• In 1770, Thomas Gibson sold his land on the Flat River (see Orange Co., N.C.. Deed Book 3, page 468). This deed firmly establishes him as the same Thomas who sold his land on the Pamunkey River in Louisa County in 1749 when he made his mark “T”.
• By 1780, Thomas Gibson was settled in Wilkes Co., NC near the South Fork of New River in present day Ashe Co., N.C., (see entry # 1858, Wilkes County, North Carolina, Land Entry Book 1778-1781). By 1800, he and his family were in the Fort Blakemore section along Stony Creek, in (then) Russell Co., VA (later Scott Co., VA), and from there, many removed to Hawkins Co., TN between 1804 and 1808. Among the other core families who had been in Orange Co., NC and left about the same time, the following are found in the Virginia County of Russell in 1802 (listed as white):
March 29, 2004 at 10:32 pm #13308Brenda and All,
This is all very interesting! I want to check that cemetary link too. Can anyone tell me, I need more maps, where on maps to find Eno and Reeds (What were they, Creeks or Rivers?) I’m finding this all way fascinating.:) I’m glad it got pulled out of the slush pile!
cr21,
Have you ever, in all your searching, come across an Ezra Evans who married an Elizabeth Miller and they were the parents of Rachel C. Evans? This is one of our missing links!;)
Well, Love & Light You Guys, Lynella.
March 29, 2004 at 10:32 pm #13322Thanks Brenda.
I wonder if that Thomas Gibson is the same one I am looking for? There was a “Marey Gibson” who was his wife, with a daughter named “Cusiah”, aka Keziah. Mary Gibson is a widow in Lower Russell County, Va (later called Scott County) and also is mentioned in the minutes of Stoney Creek Church.
I have evidence but not proof, this Cusiah Gibson was Keziah Wayland, wife of Nevil Wayland Sr, and she went with the family as a widow (Nevil Jr was church clerk at Stoney Creek) to Arkansas in 1815. There is a Humphrey Gibson already in Arkansas when my Waylands arrived there, and there was a Humphrey Gibson associated with my Thomas Gibson, mentioned in his probate. Humphrey is seen living very close to one of my Wayland families in Arkansas, also.
I know others have talked about a different Thomas Gibson, but maybe the 2 are related??
thanks
vance

Do you have any digital photos of Riddle (Ridley) tombstones in the area?
If so, could you email them to bteel@cecinc.com and bjteel@hotmail.com?
Thanks,
Brandon
March 29, 2004 at 10:32 pm #16077Brandon, there are no known Riddle or Ridley family cemeteries in Person co….. that doesn’t mean there isn’t one. We find lost ones regularly. The current Person co phone book shows 1 listing for a Riddle couple and no Ridley listings….fyi
