In surfing I found this. I thought it was interesting:
http://www.geocities.com/frankoclark/richland/griffin.html
John Griffin’s family received a 250 acres grant on the waters of the Congaree (Toms and Griffins Creek area) in the year 1764. These Griffins were part of the large “free-person-of-color” community in Richland County c1790-1850. Were these the “Sandhillers?” John was possibly half Indian, perhaps Cherokee. His wife’s father was part Saponi from North Carolina. Absalom GRIFFIN, who lived in Richland c1770, was not listed as a person of color, so he and John may have been a half brothers. Sons were Gideon, Morgan and John. Daughter was Hannah or Johannah.
There is more on the URL listed above.

July 22, 2001 at 12:57 pm #5213Brenda I found some very interesting information that I really think you should take a look at. This is about John Collins, David, Joseph, etc… http://genforum.genealogy.com/ga/tattnall/messages/138.html
Go to files button on the Saponi egroup and look at what I will upload there.
here is another interesting one

I believe this may fill some gaps and clear up some things about the John Collins deal and also show why it has all benn so hard to figure out. They all sure did move around allot.

July 22, 2001 at 12:57 pm #5216On Mahenip I found out that he was the last Saponi Chief or leader to leave Fort Christanna. The name Mahenip was suggested as an honorary name from what I was told recently. The link to John Collins was brought to my attention by John Trullinger three years back. In our family the use of names over and over and over again is very common. There is a story about four cousins of ours in Missouri that were stopped by a game warden. When they were asked what their names were they each replied Lawrence Collins. Three of them were brothers and one was a cousin. The warden asked for i.d. to confirm this and sure enough they were all four named Lawrence Collins. This illustrates the confusion and difficulty in straightening out who is who and is made even more compound by the fact that they moved around so much. Of coarse as we all well know our government officials didn’t make things any the more easy.

Now …from what I am told John and David recieved the Bibles because they were so young. David was born just shortly after John Collins made out this will which is dated the 27 Day of Dissember, 1749. David was born 1750 and John just a few years older. The will was excuted on
18th March, 1752 . I believe I have documentation that proves David b. 1750 and my Meredith Collins were related and believed to be cousins, makeing their children second cousins.
Also wanted to mention Chief Mahennip. I believe it was Richard Haithcock that told me that the white guards or settlers would not let the chief plant the crops that last season they were at Fort Christianna, forcing the Chief and his people to go south before winter or they would have all starved to death. Wish Richard was handy to tell me if I remember it correctly. Does anybody know exacally what the location they went to in S.C. ( county or Settlement)?
