Anne,
You posted that you have Nichols…I am trying to find info on my greatgrandmother Rosa Nichols, born in Halifax County. I do not know her parents names other than her mother may be Frannie or Fannie or something like that name. Do you know this name?
Thanks!
February 3, 2008 at 6:22 pm #29766How neat that you are from Wanchese ! I would LOVE to live in that area, and actually hope that I can move there one day when I retire ! And I also LOVE the drama…..have probably seen it 50 times over the years ! This past summer our research group participated in the Virginia
Dare birthday celebration, and were invited to attend the cast party after the drama was over that night. It was wonderful ! And I hope to be back there for this season’s celebrations !

I am not familiar with these Nichols people. Not to say that they aren’t in the family, just that I haven’t heard of them. There seem to be quite a few Nichols, and we could very easily be related !

February 3, 2008 at 6:22 pm #29768Hi….
The Nichols dna study is open to all Nichols males who would like to test. Just do a search under Nichols dna study, and that should take you to the site with all the info you need !

February 3, 2008 at 6:22 pm #29769Hi Anne!
My greatgrandmother was Rosa Nichols, born in Halifax Co….have you ever seen this name in your Nichols?
Thank you!
February 3, 2008 at 6:22 pm #29770Anne…Sorry for the double post!
February 3, 2008 at 6:22 pm #29771I still have my brother that lives down there but I don’t get down there as often as I would like. Wnachese still retains the small fishing village way of life. I love it down there!
I was hoping we could make some connection with the Nichols. I can go back on my grandfather’s side to the early 1700’s but can’t get past Rosa and Thomas Burchell.
I went to school with a Martha Poole who was from Manteo. I din’t keep in touch with her after I married and moved.
February 3, 2008 at 6:22 pm #29772Would you ever like to move back to Wanchese ?
February 3, 2008 at 6:22 pm #29773Also, what other older Nichols names do you have ? I know that there are some Nichols around Bertie, but I haven’t been able to connect my line to them…
February 3, 2008 at 6:22 pm #29774Most definetly!!! I keep telling my brother to save me a piece of land.
I too enjoyed the Lost Colony and often took my kids there when we went down and hope to take the grandkids to see it soon. I used to work Fearings drug store after school and the actors came in there a lot.
I miss the island…it is home! I did live with my grandmother (dau. of Rosa) for a number of years in Leaksville (now Eden) so I guess I knew both ends of the state a bit.
February 3, 2008 at 6:22 pm #29775I don’t have names of any other Nichols…I only know Rosa’s name, date and place of birth, when she died and where she is buried…she’s my “brick wall”!
February 3, 2008 at 6:22 pm #29785my grandmother who was a Burchell. Her parents were Thomas Burchell, b. Sept. 1862 in Horse Pasture, Va. d. sometime between 1910-1920
Well, ya know you’re from the boonies if you’ve ever heard of Horse Pasture, VA. ;~)
My Burchell connection is my Dad’s late cousin Billy. Unfortunately, that is all I know about them. He was the son of my paternal grandmother’s sister (daughters of the folks in my avatar). But she had remarried to a Pratt when she died. Don’t know Billy’s father’s name. Sorry.
February 3, 2008 at 6:22 pm #29819Hi Beeleaf!
We have a Billy Burchill that is related…this is what my brother emailed
me:
I remember Thomas Burchell, I think he is Billie Burchell’s Dad who used to work with Calvin (Thompson) and now works with Calvin, Jr. He used to come down to the coast, a huge, huge man, who had a very, very little wife. I think Hallie is Woots’ Mother.
Thomas Burchill that he speaks of was my grandmother’s brother. My grandmother was Margie Burchell and married Tommy Thompson. Calvin Thompson is my mother’s brother and had a welding shop on the old Stoneville Road.
Is this Billy Burchell your relative???
You said there is NA with the Burchells…may I ask what and how???
Thanks so much!
Robin

Hey, Robin.
Thought I had said NA on both the Bowling and Foley side, not Burchell. Our Billy Burchell would be the son of Inez Foley Pratt. Inez was the daughter of the folks in my avatar (Bowling + Foley + Ross). Strong oral tradition (Cherokee, unproven but tsalagi name part of tradition), evidence of Saponi, Patawomeck (tribal history and documented), maybe some others in there. Also Scotch Irish. ;~)
What little I know of the Burchells was in my previous post.
You said you think Hallie is Woot’s mother. Who is Woot? “Woot” was the first part of another of my grandma’s name.
February 3, 2008 at 6:22 pm #29826Our Woots is my mother’s cousin. We knew Woots mother as Aunt Eck so i did not know her name was Hallie. My brother thinks that’s was Woots mother due to elimination of the others.
My father’s mother (who is now 95) retired from Ridgeway Clocks…that’s in your area!
Thanks for your information!
