Welcome Whitehawk,
If you post this to the genealogy forum, Bill can help you find your family lines. If you search your surnames, you might find additional information if they are found here.

March 16, 2007 at 2:24 am #27272Hi this is granny7 now granny8. I could not log on under my old name no matter how many times I tried. So I just started out new agin. I know about all here knows about the saga of Cornblossom and if she was or wasn’t the daughter of Doublehead. That is where my history ends on one side. On LDS her name is listed as the mother of Elizabeth my gggggrandmother. But a lady named Joyce Reed on another site let me know real quick that just because it was on LDS didn’t mean it was true. My Matthews are called Mathis at one point and as far as William Green Henderson goes no one can find anything about him. I did find out more about my gggrandpa Peter Powell, he was born in NC, 1820, his dad Levi powell in NC 1799. I am not trying to prove I am Indian, I just want to know who I am. My dad said we were black Irish now I lean that might mean something different. My grandpa Matthews said I was a blackfoot. Now this is no joke I thought he ment my feet were dirty. Which they usually were when I was a kid.Daddy said we were crabtree Indians, now that I know was a joke. Help!!
March 16, 2007 at 2:24 am #27275I personally never heard of Crabtree Indians; but that name pops up now and again on Saponitown forums. A Crabtree Creek, valley, and district have been mentioned, all in Wake County, NC. And there was at least one family (said to be Indian) named Crabtree — “whitehawk,” who posted on this thread a few days ago, is descended from them. Most of the Crabtree references were from the 1770s to the 1820s.
Other family names are sometimes used as if they were tribal — not necessarily eastern Siouan, like the Saponi — but others I’ve heard about were at least in the present southeastern US. My wife’s family (Litton, in SW Virginia and NE Tennessee) is one like that. It may just be something that happened as the native languages were replaced by English. Maybe when the tribal name didn’t mean anything in English, and they didn’t know the language in which it did mean something, they just substituted the family name they knew? I’m just speculating.
March 16, 2007 at 2:24 am #27276I really put my foot in my mouth that time! I really didn’t know there was a tribe called Crabtree. I always thought daddy was making that up. Do you believe you can tell if a person is Indian by marks? With my first set of twins the oldest had a red mark between her eyes, her sister had it on the back of her neck. My second set of twins both had a mark on the back of their necks.
March 16, 2007 at 2:24 am #27286Hi Granny8, I have Mathis/Matthews in my background who are supposed to be Blackfoot like you. I haven’t been able to find out much though and I’m hoping my info. might “ring a bell” with you. My GG Grandmother was supposed to be of Blackfoot descent. She was born in TN in 1859. Her name Sarah Francis Mathis and was also known as Sarah Fine Mathis. I have also seen records where her last name was Matthews. All I know of her parents are that her Fathers name was Toby Mathis and that her Mother died when she was a baby. So far thats all I can find about her parents. She married Benjamin Marion Palmer(Born 1857 TN). They moved from Roane County TN by covered wagon to Southern IL. around the turn of the century. Their daughter Martha Hollie Palmer(my G Grandmother) was born in 1898 in TN shorly before they migrated to Southern Il.. I hope this may be something you may know about. For now I’ve hit a brick wall. I appreciate any help you may provide and I Thank-You!!! Who knows maybe wer’e related? LOL Thanks(Pila Huc), Jeff in St. Louis
March 16, 2007 at 2:24 am #27361Hi JeffDB, I am so sorry I took so long to get back to you. I have been trying to find out about Toby. That name sounds familiar. I haven’t found anything yet but will keep on looking. My gggg-grandpa was Anthony Mathis who was born in SC? in the last part of 1700 . His son was Merrit Bergen Mathis born in Tenn. His son was Willam who changed the spelling to Mathews. Those people liked to change their names and moved around a lot.LOL Keep on digging!!
March 16, 2007 at 2:24 am #27370Thank-You so much Granny8!!!!! I don’t even know you and I appreciate any trouble you may have gone through checking that for me!!!! I explained as much as I know about my Mathis/Matthews as I know. Does your Mathis/Matthews have a supposed”Blackfoot”background as well? Yes, those darn ancestors seem to be keeping us extra busy changing around their names I guess!!! LoL Enjoyed hearing from you. Jeff in St. Louis
March 16, 2007 at 2:24 am #27886This seems as good a place as any to paste in a little tidbit I just ran across, pertaining to Swearingens in Beaver County, PA. It’s not about NDN connections, but kind of interesting — about a Conestoga wagon on display in Pittsburgh.
