I am new here and have heard from a friend of the family that we were “blackfoot.” A Cherokee woman let me know that there were other Blackfeet southeast, so I looked it up, and here I am. My family is originally from Surrey, NC and eventually ended up in Iowa. The family is Hickman. I will post geneaology maybe tomorrow, but I need to head to bed….two very high maintenance children here!
July 12, 2009 at 1:48 am #33977Welcome Minagelina, we’ll be happy to hear more about your family.
July 12, 2009 at 1:48 am #33980OK, so now that the hubby is tending to the little ones in the kitchen, I will attempt to do the “begats” here: Elizabeth Mary Chamberlain married to Francis Hickman in early to mid 1700’s, from VA. Their child: Joseph Hickman, Surrey or Rowan, Bladen, NC, married to Mary Westcoat from Prince George MD? Their child: Joseph Hickman, Married to Margaret Jenkins from Prince Georges Co., MD….He dies in Surrey? As you can see, some of the places are messed up. Maybe Joesph Jr. is born in Surrey and dies in same.) Their child: John Hickman, Surrey, MC. who marries Dinah Davis from NC Their child: Thomas Hickman from Surrey (1811?) marries Nancy Mooney from Ohio (1814) who is supposedly Irish and adopted by Quakers Their child: George Davis Hickman, born in Henry Co, IN (born 1845) marries Naomi Jane Tuttle from Washington Township, Indiana? Their child: Albert Hickman (1870) Iowa, marries Emma Schooling from Adams Co., Iowa Their child: Allie Hickman (1892) Mt. Etna, Adams Co., Iowa Up above, Naomi Tuttle’s parents were Daniel David Tuttle (1825) Indiana and Margaret Thomas (1820) VA Up above, Allie Hickman’s husband was George Lyman Thomas (Corning, IA), supposedly Cherokee (there is a Lyman Flanders on Dawes Rolls from MO, but not him….kin?) born 1890 His mother was Marion Elizabeth Flanders (born 1844/48/53?) in Vermont or Virginia, and her parents were Lovina Taylor born 1822 in Ohio and Lyman Flanders, possible date of marriage 1847. This Flanders line stops cold here. I would love info on them as this is my maternal grandma’s line, and her grannie told her we were Cherokee. My assumption was that possibly they fled north during the removal. But maybe they are from another nation? Anyway, any help would be appreciated. I am tired of not knowing the truth, and I’m hoping someone will hold the key here. Not likely, but hey, it’s a shot The funny thing is, my sister who is working on her Masters in communications was honored at an awards ceremony for several Native students. We both figured she’d be the whitest person there. Well not only was she not, but she looked like a skinnier, whiter, older version of an Oneida girl there. It confirmed that our oral tradition had to be true, but that we just may have a lot of historical “fixin’ up” to do. I just hate running around having people look at us like we’re going to say our gg grannie was a “Cherokee Princess”…..ugh!!!!!!! Nope, just trying to find our way home. Anyway, enough of my book. Thanks for the welcome…glad to be here! Oh and sorry if this is not very legible. I tried to go back and add a bunch of spaces and new paragraphs, but it doesn’t seem to be letting me do so.

Thank you for the link. However, it gave me an error: page is not available or problem with address.

Here is another way to get there. Just google, Sharlee’s cherokee heritage site. There is a search engine for any surname you choose. Tons of great info here. Saj

InactiveHi again Saj!
I just noticed your posts. My gggg-gm Ann McBride was m.#2 to Frederick Fisher. He was a member of The Committee of Safety, Rowan, NC during the Revolution.
Their daughter, Christiana F. is my ggg-gm m. Williamson Harris.
Her brother Charles was a Congressman early 1800’s.
Also , Lucy Scott m. ? Edward Harris ancestor of Williamson.
Edward was the son of Captain Thomas H. ( Immigrant 1611 VA ) m. #1 1623 to take her two young children there. She left them there. She returned
with Anne Greenlief and a 15 yr old English servant girl, Elizabeth. I think this Eliz. m. a servant named Th? Prather.
Capt. Thomas Harris’s 2nd wife, Joanne Osborne, was the mother of Edward. Joanne’s father was Capt Thomas Osborne ( mother unk)
who arrived 1619.
My gggg-gm Sarah Jenkins m. David Parker whose mother was Susan Southall.
I wrote about her already. Her father, was John Hickman Jenkins whose name was often spelled Genkins. John’s L W & T— 1799 in Halifax, VA mentions Sarah and husband, David Parker , her two sisters Betsey m. Emanuel Tomb and Anne m. forgot first name ?– Johnson.
Anne( mother’s first name, last _? unk )
Only one son, John Hickman Jenkins,Jr. I think a brother or his grandfather- a John — had a brother named James who married twice.
#1 Mary Barnes #2 Mary Cherry.
I’ll dig up more notes.

InactiveJust a correction, that was Lucy Stewart not Scott.
July 12, 2009 at 1:48 am #35485Minagelina,
I just found this site and saw your post. I grew up in Iowa and Lovina Taylor and Lyman Flanders are my great great grandparents. I think I’ve figured out more about Lyman’s ancestors. I’d love to hear back from you.

July 12, 2009 at 1:48 am #35486Hi Ken,
I think we really are related. Who are your grandparents? I have a cousin Kenneth Brown, and wasn’t sure if it was you using a different last name but a family name. Please tell me what you know if you can. I am desperate to find out more about that line of our family. Feel free to privately email me if you can. I am very excited to get this from you, and my sister is too (I spoke over the phone with her about this.)
Julie
