Hello all,
My name is John R Sacco and I am from, live in, and currently teach in Mississippi. I want to preface I am not really sure that we have a documented Indian ancestor and technically all such information is hearsay. My interest in the subject began with my genealogy work on my mother’s side, the Roberts. My mother told me her dad, Aaron Roberts, said that we have Indian blood in the family and given his generation that is not something that would have been readily said or discussed so I have little to believe that there was any hidden agenda or reason to lie about such a claim; however, as of now it is still just that, a claim. On the Roberts side of the family, there are two lines that are suspect.
Maudie Hale (MS) is my great grandmother and her parents are John Samuel Hale (MS) and Georgeanna Davis (MS). John S Hale’s parents are Samuel Floyd Hale (GA) and Nancy Jane Fewell (TN). Samuel Hale was born in 1815-1817, we’re not really sure which date, but appears in Independence County, Arkansas in 1833 making him 16-18 at the time which is suspect because that is about the time of the Emigrant Cherokees, or Settlers.
Then there is line number two, the Hazelwoods from Virginia. This particular surname I’m close to positive itself isn’t Indian but there are two women that could be. Hester Ann Hazelwood (MS) is my great-great grandmother and her parents are William Temple Hazelwood (VA) and Nancy Elizabeth Allen (VA). I cannot find anything on Nancy Elizabeth Allen. William T Hazelwood’s parents are John Hazelwood (VA) and Nancy Cole (VA). I cannot find anything on Nancy Cole. The only evidence I have that might be either suspect is 1that William Hazelwood moved from Virginia to Indiana to have 5 children, he had two in Virginia; then he moves to Mississippi sometime after 1846 to have his last two children; lastly 2there is a picture of Hester and she does not appear to be pure European British.

Your story is not unlike several people’s. Many came from VA/NC to Indiana as well, mine included. There is no documentation on many lines, others only have what the Friends (Quakers) documented. You are in the right place. Have you read this thread about Allen’s and Hazelwood’s: Shelton

June 24, 2016 at 4:57 pm #38030Welcome to Saponitown, Sacco. You are on the right track and at the right place. Of those I know who stayed in NC/VA, the Roberts’s, Cole’s, Allen’s, and Davis’s all have stories or evidence of having ndn roots. Usually, you will find multiple mixed lines coming out of this area because VA colonial law forced mixed-bloods to marry mixed-bloods. As Marc said, the migration pattern also is very familiar. Welcome home, brother.
btw……. Hester looks like the Carroll Co,VA Allen’s. If so, then we are cousins 😉

Yes, thank you very much for sharing. It is very close, but still not quite. Sadly, the only thing I know about Nancy Elizabeth Allen is that she was born in Virginia in 1808 and died in 1888 in Holmes County, MS…a widow of William T Hazelwood.
June 24, 2016 at 4:57 pm #38034It is comforting but sad as well that so many families went through such trouble. I am a history person but I am very confused why so many left Virginia to Indiana? I truly didn’t know Virginia had such a strict social code in place during the colonial period. Could you elaborate further when the colonial legislature began enacting social codes for the races in Virginia?

It is possible, the only other thing I know about the Allen’s is Nancy E Allen married William T Hazelwood January 9. 1832 in Campbell, VA which is not far from Carroll Co, VA.
June 24, 2016 at 4:57 pm #38059Sorry for the delay in replying. Our computer died and I finally got a tablet but typing is very difficult on it. There is a link to an article that goes into great detail on the timeline of disinfranchisement laws in Virginia colony. I can’t recall which article, but it would be enlightening to read them all anyhow. I do recall that it became illegal for a freed African to have English indentured servants by the 1680s and in 1703 it became illegal for a person known by his community to not be 100% white to marry white. Along with numerous other laws concerning testifying and land ownership and child rearing, by the early 1700s, all brown people in Virginia colony were undoubtedly second class citizens. When the opportunity to escape this discrimination arose, many mixed race people took it. As discrimination caught up to them at each new location, they moved to the next new wilderness.

For anyone interested in GEDmatch comparisons, my kit number is A321312. I’ve posted some family surname below that are linked to Siouxian and Algonquian tribes back to Virginia and North Carolina on my mother’s side. So I am sure we are related somehow.

June 24, 2016 at 4:57 pm #38070Mecou Luan, welcome to SaponiTown!
Bailey, Lllewellyn and Potter are shared names. Scanning your blog, it looks well sourced. Biwa for sharing!
Your GedMatch kit is not a match to my close family. You are a match to our 3rd cousin Cheryl Trowbridge (A248622). She is a cousin to us on Brower, Bechtel, Gates and Mount Blackfoot-Siouan mixed lines, she is also a descendant of Old Ned Sizemore. She matches you at 10.4cM on the X chromosome.
June 24, 2016 at 4:57 pm #38071Welcome.
I am going to be on and off again. I have recently moved and school has started up again but I’ll try as the things settle down to post and share whatever information that is relevant.
June 24, 2016 at 4:57 pm #38072Luan,
What can you tell me about your Pettus line?

June 24, 2016 at 4:57 pm #38075Hi, All,
Sorry about the delay in replying. I am not quite used to the forum yet.
My own GEDmatch.com kit numbers are A321312 and M959119. They match differently, so you might try both of them.
I have had some success in matching back into lines as far back as we all might be related by lowering the matching parameters, like I’ve read here.
Pettus shows up as possibility for me in early to mid 1600s. I still don’t know for sure. Some of this information is from Don Greene’s and Bill Deyo’s work, and I’d appreciate any comment you might have on it. I’ve researched the early part of it myself, but I don’t have access to all their sources. They and others have indicated that Christian Pettus was the daughter of Ka-Okee and Capt. Pettus and granddaughter of Matoaka/Pocahontas and Kocoum.

June 24, 2016 at 4:57 pm #38076Cheryl, I am sorry–I misread what you asked me for. My most recent Gedcom number is 7995899. It’s more than a year and a half out of date. My tree on Ancestry.com is the most recently updated.
