This picture was in possesion of my ancestors who were in the line with Blackfoot ID. Written on it is ‘Uncle Sam Knode and wife’. This came from the Smith/Gates side of my family. I have not been able to verify to whom he is an uncle, but he lived in OH/IN at the same time as my ancestors.
The Knode family (also spelled Kenode and Knodt) has oral history of being ‘American Indian’ and ‘Black Dutch’. Samuel Knode’s children marry into the Blood Family. Other Knodes marry into the Trucks family (also spelled Truck, Trux, Drux, Trosch, and Trush. These names seem fairly uncommon so am wondering if anyone else has heard of them?
August 25, 2014 at 7:28 am #36538August 25, 2014 at 7:28 am #36539The Trucks seems to come from the same time/place as my Bayley/Pontius lines (late 1700s Maryland).
Pontius is also spelled Punches/Ponchus/Pontzius/Pontious/Poetgens/Pontus. This line has been studied in depth including DNA. Some Punches lines are haplogroup C. If I’m not mistaken Linda has an Elizabeth Pontius (b.1825 Hocking Co OH) marrying Ezra Hudson. My Johan Andrew Pontious died in neighboring Ross Co in 1825 and his brother Johan George Pontius died in Pickaway Co (neighboring Ross and Hocking Co) in 1824.
My Bayley (later of Circleville OH, then Grant IN) line descends from Pontius and they tie to the Bunch family through Ted Collins genealogy page. The Bayleys marry into the Millers (Pendelton WV) who also tie to the Bunch family.
The last ancestor back in this line I have a picture of is Zillah Bayley.
– Daughter of Andrew Bayley (b. MD) and Eve Ponchus (b. PA) married 1807 in Ross Co Ohio
August 25, 2014 at 7:28 am #36541Not for certain this picture is from the Smith/Gates side. It may be from the Coppock/Marshall side, one cousin on this side had the name Truax.
August 25, 2014 at 7:28 am #37393Seeing GGM_Robbins’ Trax name and family locations I went back and looked more closely at this line.
Turns out that GGM_Robbins’ ancestor Ludwig ‘Louis’ Trax (first generation immigrant) is also recorded as Louis (Lewis) Truax, born 6 Mar 1773 Alsace Lorraine, d 1840 PA. So Trax is another variant of Truax/Trux/DeTrieux/DeTreaux
Ludwig Louis Trax parents are Ludwig Trax b. 1739 Alsace Lorraine, d. 9 Jan 1797 Alsace Lorraine and Ewa Schwartz b. 1742 Alsace Lorraine -d. 28 Nov 1816 Alsace Lorraine.
Speaking to my mother, she remembers her father, Norman Drybread, taking her to visit cousin Dorothy Elizabeth Truax, maiden name Cooper, (1922-) who was married to Frank L Truax Jr (1919-1984). My mother asked her about Maude Marshall – her grandmother, who died 8 days after giving birth to her father. She remembered her as a “sweet” lady.
This Truax line are cousins to me through the Coppocks and Bayleys – the same Zillah Bayley whose picture is above. But I cannot tell if they are also descended from Lewis Trax/Truax.
My Frank L Truax Jr is the son of Frank L Truax Sr (1872-1947) born in IN and Ada J Johnson (1878-) born IL. Frank L Truax Sr is the son of James D Truax (1846-1923) IN and Martha J (1853-)
Another Indiana Truax line marries into the Tinsleys. The Tinsley line is another one with oral history of Saponi (Blackfoot) ancestry.
Frank M Truax (1890 – 1960) Delaware IN was the son of Isaac D Truax (1853-1939) and Maragaret Ann Tinsley (1861-1934). She is the daughter of William Murray Tinsley (1836-1915) and Julia Ann Clevinger (1837-1910). William Murray Tinsley is the son of Malachi Tinsley b 5 Jun 1816 KY d 10 May 1882 Wells IN and Margaret Eleanor Murray b 21 Dec 1815 PA, d 22 Jul 1896 Wells IN.
Here are some family pictures from this Truax/Tinsley line:
August 25, 2014 at 7:28 am #37399Marc,
I have a Joseph R. PHILIPS (b. about 1842) who married Henrietta TRAX (my 3rd great aunt). In my notes I have the following:
Joseph “owned and operated a blacksmith shop which stood south of the present Peters Creek Baptist Church on the western side of route 88.” His family “lived in a story and a half log house which stood about 100 feet south of the present Baptist church.” He had lived in this house, built by Samuel Murray in the 1780’s, since 1850. Samuel was a “brother of John Murray who built and owned the old log Trax home. The Murray brothers, Samuel, John, George and their sister, a Mrs. Armstrong, bought the David Steel tract of land and built four log houses on it. The Murray were the first pioneer settlers in what is now the town of Library.” (The Trax Family in Library by Harold R. Philips)
On the 1870 federal census for Snowden, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, John MURRAY is on the same page as Joseph PHILIPS. George TRAX is a neighbor to Joseph and Lewis & Elizabeth TRAX are on the following page. I know it’s a longshot, but your Margaret Eleanor MURRAY was born in Pennsylvania. Do you know where?
Just realized that today is May 13th. Happy Birthday!
Cindy
August 25, 2014 at 7:28 am #37400Margaret Eleanor Murray was born in Somerset PA, she was in Wayne IN at 20 years old when she married Malachi Tinsley.
After some more time researching I’m seeing a different immigrant than Ludwig Louis Trax for my Truax line. Philippe DuTrieux b. 18 Jul 1586 France – d. 8 Sep 1653 New Amsterdam NY. Also from NE France and Huguenot like Ludwig Trax, he came to NY in 1623.
I also found a photo with Frank Truax and Adah Johnston. They are 6th and 7th in the top row. The first and second in the top row are his father and mother James and Martha (Smith) Truax.August 25, 2014 at 7:28 am #37403MarcSnelling;38160 wrote: Margaret Eleanor Murray was born in Somerset PA, she was in Wayne IN at 20 years old when she married Malachi Tinsley.
Somerset is about 65 miles southeast of Library, PA, where my Trax line originally settled.

I have a few families from this general area late 1700s, like the Drybreads, who are my connection to Truax/Trax. Another uncommon name coming from this area that is in your Kutz/Trax database is Teagarden. Merritt is one from a DNA cousin’s tree. Snyder and Waters could be connections. More common matches on Miller, Thomas, and White I’m not seeing any connection.
August 25, 2014 at 7:28 am #37436There seem to be several variants of DeTrieux/DeTreaux/DeTraux/Truax/Trax/Trucks/Trux/Drux/Trosh/Trush and different French-German settlers.
I found another one Troxel that seems to fit the pattern. Expanding my tree out I see James Troxel b.1846 IL married to Harriet ‘Hattie’ Ayers b.3 Feb 1852 WI. His father was supposedly from Germany. Hattie Ayers parents are George Manny Ayers and Harriet Moon.
August 25, 2014 at 7:28 am #37438I was just looking at Lena Schooley’s tree as she is a Clovis match to us and descends from Eleazar Cottrell of Monmouth NJ. She is also a Traux…Phillip Traux 1676 Monmouth NJ/Sarah LaRue though daughter Charity Traux married Richard Pittman.
Here is her tree.. Let me know if you see connections

August 25, 2014 at 7:28 am #37440I have a Joseph Irwin WHITE (1840-1904) in Clarion Co., PA. His daughter, Ida Belle WHITE (1865-1927) married Harry Brady TRAX(1865-1945) and settled in Venango Co., PA. Harry’s son, Paul Oscar TRAX (1902-1978) married Mary Katherine THOMAS (1904-1986). They lived in Venango Co.
I also have a Musa MERRITT (1874-1959) who married Judson TRAX(1869-1954). They settled in Venango Co., PA. The only TRAX variations I have encountered in my family were prior to emigrating. I’m curious, how did you determine that Ludwig Louis TRAX was Huguenot?
TEAGARDEN is from my mom’s line, so unlikely to connect to the TRAX family.
August 25, 2014 at 7:28 am #37441Don’t forget to search McMurray. My ancestor was William McMurray who came from northern PA and changed his name to Murray by the time he died in Morgan County, OH.

Yes my Truax cousin and Lena Schooley are both descended from LaRue Jacob Truax 1705-1774. Lena through his son Samuel Truax 1743-1801, my cousin descends from his brother Benjamin B Truax 1731-1801.

I looked at it a bit deeper and I’m not 100% that Ludwig Louis Trax was Huguenot. I had read that Ludwig Louis Trax or his brothers were body guards of Napoleon Bonaparte in France (he had many). Have you seen this in your research?
The DeTrieux/DeTreaux line’s European roots may originate from the Belgian town of Trieu. At any rate all these ancestors Trax/Truax or otherwise come from Bas-Rhin (Lower Rhine), Alsace-Lorraine, or the Walloon region of Belgium. All the same general area.
