November 9, 2008 at 8:23 pm #33158Beefleaf, I was just checking on some connections. The Jetts were intermarried with the Shingletons(Elizabeth) who marry John M Rogers 1814 Va
in Harrison Co Kentucky to Jackson Co Mo and then we have the Greens (Chief). Also
to Dan, we are finding Rice connections also. Will post more as I am finding out this history. Margaret K Quote from posting of the Potawomecks.
The wedding is based on the diary of English colonist Henry Spelman, who was traded to the Indians for a town site and later lived with the Patawomecks. And while the ceremony itself is documented, the Patawomeck tribe itself would not have been here to take part in the ceremony had it not been for the action of Chief Green in re-establishing it eight years ago. “We wanted to keep our identity from getting lost because everybody was moving away and forgetting the stories that had been passed down – because our tribe is probably the one that saved America. We gave Jamestown the corn when they were starving,” said William “Night Owl” Deyo, tribe historian and author of several books. It is their history and culture that is the priority for the 400 descendants living in region around Stafford – with surnames like Newton, Bullock, Green and Jett. Their ancestors manned the northern frontier of the Powhatan empire. This is the tribe that Pocahontas married into before the English came.
November 9, 2008 at 8:23 pm #33329To all Green Native American researchers. I have been reading over the Big Neck War
of Cabins Howard Co Missouri area. Big Neck belonged to the Iowan tribe. If you
look at their tribal history page, Green is one of their surnames. Now why this is
of importance to my research is because this tribe finally settled in Payne Co and Perkins Co Oklahoma which is mentioned on my husband’s birth certificate. Could it be
that our Greens are not Cherokee but Iowan? They certainly were in the area of Howard
and Boone Co Missouri. It is quite possible that one of the Green men had a child
of an Iowan woman. I will try to find out more about this Green family that is listed.
Here is the link of surnames of this tribe. Margaret K

November 9, 2008 at 8:23 pm #33350I didn’t know that the Iowas were living down here. I don’t live too far from this area near Boonville, MO. The Missouris and Osages lived in this area.
November 9, 2008 at 8:23 pm #33354HI, Yes the Osage were there and the Iowans, who merged at some time with
the Sax and Fox and the Otoes. Then Missouri removed all the tribes in 1836.
some went then to other places. Sad story but familiar story in what happened
to all the tribes.
November 9, 2008 at 8:23 pm #33432Margaret K….two questions for you:
1) You mentioned the surname LAND a while back. Are you researching that name? I have a friend named Doug Land who claims Melungeon. If interested, I can put you in contact with him.
2) The Greens…do you know of a line from Gloucester Point VA? There is a group/community of people we refer to as “Guineamen” or watermen (occupation) that live mostly at the southern end of Gloucester. They have this “hackeneyed” type of English and seem to be a mixture of ethnicities and they keep to themselves…which is hard to tap into. This community is mostly surnames of GREEN and WEST.
My mother is a GREEN, but I have yet to connect those with her family (AA), which is mixed up too….
November 9, 2008 at 8:23 pm #33435HI, here is what I have on the Lands. I believe that Thomas Land was Joshua’s
father and his Mother was Elizabeth Cummins. On the Greens I am still trying to figure out that history. We have a Thoda Frances Green 1842 that married William David Land
in Howard Co Missouri. She is supposed to be Cherokee but I can not find the Indian
connections wtih that family so still big question mark on her? It could be mistaken history, it just isn’t anything I can document. Here is the Land link, the
best one I can find on their history. John M Land was in the Jesse James gang
and Mary Rogers married him after William Webb died. If this connects to Doug,
have him contact me. Would be happy to share and get any information. I am constantly searching. Margaret K

November 9, 2008 at 8:23 pm #33485My Greens are Shawnee. I believe that Cherokee was a designation for “tame” Indians. In fact, I found such a things in a treaty that stated that the Shawnee could join the Cherokee, as they were civilized enough.

November 9, 2008 at 8:23 pm #33511OK, the Otoes and the Missouris merged into the Otoe/Missouri Tribe the live near the Kaw and the Poncas. They have their Otoe/Missouri encampment in the spring, I think. The Missouris were settled norht of the Missouri river near present day Saline and Howard co’s. The Oroes came from just a little further up north near and in Iowa, as did the Iowas. Some Sauk/Faux came west and settled in Iowa, they are now called Misquakee(pardon the spelling) near Tama Iowa and another group went on into KS just west of Saint Jopseph MO in the White Cloud Res. They have a very nice Casino by the way. Some more of the Sac and Fox went on down south closer to OK City, OK, actually east of there. A plce around Stroud OK. These Sac and Fox live near some Shawnees who moved south and west. Many of the Shawnee do live more in the eastern portion of OK. The one in the eastern sector were and some still are under the command of the Cherokee Nation of OK as were the Western Delaware.
I believe the Green(e) the you may be looking for (if Cherokee) would be a Gardner Green(e). There are many descendents of this man, or at least those who say they are. Most of these are waiting for some kind of Govn’t settlement. Actually if you think about it as many of this family as there are they would only recieve a dollar or two after the lawyers take what they want.

Just found a Swaringen DNA cousin. Cannot find a paper trail yet.
November 9, 2008 at 8:23 pm #37686The connection is through the Butts. I don’t know if you connect to them or not, although if you have Dinah Darke Butt, you do.
Check Dennis Butt’s website. He might have the link: http://dennis-william-butt.com/

Yes, I think that’s correct. Snowflower was unaware of any Greens in TN. Yes, I have Dinah Darke Butte, too. Still researching…
November 9, 2008 at 8:23 pm #37699I stumbled upon this image from an Oct, 2013, post on http://moundbuilder.blogspot.com. The origin of the map is not stated, but I found it quite interesting and it confirms a lot of what I have learned from Saponitown members about my Green ancestors.
