I have had no luck in finding the parents of my great Grandmother Nancy Wright.
she was born 1858-1860 in Arkansas, I was told or probably not, as stories go. I was told that her parents at least ended up durning the trail of tears, in
fort sebastian arkansas, or maybe it was Fort Smith. :confused: Everyone I could ask is now deceased, and can only go on what my brother told me before he passed way.
I have found that
she was married 5 times.
John Hamilton 1879
JH Cooper 1882
Jacob Blankenship 1889
William Leonard 1897
George Pittman 1906
are the names and marriage dates.
She died, after being gorged by a bull she had raised
after May 11 1910 out side of Locke Crawford Arkansas.
she had one brother that we know of, but do not know anything of him I only know his name was Sterling.
I don’t know if this info will help but I live in Benton Co., Ar. There are a lot of Wright’s burried here. Malinda Wright come from Tn with her husband William Oakes and many other Wright’s. Malinda’s parents were Joshua Foster Wright and Susan Lamar. Both were from Randolph Co., NC. I hope this gives you some help.

Nancy was born about 1858 in Arkansas
she married John L. Hamilton January 24, 1879 in Crawford Co. Arkansas.she was 18 he was 37.
so if that is true, Nancy would of been born in 1860.
she then married J.H. Cooper, 13th August 1882 in Crawford Co. Arkansasshe was 21 he was 26, that again would put her born 1860.
she married Jacob B. Blankenship June 12th 1889 Crawford co. Arkansas hewas 52 her age is blank. if you go by 1860 she would have been about 29.
Nancy’s fourth marriage was to William Leonard August 18, 1897 inCrawford Co. Arkansas. he was 52 she was 41, but this would of made herborn 1855, I am doubtful this was her correct age.
Nancy’s fifth marriage was to George W. Pittman March 22 1906 inSebastian co. Arkansas. she married him under the name of Blankenship.He was 62 and she was 46. Taking this age, she would of been born 1859unless she gave the age she would be in September then her age would ofbeen 1860 birth year.
According to the Crawford Arkansas chanceroy records Nancy was notdivorced from William Leonard. There could only be three possibilitiesto this:
Nancy married her fifth husband and never divorced from her fourth husband.
2. Nancy received a divorce from another county, at this time no other divorce records have been found.,
3. Between November 1905 when she appeared in court and before the 22ndday of March when she married George Pittman she received word thatWilliam Leonard had died. If this happened she would have then no reason to continue the divorce proceedings she had started so she went ahead anmarried and at the next court term dropped the divorce.
Nancy was gorged to death by a bull ox she had raised as a pet. she diedbetween June 1910 and October of 1911, when George remarried. InCrawford Co. Arkansas.
Who her parents are I have not figured out. there is a John BrittonWright, on the 1860 Census of Crawford Co. Arkansas with a daughter named Nancy, but this Nancy’s middle name is Elizabeth and my Nancy’s middle name was Ann.
Is the family story that these Wright’s had Native blood? You mentioned the Trail of Tears. Were they part of that?
yes, they were supposed to have been. I have some old photo’s of her, her daughter, and also, you can tell from my grandmother, and mother and younger sister.
I hear that there are Nanticoke and Pamunkey with the Wright name, though they wouldn’t have been hassled with the Removal, I wouldn’t think. I imagine you’ve already checked with Cherokee rolls. She certainly had a tumultuous life, which I guess you would expect after that kind of trauma.
Have you used the search feature to see of her name/location has come up here before?
I am not sure Stacey, she was married so many times, and there are so many questions.
I have three photo’s of her, one we think was when she was deceased.
but I don’t remember census, I will look and see, and let you know.

she had so many names, I have searched every roll I could find, but with out parents names, or a for sure place the started from, I only know her brother went by Sterling, and never knew her sisters name.

My family is bugging me for supper. 🙂 I found the 1900 census for her. I will look for others later tonight and post them if you don’t have them.
The 1900 census said she was born Sept. 1858 in Arkansas and that she had 12 children with only 4 still living. All 4 were living with her: Louisa (4) Blankenship, Mary (7) Blankenship, Rhoda Ann (10) Blankenship. And, one married daughter: Sarah (20) Smith and grandson Henry (3) Smith.

On FamilySearch, there is a Nancy E. Wright born 1857 in Crawford, Arkansas, who parents are John Brinton Wright and Elizabeth Rebecca Dyer; however, no other information is given, but I did find some census records, so I don’t know if this is her family or not.

Nancy married George Pittman. Even though the title for Arkansas Marriages, 1779-1992 on Ancestry.com say 1779-1992 for Crawford County, it only has years 1877-1896. Also, for Sebastian County, it says it covers 1847-1992; however, when I ran a search the lastest it seemed to find was 1904, so I wasn’t able to find this one.

There is quite a bit of information on Ancestry on Rhoda and Walter’s children…marriage records, some marriage licenses, obituary for Walter b. 1925 d. 1999, Army info, etc.
Ancestry also has the actual (and in some cases their marriage application) Missouri Marriage Records from 1805-2002.
I found some marriages for Rhoda and Walter’s children. There were three marriages for Walter Jacob Hodgett b. 26 Sep 1925 (Frances Evelyn Woodrum, Thelma Wallace, & Dorothy M. Rainess). One for Bertha Lou Hodgett to Vernon Edgar Smith. Clifford Hodgett to Irene Rice. Ralph Hodgett to Thelma Alexander. There were also some later ones for Anna Mae Hodgett to Samuel G. Wright (m’d 1939) and Dale Ann Lacy (m’d 1966). And, Patty Lee Hodgett to Clarence W. Payne (m’d 1964).
