Hi,
I now live in Maryland but was born and raised in the Nash-Edgecombe-Wilson counties of NC. I am trying to find additional information on the Tuckers, reportedly Native American, that ended up in Nash County, NC but earlier may have lived in the SE VA area, Norfolk and/or Nansemond (Suffolk).
My 3G Grandparents were Willis Ward, Jr. and Lucy Tucker (b 20 Mar 1791), married on 24 Dec 1811 in Nash County, NC. My 4G Grandparents, Lucy’s parents, were James Tucker, Jr. (d Feb 1797) and Phereby Melton. My 5G Grandparents, James’ parents, were James Tucker, Sr. (b bef 1770, d after 1795) and Priscilla ? . Several census records have Lucy listed as “white” but from what I have read, many “Indians” were listed as “white” during the 1800’s and even into the 1900’s.
In the book, Rackley – A Southern Colonial Family, by Potter & Rackley, James Tucker, Sr. is listed as a Nansemond Indian from Norfolk, VA. A photograph of his granddaughter Lucy is reported to reveal the high cheekbones characteristic of Native Americans. The authors say that Tucker is a prominent surname among the Siouan-speaking Saponi Tribe and that the Rackleys and Tuckers were neighbors along the Sapony Creek in Nash County.
Any help in confirming this Native American heritage would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Wayne Walker
December 15, 2005 at 2:21 am #18146Tucker is a name within the Nansemond also. Do you have any Bass? Oh I forgot to tell you I’m from Edgecombe County my grandmother was born in Nash County. She was a Pridgen. Her Grandmother Musy Susan Etheridge was Native as was her grandfather John Moore (who I have traced to the Nottoway). What surnames do you have in your family? Also it is not uncommon for Indians to be listed white in this area especially if they are mixed bloods and/or they married a white man.

I forgot to ask you when you were growing up did the stories of being native american surround you? I mean like did many families claim this ancestry? What town did you grow up near? The reason I ask is I grew up around Etheridges, Sessums, Wynnes, Branches and hey all claimed this and as I did my research I found out I descend from everyone of these families. By the way I’m a Davenport ever heard of us? How about Rogers, my mother is a Rogers? Ever been to Conetoe? and if you ever went speeding thru Pinetops did a officer by the name of Rogers ever pull you over? LOL he was my grandfather…

December 15, 2005 at 2:21 am #18156Hi Wayne!
Your Phereby Melton, daughter of Zachariah Melton and Sarah Thomas, son of John Melton….John is a brother of Robert Melton who had Nathan married to Susannah and then Nancy Allen. And where do you trace your Walker name to? That’s one of my direct surnames.

December 15, 2005 at 2:21 am #18161Hi Linda, thanks for your post.
I haven’t run across the Bass name in my research yet but I have a long way to go with searches of my various lines.
My 6th Great-Grandparents were Jesse Pridgen (b abt 1744 d 1816) and Mary Batchelor. Their daughter Patience married Thomas Dixon, Jr. (5th Great Grandparents). One of my sisters married a Pridgen from Rocky Mount area.
My main surnames are Winstead, Walker, Edwards, & Baker.
I grew up in Rocky Mount or in nearby communities. From about 12-18 years old, lived in West Mount Community. Graduated from Benvenue HS.
I knew some of the same names you mentioned. I don’t have any Rogers but I graduated with a Rogers.
Don’t remember being in Conetoe.
The Tuckers I asked about are in my Mother’s line. I also have Cherokee in my Father’s line.

Conetoe is over by the Pitt County and Martin County lines 8miles east of Tarboro this is were I grew up, not far from Bethel. Mom grew up in Pinetops, which is about 9 miles to the south of Conetoe. The Davenports (my fathers family) owned couple hundred acres between Conetoe and Tarboro. Near the Whitehurst family who I also decsend from thru the Davenport’s. Then there were the Whitaker well and so on. This is great sure glad to met you.

December 15, 2005 at 2:21 am #18171Wayne,
We’ll have to see about the Walkers. Mine go back to William Walker and Elizabeth Warren originally. William born 1640 New Kent co or Hanover? died Aug 1723. Elizabeth presented her own will 16 Jan 1726/7 listing her 8 children.
Daughter Elizabeth Walker married Robert Allen (Allin). I have lots of info on Walkers but would need to do some research to see if we would connect unless you already have your Walker line back that early in time.
The Melton’s….see this,
http://www.rootsweb.com/~tngenny1/query9.html
and Robert Melton is a son of Richard who married Orpha? Laten but of a different wife, Mary. Robert is the connection to the Allen lines. Sue J Oh, P.S. scroll down to the third post!!!:)
December 15, 2005 at 2:21 am #18178Sue, I don’t have Walkers but I bet if Wayne and I talk all this out we are going to find alot of families we both belong to.
