Someone mentioned Martinsville to me earlier.It’s a 3 hr drive,maybe longer.Don’t think I’ll be going;may need to stay overnight if I go.

We have been asked to go to this one before..and have not yet attended. It’s only about 2 hrs. from us. My grandson has been asking to go to a pow wow. We figure this is a good one for him…it’s a day trip for us and close to home….he’s only 6. And I think there’s a museum close by as well…

That address would be the same place it was at before, btw. For some reason, I thought it was going to be near the museum this time. It’s apparently at Farmer’s Market. Might have some really good maters on the buffalo burgers. ;~)

The 23rd Annual Indian Festival will be held at the Martinsville Middle School (sports field) in Uptown Martinsville at 201 Brown Street. This is located only several blocks from last year’s location.
He also said they should have the flyer on the web site in a few days.
Well, a flyer would be kinda handy since the pow wow is in just a few weeks. I guess we’ll just wait and see. I was hoping it would be close to the museum so I could walk up there and see their exhibit…and thought it would be interesting to Austin (my grandson).
I would have liked to have attended this Pow wow…you all will have to post your thoughts. I really enjoyed the museum…it is linked with the Smithonian and has some really good stuff…even talks of my Grundy, VA…amazing for a little boro of 1100 souls. The Jamestown display was good, not sure if they still have it now, but this place is “Kid Friendly,” which was wonderful!

I have been hiding out in the North Woods…will be heading back up on Friday for the weekend…the last hoorah! In Minnesota you have to drink summer up while ya can! Update us on the Pow wow, hope it is a moving experience for you, since it is home soil for you. Blessings,

Pow Wow Update
The Virginia Museum of Natural History’s 23rd Annual Indian Festival will be held on Saturday, September 15 from noon to 5 p.m. outside the Martinsville Middle School, at 201 Brown St., in Uptown Martinsville, Virginia. Native Americans in full regalia, host and guest drums, and jingle, fancy and hoop dancers will headline the event. Many of the dancers participating in this year’s festival also participated in a recent trip to England as part of the Jamestown 2007 commemoration. In addition to the performers, the festival includes weapons and lifestyles demonstrations, children’s activities, crafts and vendors.
A ceremonial powwow begins at noon and will feature a grand entry procession of many tribal affiliations, including chiefs, head dancers, elders, and children. Master of Ceremonies Powhatan Red Cloud Owen will direct the activities in the arena and will explain the symbolism, protocol, and spiritual meanings of the dances, regalia and drums to the spectators. “Rick Youngblood and the Birdchoppers” will serve as host drums for the event.
Traditional traders and crafters will be on hand with authentic arts and crafts that illustrate the cultural heritage of the different tribes. A variety of demonstrations and children’s activities will be offered throughout the day and the public will be invited to join in the friendship dances in the arena..
The festival is sponsored by Embarq, Chick-fil-A, the City of Martinsville, Kiwanis International, Patrick Henry Community College, and The Pepsi Bottling Group.
Admission to the festival is $7 for adults, $6 for seniors and college students, and $5 for children and youth 3-18. Members and children under 3 are free. One admission cost gives visitors access to both the festival and the museum. In the event of rain, the festival will be held at the former Bassett-Walker Building at 405 Walker Road in Martinsville.

Oooh, I wish that I could be there! I know you will have a most awesome time! I so enjoyed the museum and the Jamestown display, I believe the Monancan tribe was there when we visited. Be sure and bring us back your stories.:)

We are looking forward to this weekend…and Ken has been busy making regalia for Austin (our grandson). He has wanted to go to a pow wow and has the makings of an energetic dancer. Only time will tell….

Just in case…thought I would bring this to the forefront. I am relying on Mapquest to get us there since I don’t know too much about Martinsville Downtown. Might have to call you, Bee….
It was a great day for a powwow. Weather was cool and clear. Becky and I got our grandson in the circle for several intertribals. The other dancers were very supportive…. many praised him and several gave him instructions on what dancing means to us and what his “clothes” mean. One favorite “uncle” of many children explained that when you are in your regalia, this is who you really are. We danced as proud grandparents today.

I must say that I was unsure how the pow wow would go from comments that I had heard from years’ past. But, I was pleasantly surprised. There were quite a few vendors, plenty of food, and the location was a middle school where I felt quite safe. We enjoyed good drumming, emceeing, and there was a big turnout. They did a snake dance, and some innovative storytelling….many intertribals, along with fancy dancing. The day just didn’t last long enough….will put that one on the calendar for next year.
And I echo Ken’s sentiments as well…it was good that Austin, who is only 5, decided that he wanted to dance with us. And as always, it’s good to be with friends like Beeleaf….who just make each day special. And I enjoyed having my son there as well….to see what it is that we enjoy so much about pow wows and dancing.
Wish we could have made it to the museum, but, they were closing as we were leaving, and the break wasn’t long enough to walk up there. We may have to make a special visit for that.
