Rockhound,
These are Ruffin family plantations. The Ridley’s are ancestors to many of the Ruffins but very very early in this country back in the 1600’s. By the way my ggg uncle Edmund Ruffin fired the first shot of the Civil War. He owned Marlborough Plantation. My second cousin couple times removed owns Evelynton Plantation today and another cousin owns Greenwood down in Louisiana. My ancestor William Ruffin moved his part of the family to North Carolina in the 1700’s all of these Ruffin’s descend from the Ridley’s. They moved into Northhampton County in NC and several of them married into my Smith’s who lived around the Nottoway and married into the Nottoway. My Branch family moved into this area as well..they were Nottoway too….I have a painting of one of my relations that was done in the 1700’s his name was William Ruffin Smith. He has the classic hook nose, high cheekbones and it appears dark hair but it’s a painting so…..we descend from Richard Smith of what is now considered Southampton County Virginia.

October 18, 2005 at 7:41 pm #19137I gotcha. So your Ridley’s were in NC.
I have found a possible clue concerning Moses Riddle in Hanover Co, VA, but I can’t find any validated source thus far.

I have ancestors of alleged “Cherokee” Indian ancestry from Hanover county VA (I believe they were probably Powhatan), and in researching that I have gotten ahold of copies of Hanover county tax lists, wills, deeds, etc, going back to the 1700’s. I don’t recall seeing the Riddle name in the records, but I am going through these records again, and will keep an eye out for any Riddles if you would like.
Shad
Shad,
Have you looked into this?
October 18, 2005 at 7:41 pm #22723I’m researching my Indian Butler family from Hanover county, so when I checked my files for Riddle info, I realized I had only copied pages that mentioned my Butler and some related families, none of which are Riddle that I know of. And I forgot to copy the index pages, so if there are any Riddle names in my files, they are buried deep.
The pages I have from the tax lists in the late 1700’s, and Hanover county wills and deeds don’t have any Riddles.
Next time I visit my cousins in Salt Lake I hope to visit the geneology library there, and copy the index pages, so I’ll keep an eye out for the Riddle name. I am descent from the Orange county Riddle/Riddells, so it would be interesting to see if any of them ended up in Hanover.
October 18, 2005 at 7:41 pm #22729You do realize that the Butlers may be related to the Riddles, right?
I am trying to see if I can find any more correlations than what I already have…
Look here in this thread: http://www.saponitown.com/forum/showthread.php?t=2268&highlight=caleb+butler
Are you referring to Orange County Virginia or North Carolina?
October 18, 2005 at 7:41 pm #22822No, I didn’t realize they may be related until I saw the postings here, I hadn’t researched them that much. I’ll have to add the Riddle name to my list of names that I’m researching in hanover. My Riddell/Riddle family dates back to Orange county Virginia in around 1700, they later went to Boone county KY, Missouri, back to KY, then east TN.
October 18, 2005 at 7:41 pm #22864Care to share what you have on the “Indian Butler” family you speak of?
Any connections so far to the info I have posted about the Butlers, Drinkwaters, or Wingos?
October 18, 2005 at 7:41 pm #23707Hi Rockhound, excuse the delay answering, my computer was down for a while, and I had missed your question. The descendants of my Butler lineage identifies as part Indian. Oteria Butler, born in Hanover county VA in the late 1830’s give or take, claimed she was part Indian and passed this information to her son (my gg grandfather, Samuel Cooke Smith) and to her daughter-in-law, and also to her grandkids. I heard this from several of Oteria’s grandkids when I was little, and also from my grandma and cousins. All of the descendents of Sam Cooke Smith as far as I know have identified as part Indian from the Butler lineage.
Most of my research on this lineage has focused on my Thacker family that married into the Butlers in the late 1700’s. I have seen the name Drinkwater before, but that was before I started keeping records. I’m still new to geneolgy research.
A distant Butler cousin contacted me a while back, mentioned that they too had an Indian identity in the family, but hasn’t found anything yet. Anyways, several descendents of Oteria took one of those DNA tests a while back looking for Indian DNA and found it, but whether that’s from Oteria’s lineage or other families with Indian ancestry that married in, I don’t know. Your postings on the Butlers have given me new leads and I will look into it.

No problem.
Hanover County sounds to be about the right area…maybe there’s a link.
Let me know what you find, please!
