Hello. This is my first posting and I would like to say that I have visited a number of times and I can that you are a great group of people and I am looking forward to making friends with you all. I would like to tell you a little about myself. I am a descendant of Meredith Collins. I have learned a lot about him from my distant cousin Brenda Collins Dillon. I have an Ancestor who’s name was Ailcy Frazee. She married my 5th great grandfather Reuben George. He wrote in his family bible that she was full blooded tuckahoe indian from the Souix tribe of Virginia. The letters ( SP) were written along side. Which could have meant Saponi. I’m thinking this because as far as I know tha Saponi are the only one with these letters. If anyone has any information on the tuckahoe indians and would like to share with me I would be very thankful.
December 20, 2004 at 9:12 pm #12369Wvam, welcome to our forum. Pull up a chair and stay awhile.
Interesting, you know, the name Vaughan comes up in this connection, and so does the name George. Frazee sounds new to me, though I’m trying to think what it sounds like.
We’ve had past conversations on the meaning of the “Tuckahoe” ID that’s found in some families. You can use the search feature in the upper right corner to pull them up. I’ve always thought it may be a corruption of the word “Tutelo.” I’ve seen a few other English corruptions of the word to make me think the actual second consonant was gutteral, meaning an English speaker could either simplify it as a ‘t’ or a ‘k’ sound. Also, I wonder if the ‘l’ was more like an ‘r.’
What year were these people writing this in that Bible?

Good to meet ya. Your cousin Brenda is one of the most knowledgeable people here.
You mention Tuckahoe. Altho I can not tie my Richey ancestors to the ones I am about to talk about, I want to mention this anyhow. I was once sent an old newspaper article by a descendant of a “Ritchey” in Kentucky. That article called this 19th century Ritchey a “Tuckahoe from Virginia”. I looked in a pretty old dictionary and it said a Tuckahoe was an early day “poor Virginian”, paraphrasing. We may be related to him, but I have never seen any genealogical proof of it. It was also an edible tubor.
Linda, that is interesting, about “Tutelo” and “Tuckaho”. Isn’t “Tutelo” also spelled “Tutero” on occasion? I can see that as a possibility. Three syllables, same relative vowell sounds, dealing with an written language unfarmiliar to the English . . .
Again, good to meet ya.

December 20, 2004 at 9:12 pm #12395Thank you everyone! You make me feel right at home. I’ll give you a little more information about Ailcy frazee. She was born in stoney hill, New Jersey in 1755. Stoney hill is a present day Borough of Kenilworth in Union county. I gather from what was written in the George family Bible that her family had moved there from Virginia. Reuben George was born in 1749 in Culpper, Virginia and was raised in New jersey. They moved to Pendelton co. West Virginia which was Virginia then in the early 1800’s. ailcy died july 1821 and Reuben died july 1832. I’m not sure when he wrote about ailcy. I went to pendleton co. last week and read reuben George’s pention application for when he fought in the American Revolution. It was dated august 1,1820. He mentioned ailcy in the application and said that she was about 66 years old and very infirm. I’m wandering if anyone knows of Souian Indians living in New Jersey? I know that they lived in Pennsilvania for awhile. So they could have been in New Jersey also. I have an ancestor that I’m trying to find some information on. His name was Joshua m. Harlow. He was born in Albermale Virginia around 1840 and around 1900 moved to Mcalester, Oklahoma. Which I read was Indian territory at the time. I’m wondering if Harlow could be an Indian name. He was on my mothers side of the family and I have been told that I have Native ancestors on my mothers side also. So, Joshua could be the one. I’ll just keep following his trail and see what I can find. I hope you all have a great day and I’ll be back tommorrow.
December 20, 2004 at 9:12 pm #12400Vance,
If anyone knows about Sioux being in Jersey, it’d be Brenda, Linda, you or Bill!:)
December 20, 2004 at 9:12 pm #12407Lynella, I don’t think they were meaning the “Sioux” tribe. I think those folks speak of the eastern Siouan is referring to the language that these smaller tribes along the eastern coast spoke not the tribe.
We do know that many of these smaller tribes emerged together for protection and many of them did migerate north so it would not be impossible for any number of different Indians to end up in New Jersey area.

December 20, 2004 at 9:12 pm #12411If anyone needs help with ancestors from Greenbrier county,West Virginia let me know and I’ll try and find some information on them.
December 20, 2004 at 9:12 pm #12413Brenda,
Ah, the language!:) Well, you’ll have that with me, huh!:) I’m sure they all got around, as people do! Thank you sweety and Merry Christmas to you and your’s!:) Love & Light, Lynella.
December 20, 2004 at 9:12 pm #12419I have a cousin in McAlister. It’s in SE Ok, near the old borders of the Choctaw and Chickasaw. I do believe Harlow might be a name on the rolls, but I don’t have access to my material (I’m at the library).
As for Culpepper County, that is not far from where 40 or so Saponi started a fire and stole some pigs about the 1740s I think it was. Again this is from memory and I don’t have access to any notes so it might be off.
My ancestor Nevil Wayland Sr was born about 1754 and we are not sure where. But after the Revolutionary was he was near Spartansburg SC, and on a website for that county in Scit says many peopel who settled in that region after the revolutionary War came there from Culpepper County, Va. So Nevil Sr (1754-1807) “might have” been born near that same area. Nearby was Gov. Spotswood’s lands where he had Saponi hired hands, and also the Germanna Settlement (I believe it was a neighboring county, Orange comes to mind) is nearby. At this Germanna settlement there were Waylands, so I think mine might have come from near that region also. These were Germans brought by Gov Spotswood to this region who were miners. Since the Saponi were also brought there by Gov Spotswood, the Saponi and the Germanna settlers probably knew each other.
One more point, I have heard that George surname somewhere — were they Catawba? I think so. Again, others can correct me here and please do. 🙂

December 20, 2004 at 9:12 pm #12422wvaram,
Do you know Joshua Harlow’s wife, and any of his children’s names, to help identify the right one?
Bill
December 20, 2004 at 9:12 pm #12427The wife of Joshua Harlow was Henreitta Larkins. She was born around 1840 in shenandoah co. Virginia. She married Joshua M. Harlow in 1858 in Shanendoah co. Virginia. Joshua M. Harlow died in 1906. Henerietta died in 1913. I believe in Oklahoma. I know Joshua died there. They were the grandparents of my grandfather Waid. The daughter of joshua M. harlow and Henrietta Larkins was Virginia S. harlow born 1870 in Bath County Virginia. She died 4-26-1959 in west virginia. She was the mother of my grandfather Waid. I’m not sure about her brothers and sisters. I well ask a family member about them. I think there names were Wilfred L. Harlow, wilber, nancy, texie, mattie and Elizabeth. These names I got of a web sit and haven’t asked my older family members about them yet. But I believe they are correct. I’ll do that today. I also noticed the last name Rogers here. I am searching my Roger ancestors in greenbrier county. They have lived in greenbrier county for many years. I have traced back to a chesley Rogers in greenbrier county back to the 1780’s and believe that he lived here long before that because in 1785 he had a titheable then which could have been a son around 16 at the time. He has been hard to trace but I am making progress slow but sure. Other roger family names around the late 1700’s and early 1800’s that I think are related are james, john, achilles etc. If anyone may be related to any of these Rogers then let me know and I’ll see what I can find for you.
December 20, 2004 at 9:12 pm #12428Vance, I am not sure about the George name. I have read that they were of German descent and married into the souian people. Someone had entered that my Reuben had been married twice. Once to a Mildred rogers and then later to my ancestor alice Frazee or as some spell it Fracy. The Reuben George that married Mildred rogers was born in 1740 and was of english ancestory. My Reuben was born 1749 and supposidly of German descent. Reuben”s grandson Walter George married Jane Collins the grandaughter of Meredith Collins. They were my 3rd great grandparents and that is how the George’s and the collin’s connected and from where I descend. I enjoy finding Native ancestor’s. I am very proud to have Native blood running in my veins. I hope to find more and let my children and grandchildren know who there ancestors were and pass this knowledge on for many generations. Talk to you later and have a good day.
December 20, 2004 at 9:12 pm #12432Howdy Wvaram,
I just did a goodle search for George Catawba Indains genealogy. it came up with 934 “hits”.
Some of these “hits” are the given name George, some are King George, but some are the surname “George”. It was and still is a prominent Catawba surname. Perhaps you cna find a common ancestor with them, but I don’t know.
If you use the search criteria — George Catawba Indains — you come to George used as a surname more quickly, but I believe there were more than 12,000 hits.
