My name is Leamond Anthony Allen. My
father was Leamond Onnie Allen and
Vacrious Pettiford Allen was my mother.
His father was John Allen and his mother
was Lourinda Allen. My mother’s father was
David “Bud” Pettiford and her mother was
Geneva Hedgepeth Pettiford. There is a
family lore that we are of Haliwa/Saponi
heritage. Does this lore ring any bells
in anyones memory.

September 18, 2002 at 11:06 pm #6229I know of the Hedgepeth family name. I have family members who are Hedgepeths. Some are linked to Haliwa Saponi and some are not. My family is linked to Haliwa Saponi through the Richardson, Lynch, Mills, and Silvers. My mother is a Richardson. These families have been in Halifax for over 150 years. In the case of the Richardsons, and Hedgepeths over 200 years. I believe the Hedgepeths came from Granville and Wake Counties. The Richardsons are from Edgecombe and Halifax Counties. Here are a couple of links for you. Good luck in your search. http://www.haliwa-saponitribe.com/ http://www.freeafricanamericans.com/
September 18, 2002 at 11:06 pm #6230On the list I have, the name Allen is associated with Saponi, Creek and Tuscarora families. Hedgepeth is listed as a name associated with SE native families, no tribe specified.
Are your mother and father distantly related? You all are kind of sounding like a typical isolate family of the south. The Haliwa might have criteria involving staying physically in the community, etc. or whatever, that would mean you wouldn’t be on their rolls, but for your part, I wouldn’t blame you for believing what’s been said in your family, certainly if it’s been said for a long time, before it became fashionable to have native ancestry.
Welcome to both of you to the board. Thanks for your info, Howard.
September 18, 2002 at 11:06 pm #16980Hi Leamond:
If you are related to the Pulley family from Spring Hope, then we are distant cousins. My family consists of (maternal) Richardson, Sills, and Blackmons; (paternal) Cordell, Hedgepeth, and Mills.
I have lots of cousins in “Pulley town” in Spring Hope–named for an area that has several Pulley families (e.g., Peggy, Lisa, Pete, and Angie Pulley are a few of my cousins).
The Hedgepeths in my family grew up in Hollister, NC…along with many Richardsons, Mills, and Sills–but most of my family are now residing in Spring Hope, NC.
From what I hear, “Haliwa” represents an area encompassing Hollister and Warren County (i.e., Haliwa-Saponi).
Since you are from Spring Hope (close to Rocky Mount), I hope that you have visited Hollister, NC and enjoyed the Powwow celebrated each year in April. It’s a great opportunity to meet and greet many wonderful people who have lots of information–they may be able to give you some information regarding your family names.
If you get information that the rolls are closed, don’t be discourage…know that you don’t need a signature on a piece of paper to know who and what you are. Please take the time to find out about your family heritage and share it proudly with your family.
Good Luck,
Alisha Cordell
September 18, 2002 at 11:06 pm #17126Leamon, I sent you an email on Roots (I think). My family the Finch family is from Nash and Wilson Counites. They lived in Middlesex, (Nash). I understand my great-grandfather was Indian, I am not sure, but I think an older cousin told me Cherokee. My Barnes family from Wilson is also Cherokee as told by my 87 year old uncle. However, the Finches were darker than the Barnes (smile). Have you heard of the Finche’s from Nash County? Also, I am related to the Wiggins/Pully/Richardson’s. Can you help? Thanks. Getting back to the Haliwa’s, I’ve been thinking that that’s what my grandfather was. It’s hard to tell. I know that he was an Indian slave…just not sure of a lot of things.
September 18, 2002 at 11:06 pm #17352Now we are getting close to home 🙂 My grandmother grew up in Nash County and lived in Edgecombe after she married. My grandfather was a policeman in Pinetops. Anyway my grandmother was Nottoway/Saponi. Do any of you have any of the following surnames in your lines: Etheridge, Pridgen, Moore, Wynne, Price, Robbins, Sessums, Horn, Batchelor, Manning, Smith, Blow, Branch, Taylor, Thrower, Malone, Hodges…we have two Wynne lines and have thought two Etheridge lines but now it looks likes that may have been Etherage instead of Etheridge although it’s so close is could very well be the same family

September 18, 2002 at 11:06 pm #17356Hi There, saw your post. I am also related to some of the Smith’s of Nash County and the Pulley’s via the Wiggins line. Barnes and Richardson on mother;s side. What was your grandmother’s name? Thanks, just trying to learn more.
September 18, 2002 at 11:06 pm #17358My grandmother was Katie Pridgen. Her mother was Nancy Moore and her mother was Mary Etheridge and her mother was Lurana Etheridge and her mother was Rebecca Taylor and her mother was Mary Teagle. It was the Moore line that married Nottoway and the Etheridge line we believe had both Saponi and Nottoway …..but it was the Throwers who we believe brought the Saponi into our lines. The Throwers married our Etheridges.

September 18, 2002 at 11:06 pm #24073This is my first time on this forum and i am escatic that i have located a wonderful website. I am marcia richardson from Castalia NC,Red Oak and Nash county. Until recently i had no idea of my family tree. After much research I think my father Sidney Rudolph RIchardson was a member of the Haliwa-Saponi tribe. My mother was Lucy Lee Hilliard RIchardson. Are these names familiar to anyone ….i am lost, want and need to find out about who i am .
September 18, 2002 at 11:06 pm #24074Welcome, Marcia. Why don’t you put together what you know about your family, names, dates, locations, for as far back as you can gather and post that information to the ‘Share Genealogy” section of this forum?

Leamond,
I agree with what Alisha said. You don’t need a signature or a tribal card to say who you are. Attend the annual Haliwa-Saponi Pow Wow in April and any of the mini Pow Wows we have. I have spent a lot of time getting to know my Haliwa-Saponi side since I moved back to Warren Co. I really enjoy being with them. I am a member of the Cheroenhaka “Nottoway” Tribe which is the other side of my family, but not being on the Haliwa Saponi tribal roles has not resulted in my being treated any less a part of them than if I was a tribal member. They are good people and you will find you will be proud that your lineage is from there as well. My Harris’s are from Hollister.
