I got the following message today:
I am a Reference Librarian with a patron in need of a dissertation about the Saponi Indians and the Melungeons. It is by Richard Carlson. Our patron claims it is becoming very influential in the field.
Could you tell me if you are aware of such a paper and where I might find it?
Does anybody know any details about where this can be found? What university sponsored it?
October 8, 2003 at 11:30 pm #7932Linda,
I remember this article being discussed when I belonged to the Melungeon -L list at Rootsweb however I went back to archives and could not find the article. It is probably there among the millons of others. I did however, find Richard Carlson’s email address if that is helpful.

October 8, 2003 at 11:30 pm #7933Good job!
October 8, 2003 at 11:30 pm #7934He just wrote me back. It’s not him. He didn’t write it. The search continues. . .
October 8, 2003 at 11:30 pm #7937The librarian wrote me back. He tracked it all down
I did find the details. Rich Carlson of Lansing Michigan has written one that has material on the Saponi in it although they aren’t the main focus of his paper. He says it will not be available for a while since he has yet to receive his own “paper copy” yet. Once it is ready it can be Interlibrary Loaned from the holders at any public library that offers dissertation ILL service.
October 8, 2003 at 11:30 pm #7939Linda:
Its abstract might be available in Dissertation Abstracts right now. Seems that the bound copy of mine was a long time in being shelved at Iowa but that the abstract was out first, if this would be of help.
I tried looking in my online library at my university, but I don’t have access yet to this database, and I am not on campus till Monday or Tuesday.

October 8, 2003 at 11:30 pm #26031Just was looking around the forum and found this thread. I have found some information….
INDIAN/MELUNGEON ABSTRACTS
Compiled by: Richard Allen Carlson, Jr., Lansing, MI
The following abstracts are from four calendars of documents compiled for a dissertation tentatively entitled “Who Are Your People: Indian-Pioneer Histories From The Southern Appalachians And Related Tribes, Bands, And Families, 1660 To 1997” (Department Of Anthropology, Michigan State University). The calendars are titled: “Eastern KY Pioneer-Indian 1740 To The Present”; “Cherokee Diaspora 1740 To The Present”; “Southern Tribes: Saponi, Tutalo, Sara, etc. 1600 To The Present”; and “Melungeon Dialogue 1730 To The Present”.
Hancock County Times; [HCT & IPI. April 17, 1903. Article by the Hon. Lewis N. Jarvis (lawyer of Sneedville, b. in Scott Co. VA 1829).
States “all that has been written on Melungeons is erroneous, and are derisively dubbed “Melungeons” by locals. States they were not here when Boone entered country in 1761; doings of the long hunters; Greasy Rock a rendezvous point for traders in Sneedville, Greasy Rock first settled by Melungeons and Newman’s Ridge then Blackwater later. In 1795 or 1804, those called Melungeons settled area with land grants and muniments of title and settled same time as the whites did. Names were Vardy, Ben, & Solomon Collins, Shepherd Gibson, Paul Bunch and the Goodmans, chiefs and the rest of them.” They had already lost their language and spoke English very well. They were originally friendly Indians who came with the whites from the Cumberland County and New River, VA. Some stopped on Stoney Creek, Scott County VA and other points along the Blue Ridge. The white emigrants with the friendly Indians erected a fort on the bank of the river. Ft. Blackmore, and here yet many of these friendly ‘Indians’ lived in the Mountains of Stoney Creek. A few half bloods may be found from here they came to Newman’s Ridge and Blackwater amalgamation with whites; half-bloods, quarter-bloods, & the “old pure bloods”; some in War of 1812: James Collins, John & Mike Bowlin, and “some others not remembered”, those who quite full blooded. Were like white people, good & bad citizens, some among best property owners in county, ‘word is bond, “they have left records which show these facts.”

October 8, 2003 at 11:30 pm #26035So Shirley,
Do you know if the dissertation is free if you access it from a subscribing institution? The university here belongs to many services. By the way, I’ve reallly appreciated all of the sites and links you’ve been posting recently. They are very useful to me. I just have not had time to get into them yet.
Dianne 🙂

Wachinika,
There are a few colleges that have it available, such as the university of Michigan. As for online access, of that I am unsure.
Blondeyelaurie has a digital copy, I think she said she would be willing to do look ups. The dissertation is a valuable tool for those with melungeon ancestors and families connected to them. Some names referenced are Cole, Gibson, Collins, Perkins, Mullins, Sizemore, Nichols (various sp.), and many others.
I am glad the links were helpful.

Mystic,
Thanks for posting Dr. Carlson’s address. I have some questions that he may be able to shed some light on.
