I found a website posted by NC Archives that lists ‘land grants ‘ to settlers.
It is called the: Town Fork land grants (Granville). NC. It’s posted by a Stanley whose ancestor on the site was a Stanley. Also a Bowles received land. One of Sequoyah’s wives was a Rebecca Bowles and she is referred to as an ‘old settler’ Their ages would probably make her his granddaughter.
Christopher and Nathaniel Gist were listed on a not too long a list.
It mentions in each ‘box’ that Christopher Gist was married to a Sarah Howard and Nathaniel was his brother ( both born c. 1705 – 1707).
was married to her sister, Mary Howard.
I found a Gist family website and after checking back and forth discovered that Richard Gist who was born in England, was the father of different children: Two of them: Christopher (died 1759) married Sarah Howard and Nathaniel who married Mary Howard who were daughters of a Joshua Howard,VA. Christopher’s son: Nathaniel was the one that traveled to NC and had a long association with two Chiefs who were Mut-teh’s uncles. (Sequoyah’s Mother).
(He also, had a later marriage with a Judy Cary Bell.
Cary- her mother’s maiden name)
I left my notes home but, I also learneed that apparently another sister, Violetta Howard married someone — Indian ancestors descendents.

My daughter has been having a problem with researching her paternal grandmother’s side. They are from NY/NJ. She has tested 17% NA on DNA tests.
She believes it’s Plains Indians. Some research she came up with on the Web says that some of Wild Bill Cody’s Showmen were famous and some bought homes and lived in Hamilton Township. I discovered the Indian School at Carlisle, PA ( Jim Thorpe) had children from Eastern and Western areas.
She also had more DNA tests and did a ‘diaspora’ type test that I find mind boggling. It goes back she says 155,000 yrs. all over the globe.
Alot of Portugese and Madagascar comes up. My mother descends from 2,000
years of English, Scand, FR, Sp, Germ, ancestry to Roumania, Russia, Greece, Turkey and Arabia.
I did some research on the Spanish royal line and discovered that practically
all Americans that have Royal blood can trace to Alfonso 6th ( VI) of Castile and Leon. Those families married Portugese royalty and were descended from Mohammed’s daughter , Fatima. Another ‘shocker’ I got was when I found I descended from 3 of his 6 wives: Constance of Burgundy #3, and Zaida (whose Christian conversion name was Isabel) and Xemenia (Jeminia).wose descended from a Caliph of Cordoba who married a Spanish royal Oneca Fortunez. Zaida’s father was the Emir of Seville. Fatima’s husband was a cousin of Mohammed’s. Those lines go back generations to 400AD. All Caliphs of Baghdad, Damascus, Syria.
Some Fosters married Taylors ( not my direct line as far as I know) but a woman in SC baought a Tayor Family Bible at an estate auction and her name was Wyatt. This Taylor group SC was related to Barneycastle.
Out of curiosity I went on the web to see what I could find under it.
A woman had old stories handed down in her family that Taylors were being born for generations “dark skinned” and said the information handed down was that they descended from Turks, Portugese, and or Gypsies.
My daughter came home and told me that on an entire island off Madagascar was owned and controlled in the early 1730’s by a Pirate named Taylor. The Dutch and French/British were in that area alot.
That would make sense why there are Taylors in SC. Charleston was an important seaport and Pirartes were abundant there.
My daughter has also come across information that alot of Europeans today are testing as being part American Indian. 11-14%. She said that the Indian Showmen in Cody’s Show were very famous and popular in NY, NJ and Europe.

One family tree mystery I’m trying to find is a great g-g-grandmother Sarah nee (Dowell) Howard who married. Morgan Gene Howard in Rowan, NC 1856.
There is a Sarah Dowell who married an Abraham Hawkins in 1798 and I was wondering if she had a previous marriage or if that is another krelative and I don’t know her parents names.
Also, my g-g-g-g-grandmother, Rachel married Christopher Howard of Rowan. Everyone in my family is searching for her parents names. He was born c. 1743-44 VA and his father arrived about 1758 in Rowan. She c. 1740-50?
Christopher’s Daughter, Rachel is listed in his will, ( Will Book ‘G’ )
August 1815 and her son Philip Howard.
Apparently she was not married at this birth. I found one lady’s web information that Rachel ( the wife of Christopher had been married before to another Howard who died and then she married Christopher but, I don’t think that is correct.)
My two mysteries are: (Mrs) Rachels and grandson, Philip’s parentage.
I have been doing alot of research in Chatham and Orange counties. Quaker Settlements and Howards, Goins, Hawkins, Adams, Wrights, Allens.etc lived there. 1740’s. Gist had a farm on the Yadkin River.

I’ve been wanting to respond to your thread here but after a few days I’m more confused with Howard lines etc. I believe that the Howard family of Md and Va and then into Granville co NC probably connect. I get so sidetracked looking it’s pathetic.
Anyways, there is a William Howard married to a Sarah Hawkins with sons Henry Groves Howard born 5 Nov 1733 and Francis Howard both married to Allen girls, Ann Eleanor and Francis and Hannah Allen and Henry Groves. Howard brothers married to Allen sisters. The father of these Allen girls is a brother to my direct Allen ancestor. Then it gets so complicated with the Allen and Hunts and Hunts and Howard families, etc. But born in Granville co NC just to Hannah and Henry Groves Howard are,
Sarah, 2 Dec 1761 married to Samuel Hunt
Littleton 18 Feb 1767 married to Patsy Thorp
Barnett 4 Nov 1768 married to Jane Hunt
Allen Howard and Phoebe Marshall…left out Mark Howard md Rachael Webb. &
January 29, 2007 at 8:19 pm #24600Just typed a whole other section here that didn’t show up..
Frances Howard and James Cozart.
Ellinor “Nelly” Howard and John Owen.
Polly (Mary) and Hubbard Cozart.
Broadie Howard married Nancy Slade Howard, a daughter of the Francis Howard and Ann Allen marr.
Lucy and Edward Hunt, Margaret and John Webb Jr.
and Isabella Howard and Bennett Hester.
Armelia Howard and Robert Allen. They are in the Yellow Bank, Ohio river Ky area. I saw this and thought, Yellow Bank? It is the area named for the yellow color of soil, by Owensboro Ky. Daviess co Ky.
So I found Littleton at age 83 in the 1850 census of Daviess co with other Howard family members and Sanford Tanner next door with a Sanford Tucker in the household and Tucker family next door. Was surprised to see Tanner next door (another surname of mine). There was a Tanner Fort in Boone co Ky or Tanner Station. These Tuckers go to John Tucker born C1759 Va and

January 29, 2007 at 8:19 pm #24603Dorothy,
Can you share the website address?
Are there any Riddles or Ridleys listed?
According to Pat Elder, Moses Riddle lived near a Goins and Ned Sizemore in Granville Co, NC.
January 29, 2007 at 8:19 pm #24606Where would/ how would one go about getting a matrilinial (SP?) DNA done to find percentage of Native American ancestry? Dorothy in Florida
Blevins-Blankenship-Garland-Fry(e)-Hughes-Honeycutt-Stout-Stovall-
Ledford-McCurry-Troutman-Ledford-Campbell-Street-McKinney-Rose-Pettit
all of these European ancestors arrived late 1600s – mid 1700s in Virginia
January 29, 2007 at 8:19 pm #24607The matrilineal DNA would have to be the mitochondrial DNA. Everyone has an exact copy of their mother’s mitochondrial DNA.
January 29, 2007 at 8:19 pm #24609Dorothy,
To show NA, the matrilineal line would have to be originally NA and unbroken by any male ancestors. FamilytreeDNA will perform this. As Rockhound says, it is called mtDNA. It does not tell you the percentage but rather tells you the likely location of the origin of that original female. My ggrandfather breaks the matrilineal line for me. The only test then, is a test that is considered controversial. It is the AncestrybyDNA test, available from that company and others like genetree where I got mine. This tells you an estimate of the amount of NA you have.

Hi! Henry Groves Howard might be ‘Graves’ . They lived next door to my grandparents (Howard) in Mocksville, NC. The Graves were one of the earliest settlers in NC. Worth Rays’s book, Lost Tribes of NC, Where did they come from, where did they go? Is a compilation of names, and it includes old place names and maps and mentions rivers and Indian settlements. It is a reference book in some libraries. I got a copy of Prof. McNeely’s Howard ancestry chart. It traces all Matthew Howard’s and Ann Hall’s descndents from MD and VA to NC. It’s on file at the Rowan Genealogy Room. He is listed as a Prof of Chemistry at Univ.of Chattanooga, TN. I’ve been adding more to it for my own references. A woman descended from ‘Nelly’ – Walker Howard’s wife, was trying to find her ancestor. (She’s a Wall in Texas. I found a Josephine and a Flossie Mae Wall Ages, 19 and 1 on the Miller Roll. I Think she’s related to Mt.James ? Wall , Davie, Library.) I’m going to look up your names on my copy . Awhile back , I wrote down all the names married into
the Howards. There was so much of marrying cousins and Brothers and sisters of one familly marrying brothers and sisters of another family. Also, they had the boring habit of naming sons after brothers, etc. One of my family lines did this so much I gave it up.
One thing I do is type in a surname and first , if I know it, and see what comes up onthe websites. That’s a good way to check family trees and
cross reference and get more information. It helps me alot. There are alot of websites that are companies that charge , so you get to know right away whenthey ‘pop up’. I get out ofthemand keep looking for private family sites and sometimes they have family Bibles.
One time I found a 3 page pamphlet on an interview with a Miller family. The article was probably taken in 1960’s . There was a photograph of them and they told the researcher that they descended from a Carl Miller -in think?
There was this history of his 3 wives. The last one was a Clementine Howard.
There was this old photograph of her in a high white hat like women wore on wagontrains. She lived through the Civil War and outlived him. They told about her life and mentioned that a couple Howard cousins died during a smallpox epidemic. The Professor had blanks for a couple of cousins on that line and the time period fit. There were no cemetery records for them because they were driven down to the river on a flatbed wagon and buried along the riverbank. So, we sent this photo and info to the Prof.
Sorry I was late with my reply. I’ll see what I can find. I’ve seen Sanford and Owen websites.

January 29, 2007 at 8:19 pm #24995Dorothy,
Thanks for the response. This family is confusing with all of the cousins intermarrying etc.!
I noticed a couple Clementine Howards in the line of Barnette Howard and also, I think a Bowden/Howard marriage. I really need to see a copy of Worth Ray’s book. Will need to make a special trip for that one.
Yes, anything you find will be greatly appreciated. My research often goes in too many directions at once and I get soooo very sidetracked.
Thanks again. Sue J
January 29, 2007 at 8:19 pm #25043I checked my pages and found she was named:
Sarah Clementine Howard Call -husband I believe was Carl.
I also found a Cornelius Littleton Howard –The only Littleton. It wasn’t Patsy Thorp. Maybe he had son or grandson who married her. Manytimes people use their middle names completely or another name. My grandfather had a brother named Daniel but he was known as David (no reason). I also descendfroma Mary Thorpe who married a Harris: Isle of Wight Marriages 1600’s.

My Paternal Grandmother, Ivy Mathilde Logan, is from Rockland Farm, Butler, Jefferson County,PA and Allegheny Co, areas. since 1778 ( Family names are: Logan, Harper, Hazlett, Campbell, Strome, Penney) The Campbell-Harpers, Hazletts were from Allegheny, Tioga areas lived on Beecher’s Island
later renamed – Nelson Island. I’ve been researching back and forth and I’m not that computer savy so sometimes I lose messages and put them in the wrong place. Also, while researching Hazlett I found a Nancy Hazlett whose mother was a Shawnee and a website for searching Blackfoot origins of Hazlett also spelled Hazlette, Haslett. My Hazlett has as far as I know no Indian origins. I traced Hazlett, Harper , Logan, to Tipperrary,Dublin, Ireland. My mother told me my father told her there was some Indian on his side but I can’t find it. We have every color eyes and hair in my family so that’s no clue either.

January 29, 2007 at 8:19 pm #25046Oh. I forgot! I found gobs of Fosters on the Dawes Roll.
There was an entry with the census done of a Sarah Soster that said she was “authenticated” by her neighbors named –Tucker. That census was in I think W. VA and I remember Cooweescoowee ,Clifton District #156.There was a George Giles Foster. very old born in W. VA. I later found in Davie County, NC (part of Rowan Co. NC ) on the Taylor Bible Records on file in Rowan Library: George Foster, Giles Foster and births marriages, deaths. I think these fosters are family memers of George Giles Foster. Anyway, the Tuckers were associated with them. My great -great grandfather, Philip Howard is lilsted on George Foster “Big Bill’s ” General Store list. early 1800’s to 1840’s .
January 29, 2007 at 8:19 pm #25049What is your interest in Anthony Cozart 1779 Orange co,NC? He was in the part of Orange that eventually became Person. He is my direct line.
