I suspect you’re looking at a group of ‘separtist Baptist’.
The John and Thomas Howard on the 1779 Orange Co Tax List, may or may not be related to the Stephen Howard of 1755.
The Stephen Howard referred to by Dottie on the 1755 Orange Tax List, actually lived in that part of Orange Co., NC that later became Chatham Co.
He was part of a group who came from Opekon, Va and settled on Sandy Creek where they founded the separtist’s Baptist church at Deep River (now Chatham Co) in 1756.
This was a “traveling church” which also founded a church in the Broad River section of SC in 1759. Many of the original founders left Deep River after about 2 years and some eventually ended up in what became Monroe (then Barren) Co., Ky.

Rev. Jonathan Mulkey is credited – “History of the Baptist … ” with establishing the first Baptist church west of the Blue Ridge which is thought to be the ‘ancestor’ of the Jonesboro or Johnson Co., Tn Baptist church (members list in Goodspeed’s Tennessee History) and founded the church at Dandridge, Jefferson Co., Tn. Rev. Jonathan d. and left a Will in Washington Co., Tn, dated August 23, 1826, naming his wife and children living at that time).

I tried to look some for your Christopher and the connections of daughter Rachel . Not having a lot of luck. Maybe you should write like you said to the county. I’ll keep it all in mind if I run across anything. Sue J
Interested in the name CARRIE BELL, one of my great uncles, John Fry(e), adopted a native american baby named Carrie Bell during the 1800s. I am not sure of the exact date and have been unable to find out from where she came. The Frye family were in Unicoi and Carter County, Tennessee at this time. John worked for a railroad. later some of the family crossed the state line at Roan Mountain to settle in Yancey/Mitchell County, North Carolina. I was caught by the name Judy CARRIE BELL name associated with GIST and wondered if there ws a connection.
my previous post was in response to Dorothy McComb’s first post on thread New Research to Me…she mentioned Nathaniel Gist had married Judy Cary Bell. I wondered if there was any connection to the Native American baby, Cary/Carrie Bell my great uncle John Fry(e) had adopted. I need to look up a more certain time frame between the removal and the civil war. The region was Western North Carolina and East Tennessee.
