Native American genealogy research from the Piedmont of NC & VA
Can’t even pronounce it but can anybody tell me anything about this band?
Brenda
I’ve heard the word Monisicapanaugh used as the original word from which Saponi is a corruption. So I guess that word mean that “a band of Monisicpanaugh” is the same as saying “a band of Saponi.” I’m not sure if ANYBODY is sure about that though. Where did you see this?
In the article written by Jack Goins on my website. “Old Thomas Collins”. Jack refers to the Saponi’s as Monasukapanough.
for what its worth, the name Monasukapanough
is an algonquian word. Saponi are sioun, so it may come from an algonquian source. “apanough” is very characteristic of algonquian of VA, NC in pronunciation and text. I will try to get a transalation from Strachey or Smith.
