We had always thought that Viola was Cherokee, but a great-uncle of mine said that a “small tribe of Eastern Blackfoot” was in the area where Viola was from.
This is Viola’s mother, Elizabeth Mullins:

Thank you so much for any help!
November 14, 2005 at 1:33 am #17466The Mullins’s listed as Elizabeth’s line are suppose to be Melungeon’s located in or around Wise Co., VA and Newman Ridge, TN. My Mullins line is also ID as Melungeon, however our oral family history states Blackfoot Indian. I have to admit I had never heard of Saponi or Eastern Blackfoot until I happened upon this site several years ago. Certainly helped explain a lot about the family oral history of Cherokee for my Collins’s and Blackfoot for my Mullins’s. However the Melungeon theory bears consideration.
I also have Bollings in my line who are reported to go back to Pocahantas ………I have’t done much research on that line as I still have so much to do with my direct line. Lastly I also have Shortt’s in my line…….bet you and I are related!!!

November 14, 2005 at 1:33 am #17468Greetings
Mary Polly Roberts father was James Roberts Sr. who married
my aunt Nancy Damron.
Nancy Damron brother Lazarus Damron married Nancy Elizabeth
Short she was born circa 1788 Russell Co VA they were the
children of Moses Damron and Aggy Owl Damron.
November 14, 2005 at 1:33 am #17483Yes Nancy, we seem to be related several different ways :o) Thanks for the Melungeon info. I’ve read a few of those threads here. It will be interesting to research that. I’m really hoping to find my Native blood, something I’m very proud of.
Thank you also, Cowboy – we are distant relatives also it seems :o)
Blessings,

November 14, 2005 at 1:33 am #17497Thanks, All,
Wondered if ya’al’d chime in before I started asking Suzanne if the name Sherade (“Sherwood Sr”) or James Booker Mullins were familiar.
The posted trees on this particular line are self-contradictory and after working on their sources for most of the day, I haven’t been able to untangle it,,, either, but I’m going to give it a few more ‘trys’ before giving up.

(from this ROBERTS line)
November 14, 2005 at 1:33 am #17498Thanks, Bill! Those names are indeed familiar. I’ll dig a little further on these Mullins folks. I may have some census info for you from another site. Please don’t trouble yourself; there is no hurry 🙂 I’ll see what futher info, if any, that I have, and I’ll let you all know. Thanks a million!
Blessings,
Suzanne
November 14, 2005 at 1:33 am #17504Please see my other post regarding the Short(t)s, Mullinses, etc for more extensive info.
This page –
http://wc.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=PED&db=wardjay&id=I3084&style=TABLE
– has Elizabeth Mullins’ parents being first cousins to each other. Gosh I hope that’s not accurate LOL Other pages have Elizabeth’s mother’s maiden name as Alice Robinson. Very confusing.
Thanks and blessings,
Suzanne
November 14, 2005 at 1:33 am #17513That probably is correct…..my G Grandparents Mullins’s were 1st cousins . Although family oral history states it did cause a rift between the two brothers and their families.
Family oral history of my Mullins line starts with Riley Mullins, b. 1822 Russell Co., VA and Elizabeth Ingles. They had several children including Washington, b.1842; Eliza,b.1845; Jane,b.1847; and William R. “Bill” , b. 1848/49 all in Russell Co.,VA. others were Jane, Riley, Malinda, Olley and Henry.
Well, Washington marries Melinda/Malinda Hubbard in 1866 and William “Bill” R. marries Melinda Dean ( daughter of Ellis & Mineriva Dean) at some point. Washington & Malinda had 9 children that lived; Jane, Ellen, Steve, Jefferson (b.1868), George, Melvina, Laura, Elvira and Emma.
I have less info on William “Bill” children but one of them was Nancy also born around 1868.
Jefferson, son of Washington and Nancy ,daughter of William “Bill” married in 1892, Wise, VA. 1st cousins marrying. Lord help us!
These are my G Grandparents!
My Mullins’s settled at Bold Camp, VA and research leads me to believe that Riley’s father was Ambrose Mullins of Bold Camp, however I do not have documenation to prove that.
But here is where my biggest mystery begins ………….family oral history has always stated that my G Grandmother Nancy Mullins was full-blooded Blackfoot Indian!!! You explain that!!!! When asked about William “Bill” Mullins being the brother to Washington and Jeff not being full blood , we always got the same answer, she was full blood! Well, she certainly looked Indian, but that doesn’t make it so.
Unfortunantly because of the rift , there wasn’t much said while growing up about William ” Bill” and G Grandmother Nancy’s mother, Melinda. Bill , I believe fathered children by another women , but I have only discovered this via research, not family history.
Nancy Mullins actually raised my Mother, with Jeff off and on living with them. He turned out when older to be quite a drinker and difficult person and was not always living in the same household as my Mother and G Grandmother.
Quite a puzzle.
November 14, 2005 at 1:33 am #17514Oh, I forgot to ask . What part of FL are you located? I am in central FL about 15 miles south of Ocala.
Thanks,
Nancy
November 14, 2005 at 1:33 am #17526Thanks Nancy, for the colorful stories! I hope that indeed my g-g-g grandmother’s maiden name was indeed Robinson, not Mullins, therefore eliminating the inbreeding lol I’ve never seen anybody in the old photos who looked like the “Dueling Banjos” kid or anything …
I wonder if either one of us is related to Ira Mullins of the infamous “Pound Gap Massacre?”;)
I’m SW of you in the Tampa Bay area – born and raised in Ohio though 🙂
Blessings,
Suzanne
November 14, 2005 at 1:33 am #17550Suzanne,
Maybe you some backup documentation which answers some of these questions.
The gen-chart link you posted above, shows Elizabeth Mullins’ mother as Mary Alice Mullins and Mary Alice’s parents as David Mullins and Virginia Short. On the 1850 census, David and Virginia Mullins do not have a daughter named Mary or Alice or Polly, nor any daughter born anywhere near the same time frame as Mary Alice.
The info you also posted as Mary Alice’s parents being Thomas P. Mullins and Nancy Mullins poses a question.
Thomas, b. 1800 Franklin Co., Va (brother of Sherwood, b.1793) and Nancy, b.1810 Ky, on the 1850 Russell Co., Va census, does have a daughter “Polly”, but she is 21 yrs old in 1850, making her born abt. 1829.
There’s also the question of where Thomas and Nancy were married. Per several gen-trees, it was 30 Dec 1826 in Franklin Co., Va, but Nancy would have been only 16 yrs old and was a resident of Floyd Co., Ky, where she would have by law had to be married. Yes, a legal document could have been obtained in Floyd County allowing her to be married in Franklin Co., Va, but I think this is a ‘stretch’. “Everyone” lists Nancy as a Mullins, dau of Ambrose (Jr) and he does have a dau in that age range on the 1810 and 1820 Floyd Co. census, but I don’t see any info on how they arrived at their conclusion.
Bill
p.s….
Re: 1st cousin marriages. Study results published, I think early this year in Sweden, which followed over 15,000 first-cousin marriages and their subsequent children’s medical problems, showed NO link to any medical problems that were outside of what would be expected in the general population whose parents were not related.
So, we’re all “okay”.. 🙂
November 14, 2005 at 1:33 am #17561Bill, concerning your statement about 1st cousins……… Becky might not agree with you after meeting some of my Cox’s in Floyd co. VA.
>;-)
November 14, 2005 at 1:33 am #17566Maybe that’s what people meant when they said there was an exception to every rule?
=:-)
November 14, 2005 at 1:33 am #17572Hi Bill, and all,
You’re right, the URLs that list Alice Mullins’ father as David are wrong; her father was Thomas. Lots of those Ancestry.com pages are wrong; they sometimes even have the wrong Elizabeth Mullins married to David Shortt. I have, from a distant relative who seems to be very good with genealogy, the following statement:
“Kentucky Vital Statistics — marriages in Letcher Co. KY; Shows Alee Mullens and Henry Mullins married 2/9/1952 by Abram Cantrill” Note – Alice was incorrectly listed on the marriage records as the daughter of David.
This same relative’s info shows Alice (“Alee” or “Allis”) as b. May 13 1834 (headstone shows 1833) in Russell Co, VA, to Thomas P. “Lonesome Tom” Mullins, b. circa 1800, and Nancy (Mullins?) (Bowles?), b. circa 1810.
Below is some more info that I got from this relative, who spent several weeks in the Wise Co. area researching the family — so it’s accurate, to the best of her knowledge.
I think there are many exceptions to the “first cousins offspring being normal.” I knew some kids whose parents looked almost identical … the way this family kept their house and yard, the way the kids acted and looked … it was all quite ummm … “colorful” 😮
Thank you SO MUCH for all of this effort. I’ll continue to comb for accurate info.
Blessings,
Suzanne
The marriage register in Wise Co. VA shows:
David Short, age 52, widow, birth place not given, residing in Wise Co. VA, married on 30 July 1877 to Eliz. Mullins, 19, single, born Russell Co. VA, residing in Wise Co. VA, son of Chas. (Charles) and Anny Short, daughter of Henry and A. (Alice) Mullins. David’s occupation was farmer. They were married by Minister Wm. H. Bond.
Sherwood Mullins Sr and Mary “Polly” Roberts were the parents of Elizabeth’s father, Henry J. Mullins. Her mother’s parents were Thomas P. Mullins and Nancy (possibly a Bowles). Sherwood and Mary did have a daughter named Elizabeth (b. c1832) that married Elijah “Buncombe” Mullins.
I have a date of birth for Elizabeth that m. David Short as 21 Feb 1859 Russell Co. VA. She d. 6 Sept 1937 at the home of her daughter, Minnie (Short) Mays, in Wise Co. VA, and is buried at the Levi Cantrell Cemetery, Wise Co. VA.

Yes, sometimes we just have to go ‘courthouse digging’.
