November 19, 2002 at 4:49 pm #33234After reading forcum, I know that I am in the right place. I tried to find the P & Q. The libaray said the micro was too hard to read. Suggested I check out the State Libaray. John Austin Jr. 1755 is an ancestor. My grandmother was living on a catabawa reservation in 1890 in Oklahoma.
John Austin Sr. & Saponi Indian (Hanna Love ?)
John Austin Jr. Mary Maybee
Stephen Austin & Dorcas Pinson
Rebecca Austin & James Gray
Alexander Gray & Hanna Horton
Sarah Gray & Samuel Parks
Mary Parks & Daniel Lindsey
Ida Lindsey & Henry Baxter
Ellen Baxter & Earl Palmer
Me.
Family records show that Sarah Gray is half Indian. This a letter written to another family member. These families lived in a community, and moved from New York, Virginia, North Carolina, Tennesse, Arkansas, Texas, and Oklahoma. Other family member also speak of the Indian blood, that it was suppose to be a secret. Hanna Horton’s mother was Mary Watt’s who is suppose to be Indian and John Watts daughter from North Carolina. Which is why Sarah is considered 1/2 having blood on both sides. If anyone has a copy of the Pleas & Quarter from John Austin in 1755. It might help in proving the Indian Linage for the Saponi, since John is tied to the Catabaw Indians in the report, and his descendant Ida Lindsey ended up on the Catabaw Reservation in 1890. Sarah Parks also moved close to the Catabaw Reservation after grandmother Mary Watts died. I will check out the State Library , if anyone else has it please contact me at peacemakermj1@earthlink.net

November 19, 2002 at 4:49 pm #35166I am becoming desperate. I am hunting an Elizabeth or Eliza Jane Austin (b. 23 May 1836 – d. 28 Jan 1898) m. Michael Smythers 23 May 1856. She is throught to be the daughter of James Austin and Virginia Jane Bratton. James is said to be a son of a John Austin. All stops there. There is concensus that this James was born 1808 – ?06 Jul 1867. Ancestory.com trees then take him to a Isaiah Austin, but the James born to him his older. Worse, be shown on a 1850 Census in Illinois, dying in 1854 there. Anyone got an extra John Austin out there? Any of those siblings from John Austin Jr have daughter Eliza Jane or Elizabeth Austin around 1836 and not go to Illinois? My Eliza lived her live at Sulpher Springs, Carroll, VA.
November 19, 2002 at 4:49 pm #35212The word Saponi came to be used to describe all of the Siouan tribes of the VA/NC Piedmont. The Catawba were in SC and were from a Siouan stock that had been in the East MUCH longer than the Saponi. It’s thought that the Saponi had been in Ohio, were driven out, perhaps by the Seneca, and came into the Piedmont maybe 800 years ago. The Saponi went to the Catawba in the end days, but they didn’t get along and most left.
I don’t know what the original source is that describes an Austin as Saponi. I’ve probably heard it quoted, but I don’t know the details of where it’s located and the context of it. Was it in Orange County, VA? I may have heard that.
November 19, 2002 at 4:49 pm #35215Seems like it was a land record.

November 19, 2002 at 4:49 pm #35309The Austin Families Association recently put together a largish document that is now on the internet about the John Austin family. The first several pages discuss the Saponi, Catawba and Susquahana backgrounds.
