Does anyone have any Groves, Howards, Allens, Hillsman, Wilson, Putney, Gwin, Hamilton, Bethea, McCracken, Smith, Williams, Sams, Murrell and Brown.
Most if not all of these families had origins in the York, Orange, Granville, Loudoun, Hanover, Kanawha Co’s. Does anyone know about this Kanawha Co.?
I can break down any and all of these family lines if anyone is interested.

The only Kanawha County I am familiar with is in WV, my family is just North in Nicholas County.
As for your surnames, I think some of those sound like SAJ’s line, you may want to contact her.
I have Brown’s in VA that married into my Lacy’s. My aunts in WV both married Brown’s….however this is a pretty common name.

March 28, 2008 at 8:08 pm #30449Groves, Gwin, and Williams are familiar.
Elisha Collins of Patrick Co, VA (brother to my guy Ned) was md to Hannah Uptegroves. Some of the Uptegroves family later shortened their name to Groves. May or not be related to yours, just something to know.
Gwin can also be Guinn, and may be a form of Goin(s).
Williams seems to be a common name everywhere, huh?
Are you still referring to Orange County in NC or VA???
March 28, 2008 at 8:08 pm #30461My Smiths are from Hanover county Virginia, but Smiths are a dime a dozen.

Thought I had answered about the Cannons but can’t find it. My husband’s people are from NC, TN and FL and said to have Seminole blood somewhere in their Slaughter intermarried family. Clydene

Is that Henry Co., VA???
My Bowles/Bolling Family lived there. They moved to TN by 1811. Frances Bolling Bowles was a direct descendant of Pocahontas. They didn’t appear to have land in Henry Co., VA but John Bowles did acqauire land in DeKalb Co., TN. “Fanny” his wife was quite silent and her daughters took care to see her interests were kept by getting John’s land turned over to her for back taxes after he died. She was quite elderly when she died almost 100. I feel she never mastered the English language because of this or may have been deaf or something like that. John Bowles accompanied his daughter, Nancy, to MO but returned to TN later. While he was gone Fanny was expelled from the Bildad Baptist Church (Church Minutes) because she wasn’t living with her husband??? She lived with her other daughter while he was gone but this is really strange to me. Maybe she just didn’t or wouldn’t speak English enough to explain where John was??? Clydene

Uhhmm. Not sure what we’re talking about anymore, but yeah, Henry County is where I grew up. Now I live a whopping 50 miles from there. ;~)
Most of our Bowling/Bouldin family is from Patrick County (right beside Henry) & still lives in or near there (Stokes, Rockingham, etc.). Don’t know if any went to TN. No known relation to Pocahontas through those lines, but have other VA Algonquian connections.

Sorry, I’m jumping around on ya….ha ha. My Ambrose’ (b. 1725c.) grandson, John Jefferson Williams m. Nancy M. Bowles. Her mother was Frances “Fanny” Bolling and she and her husband John M. Bowles lived in Henry Co. before moving to TN. Fanny’s sister, Nancye/Nancy Bolling married the brother of John M.Bowles – William Bowles. Fanny and Nancy Bollings parents were John and Mary Jefferson Bolling of Chesterfield Co., VA who previously lived on Licking Hole Creek. I’m wondering where the connection is to Henry Co., VA and why these two young ladies were there. There was a Field Jefferson who hand land in Henry Co. and a possible uncle of both by their mother – this could be the connection? Nancy married in Franklin Co., VA, 1800 according to her marriage bann, just across the line from Fanny Bolling Bowles. I also have a letter of permission for Nancy to marry Wm. Bowles that is signed by her parents. Patrick Co. is a possible location for a connection. I recall a Jeremiah Bowling/Bolling there I believe. Ambrose lived in Orange Co., NC on Sawra land and previously lived adj. to the Nottaway Circle Track according to a VA Royal Land Grant.
They hopped around like fleas on a hot skillet. I can barely keep track anymore so don’t feel bad about not knowing what I’m talking about….tee hee.
March 28, 2008 at 8:08 pm #30937I have a weird concept here 🙂
The Bolling family…a very well known Powhatan surname……the original recorded Saponi words had borrowed words from the Powhatan.
🙂
March 28, 2008 at 8:08 pm #30938your Husband is like my wife Clydene 🙂
Her family is in Ga, Fl, Va, and NC…..and she claims Seminole thru her mom. I keep trying to get her to do her dad’s family tree.. I keep telling her she probally got Saponi also since her dad is one of the Richardsons.
She defiently got the native eyes 🙂
March 28, 2008 at 8:08 pm #30939Clydene: I saw this discussion on the Bowles family and wondered if there is any connection to Chief Bowles, a.k.a The Bowl? He was a red headed Cherokee chief that led a mixed group of Indians west prior to removal and then ended up in East Texas. Just a curiousity question.
Beeleaf: Elisha Collins of Patrick County, VA; is that Elisha brother to David Collins 1750 or Elisha son of David 1750, or Elisha son of another Collins?
March 28, 2008 at 8:08 pm #31047I have some of the srartown dig site map stuff posted in I think “old maps” thread…..might be a interesting read for Saratown…..one of the tribes that became with the Catawba was not that far away……my wife is wanting me to fold clothes and I’m trying to get to the store to get more cigarettes so I’ll come check this thread out more and go thru all the replies (I’ve only read the first post thus far).
My line of the collins went from Granville (which part of orange county was formed from) and then into york and rutherford.
March 28, 2008 at 8:08 pm #31066No! No connection to The Bowl. My Nancy M. Bowles Williams migrated from TN to St. Francois Co., MO where she died. I guess it’s possible they might be related somewhere back a few generations but I haven’t seen any proof of that. Nancy’s NA blood comes from her mother’s Bolling Family – the Red Bollings of VA as they were know in early times. Clydene
March 28, 2008 at 8:08 pm #31067I’m sure with intermarriages of different tribes, the languages mingled with words being interchanged.
Actually, the surprising thing is that there was no such tribe as the Powhattan. The English called Pocahontas’ father Powhattan and named the tribe Powhattan. In the Historical Society of Virginia at Richmond, I found a document that states that Pocahontas was Cherokee and it was written by Robt. Bolling who would have known for sure. The Powhatan Confederacy was a mixture of several tribes. NA linguistics is a new area for me so I can’t say whether Saponi, Cherokee or the language that Powhatan spoke was the same dialect. I just can’t seem to wrap my head around all the NA language groups so I’ll leave that to someone who knows better than me. I took a Choctaw Language class and convinced myself that I’d never live long enough to master anything but one word phrases…..ha ha. Clydene
