Hey Dan,
What were the results of that DNA test you took? That is if you don’t mind sharing them?

I took the AncestrybyDNA 2.5 test which follows the Autosomal DNA line. The results showed:
19% Native American
81% European
00% African
00% East Asian
Actually I was only expecting anywhere from 0% to maybe 6% because the only evidence that I had were stories passed down through the family.
My mother also took the test and she shows 6% Native American. I assume that I inherited 3%, or half, from her so the other 16% would have been from my dad. If I received half from him, he would have been around 32%.
This has really changed my perspective. For example, when I was growing up on our farm and we would sometimes find arrowheads or other artifacts, my dad would always make a big deal about how the Indians made them hundreds of years ago so I developed an appreciation.
Now though when I look at those arrowheads I think, my people, my ancestors made them. I think that’s why I was so happy to learn that the Nottoway were in the Gray family. The Nottoway were the people who would have been on that farm.

Your Dad never told you anything? If he was 32% man he had to know it . Now another thing I have found Bryant’s marrying into the Bass family. Didn’t you say your Dad had Bryant’s in his line? All those Bass go back to the Nansemond Indians. They are marrying into my family like hotcakes LOL. My Rogers go back into Nansemond County and it’s looking like some of them ended up in Southampton. This would be because the split of the Nansemond due to being Christian and Non-Christian. Nansemond lived with the Nottoways for awhile.

Thanks for sharing on going home. I don’t think I have ever experienced a “tight knit” sense of community. I moved so much as a kid. I wanted my children to feel the stability of one place and they had that. Then they move away!!!
And Dan, the Hunts were in Va early. Deeds showed that James and Ralph Hunt were in Hanover. James and Ralph were brothers. I had Ralph in Lunenburg..James was in those counties and Pittsylvania, Halifax and died in Charlotte co. Ralph is my direct line..son Memucan came into Granville co NC..son John born in Franklin. Nathaniel Macon born in Franklin co NC. I didn’t know of a Mary Hunt and Owen Griffin marriage. I think we’re on to something. Needs more investigating.
Thanks, Sue J
March 24, 2006 at 10:48 pm #20093Do you by chance have Rogers in your line from Northampton Cty NC?

My dad had said that he “thought” that we had some Indian in the family but he didn’t know any details. He did say that he thought that his grand mother, his mother’s mother, was half Indian. But he was basing this on her looks only. He said she had darker skin and straight dark hair. She was Lula (Alma) Gray. If his parents knew anything, they never told my dad. Of course, Lula Gray would have been part Nottoway. But my theory is that he had Native American from several branches and didn’t know it. It seems that during that time, if there was an Indian in the family they didn’t talk about it. As I said in an earlier post, my dad had dark skin and straight dark hair. He looked like an Indian. I have my mother’s features, brown hair, green eyes and light skin.

March 24, 2006 at 10:48 pm #20095Yeah they kept quiet about Indians in the family. My grandmother told us but my grandfather never did… My aunts and mother were told not to tell anyone.

I just found this online. Other sites showed Jordan Barret’s father as Edmund,
And this is his will in Southampton.

I’ve been looking at the Mary Hunt and Owen Griffin and ended up with William Hunt and Judith Burton. My Hunt and Allen lines connect, Burton and Allen connect but I hadn’t gotten this far to see the Hunt/Burton connection. There may be a generation in between Mary Hunt and William…not sure yet. I know it’s really complicated. Ironically I started working on Burton lines the other day so I already had a lot written down before you mentioned the Hunt and Griffin. I now have a complex weave of these families and I may need help to sort it out…or many hours.!!!!!:) :)Sue J
March 24, 2006 at 10:48 pm #20105Dan, Maybe you already had this? If not,

I meant to mention earlier that I didn’t find all this out on the Gray’s it was given to me by another Gray descendent but I verified his info and he was right on the mark. He’s a doctor up in New York and has been to England and all over researching.

For some reason I can’t open those links you sent. But you have some interesting information. With all the info that you and Linda have sent, it’s taking a while to look through it all. I’m trying to link the Grays in my family to the ones that Linda referred to. I’m doing most of my research with Ancestry.com but I saw your links went to rootsweb.com. I need to get familiar with that link. Ah well, so much good information, so little time.
Keep the good info coming,
Dan

Do you necessarily have to recieve exactly half of what ever your father or mother is?
When the cells go through mitosis, I am not certain that everything gets split evenly. If it did, wouldn’t all brothers and sisters have identical genetic makeups?
I am guessing that a person who is 100% Indian, who has a child with a person who is 100% caucasion, could have a child that would test out to be any percentage between 0 and 100% Indian or caucasion. You just don’t know.
Saying you are 1/4 Indian because your grandpa was a full blood is one thing, but that wouldn’t necessarily mean a DNA test would show that you were 25% Indian, does it?
March 24, 2006 at 10:48 pm #20147Trying to recall my high school Biology, I think Rockhound is right – ‘course, that was ‘some time ago’ 🙂

The LDS have Edmond Barretts parents as Edmond Sr and Sarah VICK. Interesting….
There is another will of Edmond (Edward) with wife Sarah…
