Beeleaf….where is this Dan/Smith/Mayo River area?
April 29, 2002 at 7:09 pm #29956Roni, do you know where Martinsville is?
The Dan covers multiple VA and NC counties near there.
All 3 rivers flow through Patrick County, VA. Old censuses were divided up by those rivers. Smith and Mayo also in Henry County, VA and maybe down into NC.
April 29, 2002 at 7:09 pm #29957Also, if you are familiar with Philpott Dam (Bassett, Fairystone Park area), it’s construction covered up one of the Saura villages. “Sibling” of Kerr Dam (Buggs Island), where Occoneechee Island is/used to be.

April 29, 2002 at 7:09 pm #29968Yes Beeleaf that was the area I was referring to, I do not think it is coincidence like you siad that it is close to Goinstown, as my first Minor and Goins were from the Rockingham/Patrick area. I have posted on the Rockingham County Indians. I do believe that my family is a unique blend of the remnant tribes of this early Virginia area and I do most definetly believe one group is the Saura. I have attached pics of my granpaw and greatgranpaw and Aunt. My granpaw is Elijah Creech Minor.:D Up until the 1870 us census the Minors were always listed as mulatto or FPC. They were considered by some as the almost pure Indian stock component of the MElungeons. My Minor family was also singled out by Plecker, he mentioned my grgrgrgranpaw Zachariah Minor by name in one of his famous letters. So we know its there, and he is also the one that married Aggie Sizemore. So that component helped too. It is amazing like you say how certain areas can make you feel. Like my first Pow Wow, the processional brought tears to my eyes or the time we stopped at little big horn- every hair on my body was tingling and on end. I always wondered if I inherited some of my mamaws talent, she had the sight ( I know ya’ll will think I am crazy) but she did, I have her firebeand on my forehead and the back of my neck LOL. Anyway I will stop reminicing -I can get boring I see the deer look coming over your face 😀
April 29, 2002 at 7:09 pm #29973Saw a Martha Minor living with the George Dodson family in 1850 PCVA census. Listed as mulatto, also. Is she one of your relations? My search didn’t find other Minors then, but I know I’ve seen them in other PC census, living not far from my family. They might have been in a surrounding county or across the line at the time. You probably already know this, but just in case…when you’re looking, be sure to check out Henry County, VA, as it is the county across the line from Rockingham. Aforementioned Martinsville is an independant city, but geographically is snuggled up in a blanket of Henry County. Henry and Patrick were both cut from Pittsylvania County, and so forth and so on.
I grew up in that area, stayed with some Sizemores while my folks worked. Small towns with many people who claim native heritage. Some more than a little “obviously not kidding”. Think you’re on the right track.
Probably going around in circles a bit, but Doug is in some of the PCGSVA photos here. Heck, some of the others might ring a bell…who knows…
