Hey all, Becky and I spent this weekend chasing cemeteries in southwestern Va……. Carroll and Floyd counties. Hillsville was having their fall festival so we got to meet and exchange info with the genealogical society, historical society and chamber of commerce. We made a lot of friends who were very informed and eager to help. The area was:
North of the Blue Ridge:
Augusta co…. 1738
Botetourt co…. 1770
Fincastle co…. 1773
Montgomery co…. 1777
Wythe co…. 1790
Grayson co…. 1793
Carroll co…. 1842
South of the Blue Ridge:
Lunenburg co…. 1746
Halifax co…. 1752
Pittsylvania co…. 1767
Henry co…. 1777
Patrick co…. 1791
Grayson co…. 1810
Carroll co…. 1856
We also purchased 2 books:
Carroll 1765-1815 The Settlements by John Perry Alderman (471 pages)
Cemetery Records of Carroll County, Virginia compiled by the Carroll County Historical Society (724 pages)
so if anyone’s ancesters owned land in this area between this dates or if they are buried in this area, we will gladly share this info.
Brenda….. is this a different incident from one you are aware of?
22 May 1810 Paul Collins
Accused of having stolen, and carried away, 2 hogs of the property of James Cox. The court found him not guilty and ordered him released.
October 18, 2004 at 4:46 am #11295Do you have marriage records? There are Gibson’s living on the lands of my Waylands in Lower Russell County, Virginia, from 1797 to 1815. Other dealings between the 2 families appear making me think they are related. Francis Wayland paid land taxes for John Gibson, for instance. Nevil Wayland’s wife was “Keziah” and there was a “Cussiah” Gibson that I think became his wife. Cussiah’s mother was Mary, and there is a Mary Gibson in Stoney Creek Primitive Baptist Church minutes where Nevil and Kuziah Wayland are also mentioned. No husband for Mary is mentioned, but Cussiah’s father had died earlier, so were it her parents, no father would have been mentioned. They would have married in the late 1770s or 1780s.
I also had some Richey’s probably from some of those counties but I am not sure which ones. Later census just says “John Richey”, b. @ 1797 in Virginia (he died 1861 in Arkansas).

There are no Richey’s or Gibson’s indexed as landowners in Carroll co Va between 1765 and 1815. There are no Richey burials indexed and no Gibson burials earlier than 1899. Your people appear to have stayed south and west of the New River plateau.
About marriage bonds…… The writeup on each early settler family incorporates all known documentation and references: document #s and locations….. this includes marriage bonds, land grants and deeds, wills, parish records, children and their marriage partners, militia muster lists, court records, alliegance oaths, et al.
