I can’t remember if I’ve mentioned here that a friend of mine has told me that he saw documentation, he thinks it was in some records of a VA branch of the London company, about an explorer who found the Sissipaha living on the Dan River (NC/VA border) referred to as the “Blackfoot of the Dan.” He says he read that they were raided by the Yamassee and most sold into slavery in Barbardos, the survivors fled to the Occoneechee.
He can’t remember any more, and I’ve already tried looking for London Company records but found nothing so far. He also mentioned the records of the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel, but I could’nt find anything relating to this early time period. Or it may have been in reference to a treaty made with the London company.
The VA Company of London existed between 1610 and 1625, something like that, which I think is too early for the Yamasee to be involved in slaving. I know they were involved with the Tuscarora being carted off to Barbados in 1713. Perhaps my friend has just misremembered. Also, if they ran off to the Occoneechee, it would have to be before the 1670’s when they were squashed and were on the run themselves. Anybody know anything of Yamassee history? I’m trying to figure out how early they were being pressured to involve themselves in all this.
I know how easily memory can get distorted so we can’t quote anything about this till we know where the citations are. I’d appreciate any help with this research.

This page was put up in 1997 and the information should be saved in case this page takes off to outer space also. http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Lake/3577/charlestonyamastono.htm

June 15, 2002 at 4:21 am #5220Thanks, there was good information there. What I’m trying to find is evidence that the Yammassee were raiding folks all the way to the VA border that heavily a good 40 years before their war with the English. I know they were involved in this in 1713 when they defeated the Tuscarora and captured many that were sent to Barbados.
I figure, if these clues are correct, and our Sissipaha fled to the Occaneechee, that would likely be prior to the Occaneechi Massacre in the 1670’s, since after that, why run to them? They’re on the run themselves by then.
The thing that’s tough about this info is that none of the big boys ever found it. There’s no mention of this in Swanton or Mooney or any of the others who were trying to exhaustively chronicle every scrap of original source evidence on these tribes, so how was this missed? Where is it hidden away?
