Hello! It’s just me, Lynella. Hey, I’ve been looking at this for years and not getting anywhere untill I came across this site. I am so excited. Things are falling into place a bit, but I could still use some help if anyone can.
On my mother’s side, (She always told me Blackfoot) She grew up in a house in Indiana. Across the street was the Blackfoot Cemetary. That’s all I knew. She said My Grandmother was part Blackfoot. That name is Nora Sutton. Her mother’s name was Louise Gentry. There is also these names in the lineage, Rachel Clay Evans, and a Ferguson. This last weekend, I found a copy of an old article (my sister Clara had) about the history of the Blackfoot Church and Cemetary in Indiana. She has a picture of the church. Then, my sister Donna tells me that she was at the Federal Center in Denver researching and she found, on mom’s side, an affidavit signed in 1826 by a man named Aaron Hodges who said on the affidavit that he was not black, nor mullato, but Indian. His daughter Sara was marying, but I can’t recall the name. Then, Donna tells me that this affidavit was in the Cherokee records. So, I’m thinking now that we had both Blackfoot and Cherokee. I just need help pulling this all together, I’m not very good at it!
Clara told me last weekend that our dad (Carl Ashby) told her that way back in history one of our relatives, an Ashby man had a slave known only as the Ashby Indian. This Ashby Indian married the Ashby man’s daughter. Dad told Clara that this Indian was Saponi, but he pronounced it Sioux-Poni. So now i’m thinking we had Saponi on both sides as well as Cherokee.
Help! I’m so confused! You can also e-mail me at lynellarainhawk@yahoo.com
July 21, 2004 at 3:42 pm #10246I’m affraid I don’t have a lot of info for you, except that I also have Indiana Blackfoot family stories. My stories center around Ray, Roe and/or Reynolds surnames. They lived in Indiana from about 1825 on. Between 1825 and 1875 they moved around a lot, including Decatur Co., Jefferson Co., Bartholomew Co., and Sullivan Co. Before that, the Ray family seems to have come from Estill Co., KY. What little I have before that points to Virginia.
July 21, 2004 at 3:42 pm #10291Welcome to the forum, Lynella,
I think there may have been more than one “Blackfoot Church” or “Blackfoot Cemetery” in Indiana but one I recall (that could be a stretch!) was in the Gibson Co., Ind area (S.W. Ind near the Wabash River) – you might use the “search” button to find mention of that on this site.
If you can you tell me when Nora Sutton or Louise Gentry were born, I may be able to help a little, and I’ll post the data/info in the “Share Genealogy” section of this forum.
Phil, I’m working on your info but I’ve hurt my arm and hand and it takes quite an effort to get anything typed in with one hand 🙂 but I will as soon as I’m able to type at a reasonable speed again.

July 21, 2004 at 3:42 pm #10292Ok, Bill………. what were you doing that an old man shouldn’t be doing that hurt your arm and hand, huum?
Wishing you quick healing, my brother 😉

July 21, 2004 at 3:42 pm #10293Phil,
Hey! Thank you for taking the time to reply. We had some Ashby in Kentucky also. They actually started out in Virginia then moved on from there. I’ll check out some more stuff from my family and see if there is any mention of your people in there. I have 6 older sisters and 2 older brothers. Someone of them should have something!
Bill C.,
You’re awsome! Thank you for the reply. Sorry to both of you for taking so long to get back on here. We had a lot of lightening and I had to keep the modem unplugged for days & days! I just left a message for my sister Donna to see when Nora Sutton and Louise Gentry were born. I really wish she had been home. My oldest sister is not doing so well, so I’m sure Donna is down in Ellicott to visit her.
Sorry to here about your hand/arm thing (and I hope it’s not one of ‘those’ things that causes blindness!)
I think, but I’m not sure, that our Blackfoot Cemetary and Church are in Pike County, Indiana. I could be wrong, but that county is a blinking neon sign in my brain right now.
I just rechecked Nora’s photo, it doesn’t have any dates on it. I hope Donna gets back to me soon. Well, my wolf boy, Smokey, wants attention so I guess I’ll go wrestle him a bit. He’s 6 months old and weighs 91.3 pounds. The vet says he could still double in size! Oh man, he’s only 15 pounds behind me! Maybe that’s why I’m aching all over today!
Thank You Very Much Guys. I’ll get back to ya’. Love & Light, Lynella. lynellarainhawk@yahoo.com
July 21, 2004 at 3:42 pm #10294Bill,
Here we go, Nora Sutton (Grandma) DOB 3/22/1895 in Spurgeon Indiana, died, 2/18/1949. Burried in Blackfoot Cemetary in Spurgeon, Pike County, Indiana. Married Elsie Kinder.
Iva Leota Ferguson (Great Gran.- Nora’s mom) DOB 11/9/1870 in Crawford County, Kentucky. Married Charlie Sutton, Donna thinks he was Indian also? His DOB 12/8/1874 also in Crawford County, Kentucky. Charlie died 11/8/1961. There’s no date for when Iva died. They were both buried in the Blackfoot Cemetary in Spurgeon, Pike County, Indiana.
Who was Iva Leota Ferguson’s parents?
I have a Aaron D. or B. Hodges or Hodge, DOB 1804 with a Cherokee Number and His daughter Polly Hodges or Hodge with a cherokee number. She married a William Reed on 3/14/1839.
So there is a gap I think.
And somewhere thereis also a Rachel C.A Evans or Rachel Clay Evans who married a Henry Sutton from Scioto, Ohio on 11/7/1861. Another strange gap? Perhaps no relation?
So this is what I got from Donna Today and I still need to search out that Ashby Indian who was a slave that married an Ashby daughter. (That’s my dad’s side) He said Suponi–I know it’s Saponi but I’m thinking about his back woods hillbilly drawl and it would have sounded like Sioux-poni!!!
Thank You Awsome Guy! Lynella.
July 21, 2004 at 3:42 pm #10296Dreaminghawk and Lynella,
You naughty people!!
Actually, I WAS doing something that I shouldn’t have…..
was moving 18 lb blocks, lost my grip on one, tried to “save” it with one hand — didn’t work out too well!! Should have had my wife move them!!! 🙂
Lynella,
Pike Co is next door to Gibson Co., Ind.
I’ll try to let you know what I find.
Bill
July 21, 2004 at 3:42 pm #10297I also meant to address the “awesome” comment…….
the only thing “awesome” about me, is the awesome stupidity of trying to catch that block one-handed!
Bill
July 21, 2004 at 3:42 pm #10298OUCH! Sorry about that! I do hope it doesn’t hurt too much.
Thank you for your lightening speed reply. I’ll wait with baited breath for any info you find. Which actually, I’m saying Sleep tight and I’ll look in on this tomorrow. I keep having to unplug the modem. Nature has been talking a lot up here in the mountains and I can’t afford ANOTHER modem! Love & Light, Lynella.
July 21, 2004 at 3:42 pm #10299You’re still AWSOME! Have your wife kiss it. If nothing else, it will be fun! Lynella.
July 21, 2004 at 3:42 pm #10302Lynella,
Look for some info in the “Share Genealogy” section listed under a new thread “Charlie SUTTON, ‘Saponi in Indiana”.
Bill
July 21, 2004 at 3:42 pm #10326Thank You so very much. I’ll get right on that. Quickly cause’ the clouds are building outside! Lynella.
July 21, 2004 at 3:42 pm #10468OK, I’ll post what I found on the “Share Genealogy Research” section of the forum today.
While you’re waiting, go to the Indiana State Library’s genealogy section and check out who your people married in Gibson, Pike and Warrick Counties, Ind., before 1850. This file’s marriage dates are somewhat corrupted, so if you see a year listed as “2032”, remember that this file only has listings from 1816 to 1850, so “2032” is actually “1832” (I verified this with ISL).
For “last name”, fill in your surnames and leave the first name and spouse’s names BLANK. Then, for each of your surnames, fill in the county name in the next to the last block/field.
That database is at:

July 21, 2004 at 3:42 pm #10475Bill,
A-H-H-H-H!!!!! I’ve just spent an hour and a half on that link, doing exactly what you said and every single time it came back with nothing. No matter who I put or every county with every name all the way back as far as I could go, it kept saying the same thing, NOTHING!!!!!! What on God’s Green Earth am I doing wrong? This is absolutely nuts! I am jsut way too stupid to do this! I think I’d have better luck if I tatood these peoples names all over my body and walked around Indiana! A-R-G!
But thank you for being so cool! Love & Light, Lynella.
July 21, 2004 at 3:42 pm #10488Only type in “Last name” such as “hodges”
and “county of marriage” such as “warrick”.
The other counties your people lived in, in that area, are
Pike, Gibson, Spencer, Crawford & Orange.
