October 23, 2003 at 8:26 pm #7995Well, Bennett is one of the names that connects with the Sinkeys who are found in Huntington, PA, but as a first name. The two names together are Bennett Mason. I found Bennetts and Masons living near one another and in the region, I think, of the rest of the folks Bill looked up for me who live in the middle of PA. Wish I knew PA geography better.

PS: I found my ancestor on this web site:
http://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/pa/bedford/military/militia-1.txt He was a Pennsylvania Ranger for Bedford County.
Some names there of natives who fought in the War but on the other side. Not sure the ethnicity of William Sinkey though.
October 23, 2003 at 8:26 pm #8007I want to add one more URL for those of us who are looking in central Pennsylvania for our folks. I found a Web site full of helpful information here: http://www.departments.bucknell.edu/isr/sheary/index.html. It includes an online 1855 history book of Buffalo Valley, including information on Chief Logan’s father and helpful information on searching, as well as a list of other resources and links to other county historical societies.

October 23, 2003 at 8:26 pm #8009Cindy,
Here is another one of my surnames…BENNETT. I have two separate lines, one out of Virginia and one that leads nowhere.
My mother’s father was Edward Bennett who lived along the border of WV/Pa (Taylor County) He was born 1864 according to marriage certificate. Married twice but to sisters. 1) Martha Cottrill 2) Melvina Cottrill daughters of Calvin Cottrill. Mom was adopted so I know next to nothing about this line. What I have heard on both of these lines is that they were a strange bunch. Of course what can I expect………a family that is normal
October 23, 2003 at 8:26 pm #8012Sounds like my family, tee hee hee. However, my relative’s name is Bennet Mason. But, if you do a Google search for the name of Chief Logan’s father who lived in this area, you end up in a genealogy that took me right back to this PA location of the Mason, Bennett, and, as Bill found, the Sinkeys, Potters and Hustons families. It is Bedford County, on the border of WVA, Maryland and PA. A Sinkey, the uncle of my ggrandmother, marries a daughter of this Bennett Mason, I believe. I do not think that they are any Bennetts or Masons in my direct line. I can check out what I have though if you want.
