Native American genealogy research from the Piedmont of NC & VA
Here’s a link to classic southern mens bags, an item that may have once been commonly seen but a mans only item and for some reason may have been a prestige item, and maybe not all men had them. (sounds like a lot of conjecture).
However I think that women today could make a much smaller item based on this style and wear it as a small purse/pouch.
I have only seen one old circa 1830 womans bag and it was Seminole, and was a draw string type, very large and square, the centeral panel in the middle was black velvet and the top and bottom maybe silk or something close to it.
