April 20, 2008 at 3:58 am #30660Can this book/dictionary be purchased?
April 20, 2008 at 3:58 am #30667yes…but that is all the book has for the Tutelo language.
April 20, 2008 at 3:58 am #31387Looks like words from the first and second posts are from American Language Reprints vol. 26, Minor Vocabularies of Tutelo and Saponi, by Edward Sapir. This is a small book, also has a small Saponi vocabulary from Fort Christanna, and some historical background.
The other stuff is from vol. 23, The Tutelo Language, by Horatio Hale. I got these through interlibrary loan at the local community college, you can get a regular paper copy, or a pdf file on a CD. There is more in these books than what is posted above.
The ALR series has dictionaries of other eastern languages, including Powhatan, Tuscarora, Roanoke, theres 30 volumes so far in various eastern languages
April 20, 2008 at 3:58 am #31395bone, wahoi Tutelo (Hale 1883), wahui Tutelo (Hale 1883).
Got a bit side tracked due to more focus on tsalagi language. But the efforts here are still much appreciated.
Spilleddi, how would the two words above be pronounced? Would it be like
wah hoe ee or way hoe ee or something else?
April 20, 2008 at 3:58 am #31401You can say it either wah-hoe-ee or wah-hu-ee, the “u” as “ou” in you. You could also probably get away with saying the wah as wuh.
I know what you mean about getting distracted by another language. I can only handle a few at a time. So many languages, so little time.
April 20, 2008 at 3:58 am #31416Thank you, Tanya.
So many languages, so little time.
So true dat. It has altered my understanding of (or apathy toward)) the English language quite a bit, too. Y’know, like the need for proper grammar ain’t there no more. ;~)
What strikes me as funny is sometimes when I can’t think of the tsalagi word, I remember Spanish, not English.

Thats true for a lot of people when they learn a second language. Its seems if youre working on a second language and can’t think of a word, your brain will pull vocabulary from any other second language you know. I do that all the time.
Which Cherokee dialect you learning? What learning material are you using?
Actually, I’ve never liked grammar. I always hated English class in school. Why study a language you already know.
April 20, 2008 at 3:58 am #31425Why study a language you already know. {?} Well actually we don’t speak “English.” We speak slang. :)] …. Besides our Native languages do have a certain flow that sounds a whole lot better to the ears. Ain’t it true? :)]
April 20, 2008 at 3:58 am #31429Which Cherokee dialect you learning? What learning material are you using? .
Probably got a mix of dialects going. Had been learning words here and there from an old dictionary (Eastern band) for some time. But am taking the online lessons via Cherokee Nation. Think that is otali? Instructor is a sweet fella whose first language is tsalagi.
Actually, I’ve never liked grammar. I always hated English class in school. Why study a language you already know.
Hehe, that’s an interesting point. It was the composition part of English class that I liked. But that grammar stuff always came with it. Thorns n roses.
The funny part about remembering spanish is that I don’t remember that much of it when that’s what I’m trying to think of. ;~)
