How old are your children? One of the friends traveling with me has a 7 yr. old grandson who is ready for his first pow-wow. I’m not sure whether he will come to this one, or wait for something closer to us. It is a treat to watch the children dancers.
Anyway, I’m happy for you and your family, getting to go to your first together.

Four are grown for the most part (26, 23, 18, 17) and the 3 that will be coming along are 10, 8, and 7; my 7year-old is also a boy the other two are girls and are very excited as it is their first pow wow as well.:)

I remember the first time I took my grandson (he was 3 then) to the pow wow in Mebane…it started raining and the dancers had to remove their regalia with feathers, which meant several men dancers were dancing bare chested….well, Austin was dancing on his own outside of the circle…and pulled off his shirt as well…his mama just about had a fit….he was just imitating what he had seen. I thought it was cute….and he and GPa had a good time dancing off to the side in the rain. I hope to bring him to one if I have him on a weekend there is a pow wow.

Children have such a free spirit, it is something that should not be tamed…if this were true, we would be true to the Spirit and have fewer inhabitions.:)

We will be driving up on Saturday and staying at the Days Inn in Franklin, VA. I know Tanya(Spilleddi) will be driving in on Saturday and staying there as well. For those not familiar to the area, there are a couple of places to eat there….Dairy Freeze (on Highway 58), and For Pete’s Sake (on road beside Courtland Motel)…both have good food. Of course, there are lots of places to eat in Franklin, which is just up the road. There is a Food Lion close by the fairgrounds, too. And lots of fruit/vegetable stands along Highway 58.
And if you read the pow wow flyer….they will have great food there as well. The sweet potato jacks are out of this world….and the corn…yummmm! As with any other pow wow in the summertime….please hydrate while you enjoy the dancing. We usually take our small cooler with some water and drinks. And remember to use sunscreen because the circle is out in the sun…there are picnic tables in the shade, though. The parking lot is just a short walk from the fairgrounds.

Not sure whether we’ll be heading out Friday afternoon or Saturday morning, but the plan is to be there for grand entry Saturday. Looking forward to it!
Hmm, looks like that Days Inn may be booked up for that weekend.
Think we may grab a spot at that Enfield KOA. Och’s grandson is coming with us and very excited.
I think we are all excited…I am looking forward to meeting so many folks. Ken and I have been working on regalia all week. Hopefully, things will come together…I know I am ready for a weekend away!
On a side note, if anyone does still need a room, there are right many hotels in Franklin and Suffolk. And make sure you mention the pow wow to them…that may get you a room if they told you they were sold out. And the rate is cheaper.

I need to make something. For the soul of doing it, and also because little feathers keep marking the path. Thinking maybe a shield and/or a fancy talking stick. Hmmm…sounds like a good thread for the crafty tent on here.
Well, the regalia is just simple clothing…it’s my first. But, each piece has a meaning and I was told that that was the most important part. I hope Sam gets my moccasins ready…or I may have to substitute something else….
I was told that little feathers were prayer feathers….I have found some as well…when a good friend of ours died….that day I found many small feathers outside my office….all the way to my van. I gifted them to the family. Look around at the vendors…they can give you some good ideas for using feathers.
On a separate note…are there any folks that are MSG sensitive? If so, please ask the food vendor if they use it in the preparation of their food. I had a reaction at one pow wow to the Indian taco meat…they used a powdered seasoning packet to flavor the meat. Have never had any problems with other tacos…just this one vendor.
Thank you, Becky! I understand about the pieces each having meaning. It makes perfect sense. Perhaps this is why ideas are coming so slowly for me. I need to go slow and pay attention.
I feel like each little feather is a gift that belongs somewhere (other than the box they’re stored in). Sometimes they come or go in a special way that is unmistakeable. I guess I need that, as there is still a part of me who also hears other voices saying, “Or maybe it’s just that birds molt, especially near feeders.” Anyway, they will certainly be used in prayers, especially grateful ones. Birds have always meant a lot. But I could write about that all day, so I’ll stop myself. ;~)

Green Corn Festival
I forgot to ask this before. I’ve been reading what I can find about the Green Corn Ceremony. As would be expected, it varies from tribe to tribe. I can see there will be feasting. I’m wondering if there will be a ball game or “busking”? Do any of you prepare for the ceremony in any special ways that you would care to share?
Does anyone know whether this ceremony was/is part of Saponi culture?

I’m not sure what they will do this year….but, in the past the corn has been tied to the posts in the circle. Don’t think there will a ball game….but, you never know. When you get there make sure you speak to Chief Walt Brown…he can answer your questions. And you do want to be around to see the “bonding” of the couple…that is very interesting and varies depending on the heritage and the person doing the bonding…I have seen three and all of them were different.
Oh yeah, we want to be there for the bonding. Didn’t see a time for it, but we’ll be there Saturday.
We’re actually going to be hitting the road this afternoon & heading that direction, unless the weather changes our minds. Gonna camp at either that Enfield KOA (they said they have plenty of spots, btw) or Jellystone in Emporia. The hotel info is printed as a backup. ;~)

Just wanted to say it was so nice to meet so many of you at the Cheroenhaka Pow wow. A big thank you to Linda for the regalia loan and the opportunity to dance! It was such a moving experience for me…while dancing I just had to close my eyes and feel the beat of the drums…thought I was going to tip over a couple of times, but somehow remained on my feet. I cannot express my thanks enough! I hope you all enjoyed it as much as I did. Blessings,

Becky and I just got home and unloaded. It was a most excellent weekend in so many ways. I’m still “in the zone”. Shirley, a warning…. once the drum gets in you, it’s hard to get it out…… I’m afraid that you are already hooked 😉
My legs aren’t used to dancing and we have been arguing about whether to be online or go to bed…… my legs won. Goodnight to all.
