Dreaminghawk,
That means a whole lot to me. I am proud to claim you as a cousin too!:) I feel that the roots here bring me home somehow to where I belong. It’s all very hard to explain. Probably don’t need to explain. Thanks. Saj:)
February 10, 2006 at 3:40 pm #31444As someone who spent over 50 years feeling like I didn’t belong anywhere, the truths I have found at Saponitown and the people that I now call cousins….I feel like I’m finally home. No, you don’t need to explain 😉
February 10, 2006 at 3:40 pm #31486I was trying to establish a connection for James William Whitfield in the areas of Roxboro and Flat River township. He married Catie Lewis Hicks that lived and died on my wife’s parents land, that we are living on at the present. I got the name James Towler Whitfield and Susannah Minchew from an historical book that my wife Sandy’s aunt from her mother’s side helped compile before she died last Fall. We can trace her mother’s family, but nothing was known about James William Whitfield other than where he is buried, in the Hicks Family cemetery off of Billy Hicks Road in Person County.
February 10, 2006 at 3:40 pm #31487I will be glad to look in my information at home. I have several of the lines with siblings listed in my paperwork. I am a direct descendant of James and Susannah. We live in Person county off 501.
I imagine the book you are referring to is the Person County Heritage book, right?

Yes Becky,
it was in the Person County Heritage book, but it was the 1st Volume and we have not looked at the others that came later. I guess we don’t live very far apart, we are between the Oxford Hwy and 501. We just built a new home on Billy Hicks Rd, and the Hicks /Whitfield Family Cemetery is on the property with Morris, Yarbrough, William Brown and Billy Hicks s/o David A. Hicks famlies buried there. Any information will be apreciated and I intend to check out the Flat River Babtist Cemetery, as James William Whitfield family attemded that church.

February 10, 2006 at 3:40 pm #31494We do have copies of Vol. 2 and 3, but, most of that was additional/later information. Do keep in mind that the information is only as good as the submitter….the stories were not checked for accuracy.
Well, we will just have to come check out that cemetery since we have not made it over there yet. Have been wanting to do a complete survey to put on the genweb site, any way. I have visited the cemeteries in the Bushy Fork/Hurdle Mills area…that’s where Susannah and James Towler are buried. And the old homeplace is there as well.
Here’s the link to the page with the burials at Flat River. There are no real old burials there. This is not the original location of the original church. The original location was near where Mt. Zion is today. And then they split and became Flat River and Wheelers/Wheeleys….with burials in several locations.

February 10, 2006 at 3:40 pm #31505Welcome Sandbtucker!
I know you’ve seen this database before on Rootsweb, Mousini. This has a lot of info and some great resources given. When you check it out you’ll see that they show James William Whitfield to descend from George Washington Whitfield, brother of James Towler Whitfield. Saj

February 10, 2006 at 3:40 pm #31535Since George W. Whitfield was brother to James Towler Whitfield, how is he connected to this site or is it thru the mother, Susannah Minchew being Native American? I am from the Menominee Indian Nation of Wisconsin, I have lived here almost 2 years, but I have been in NC since 1983 off and on I should say. We are on high ground with water around us, and I have found a site that the Indians of this area might have used in the past, and someone found a lance point on the property last year. I have also found crude arrow heads, but the lance point the person who found it kept it.
Thanks for any help,Bryant
February 10, 2006 at 3:40 pm #31547Welcome Bryant, nice to have you here. Does your wife’s family has an oral tradition of Indian blood? Hicks is a possibility. The last place all the tribal Siouan were together at was Fort Christanna, immediately before their Diaspora, in Brunswick County, VA. The white planter/trader who lived nearby was a Hicks. He was admonished for selling them too much liquor. The Hicks name was adopted by some of these families.
Whereabouts in WI are you from? My mom was born there.
February 10, 2006 at 3:40 pm #31550Hi,Linda
I was born an raised in Keshena,Wi., near Shawano, and it is about 30 Miles East of Green Bay and about 140 miles North of Milwaukee.
The Hicks family has always owened the land as far as I can see. My wife’s father was William Dolphin Whitfield and his mother was Katie Luis Hicks, and her father was David A. Hicks (1840-1924) and her mother was Sarah A. Rhew (1837-1891), his 2nd wife was Sallie Suit (1842-1924).
William Archie “Billy” Hicks (1873-1936), who the road was named for that we live on, was the sister of Katie Luis Hicks Whitfield. As far as the Hicks being Native, I do not know. As I have mentioned before in another thread, that I got to this site by looking at Susannah Minchew, I GOOGLED the name and got here, so I thought she was Native or connected to Saponi. Of course James William Whitfield was my first choice because my wife has no knowledge of his side of his family, but I found nothing until I got to this site and found a lot of things or I should say a lot of people that was not known before.
Thanks, Bryant Tucker
February 10, 2006 at 3:40 pm #31552I have a cousin with the Hicks surname. Of course, it was her husband’s, however, I think she traced it back to Houston’s who were connected to Sam Houston (TX). As I understand it, there is rumored to be a little mixed there.

Hi,Mousini78
You were right before my eyes and it did not register. What I mean is that you are direct descendant to James Towler Whitfield, and if you are, I should be asking you the question about being Native or the connection to Saponi. The Person County Heritage book does not say anything about the Native connection, we have not gotten any copies yet, but I think Sandra wants to get them. It was her Aunt Janice Murray who did a lot of the research, I understand, for those books, she was a member of Person County Historical Society. Janice Murray married Sanda’s uncle
Otha Murray. Sandra’s mother was Mary Lee Murray Whitfield. Janice and Mary Lee have since passed on, in 2006 and 2007 respectively.
Thanks for any information that you may supply.

February 10, 2006 at 3:40 pm #32230Hey all you Cuzn’s, just thought I would bring this back. I have seen the Browns mentioned, any relation to Issac Brown and or David Erasmus Brown (Issacs son)? I am a direct decendent of Robert Shaw Hamilton who with his family relocated to the Red River Co., TX area. He was married to Elizabeth Bethea. He was friends with Houston. Wasn’t Houston either Creek or married to a Creek, maybe Choctaw?
It seems that many of these NDN families did an awful lot of entermarriage. I have recently been in contact with a Cuz from the Bethea side of my family and he still farms and lives on much of the old family place.
February 10, 2006 at 3:40 pm #32232Bryant…the story about Susannah states(in one version) that he pulled back her bonnet to see her beautiful “brown” face….and then I was told by a Mandy Garrett(Register of Deeds in Person county) about all the artifacts found where James and Susannah lived…..and the “Indians” buried in the back row of the cemetery where they are buried. William’s original cabin is still on the land…have you been there? So the circumstantial evidence is there…finding her parents has been a challenge..do know that there is a will for Judith Minchew that lists her granddaughter, Susannah..but have not seen the whole thing in its entirety.
But, through the Whitefield/Moore line there is NA lineage as well….but, it’s more the proponderance of evidence that we have to go on there..where they lived, who they associated with…rather than documented NA tribal history.
I knew Janice….we were in the Historical Society for a while until the politics got to be too much. She was a fine lady…and very knowledgeable. We do have copies of all the books..inherited from Ken’s aunt. Still want to get over there and check out that cemetery…we have a new grandbaby currently, so it may be winter time.

February 10, 2006 at 3:40 pm #37110This seems like a good Whit(e)field thread to bring back. A good starting point with several links if they still work.
