Hello;
My name is Aubrey G Cole researching my family, the Cole and Bowman’s.
I noticed on one of your threads which was posted on the internet (yahoo.com) some of you had brought up the names of John Cole , Hawkins Bowman and daughter Eliza Bowman Cole, Jefferson Cole etc.
Hawkins Bowman is my g-g-grandfather his daughter Eliza Bowman Cole is my g- grandmother. John Cole Married Eliza Bowman, Jefferson Cole is (wm. Jefferson Cole). Hawkins Bowman for what I can find out was born in Lincoln Co N. C. , John Cole and His father were suppose to have come from the Valley Of The Tennessee, He and Hawkins were Indians and I am having a heck of a time trying to trace these families back, I guess because of them being Indians. If anyone out there could shed some light on this I would be eternally grateful.
Tkanking you in advance and may the good lord bless
Aubrey G Cole 🙂
March 10, 2006 at 3:56 am #19734Hi again Aubrey. Thanks for the link. To the list, Aubrey and I are descended from Hawkins Bowman and his daughter Eliza Bowman. Hawk is listed as a Catawba Indian from either North Carolina or Virginia. I have visited his gravesite in Harlan Co, KY. Anyone with info on the Bowman’s or Cole’s can contact myself or Aubrey Cole. Both Hawk Bowman and John Cole are illusive characters with little or no info on them. All help appreciated. Thanks in advance.

March 10, 2006 at 3:56 am #19735HELLO jIM
sEE YOU MADE IT , i HAVE FOUND THIS SITE TO BE EDUCATIONAL AND INFORMATIVE.
March 10, 2006 at 3:56 am #19741Hi Aubrey & Jim,
I’ve looked at this and have a couple of questions.
What is the information based upon that Nancy Hensley was the wife of the John Cole, b.abt 1881/2 ?
(I found John & Nancy Cole living next door to Jacob (Jake) Cole b.abt. 1854/6, Eliza’s son, AND a Nancy Hensley (in Calvin Hensley’s household), on the 1900 Harlan Co Census)
Have you looked at the possibility that John, b.1881/2, is the son of Jacob and the Grandson of Eliza?
Do you have a death certificate for John, b.1881/2 ?
Do you know where John (Sr) and Eliza Cole were in 1860 and 1880?
Bill
March 10, 2006 at 3:56 am #19761Interesting coincidence. My ex’s Coles were working for Hensley’s in Boydton, VA, likely for generations.
March 10, 2006 at 3:56 am #19763Bill thanks for your response
The John and Nancy Cole living next to Jacob Cole are my grandparents He- Jojn Cole bornca 1881 or 1882 , Nancy Hensley Cole his wife born ca18 feb 1885. Jacob is suppose to be his bro or 1/2 bro , Iwas always told he was his bro. My g-mother Nancy Cole was daughter of Calvin and Minty Hensley, I to noticed that she was listed in Calvin and Mary Ritter Hensley’s Household because she did not have a sister named Nancy.
I do not have a death Certificate for John my G-father but was told that only his mother Eliza Bowman Cole is listed on it no father. From what I am told the reason no father was listed is because my g-fa John claimed that Jojn Cole who was the Husband of Eliza Bowman Cole died before he was Born. So far I have come up with 2 different death dates for John , Eliza’s Husband. However in 1888 harlan co ky tax list is a John Cole with 5 children ages 6-20, In the 1891 Harlan Co Ky tax list he is not listed but Eliza is listed with 5 children ages 6-20. I have no way to check and see if this john is Eliza’s Husband, because if he is it would mean that he died after my g-father was born.
There seems to be some secret the past famil would not talk about.
I have been unable to determine where John and Eliza lived 1860-1880.

My computer went out before I finished so I will try to finish.
There has been rumors that My g-father may have been fathered by a Bledsoe or A Brittain But I hav not been able to verify this or a marriage by Eliza to either of the last names.
Here’s thanking you in advance for any info you might be able to furnish. my G-father had bro’s or 1/2 bro’s Jake(jacob) Wash (washington, Robert,a sister Rebecca, and others that I will have to find names of.
Bwst regards and I thank You Again

Thanks for the help and where is Boydton va located as the Hensley were numerous in my family on g-mother’s side.
We have her traced back to Swisserland. As a young boy I ask her one day why she named my uncle George Washington Cole and she replied that George Washington was a very distant couisn of hers and so It proved out.
Have a Wonderful day

I have just talked with a cousin of mine in Ohio and she had my grandfather’s name as John M. Cole born 12 aug 1883, don’t know if this will help or not.
March 10, 2006 at 3:56 am #19905Eliza Bowman Cole was my gr.gr. grandmother. She had an affair with her father’s boss, James Brittian of Harlan Co, KY. His father was Gen. George Brittian. It’s very likely that she could have had another child by James Brittian also. The Brittian’s never accepted my gr. gr. grandmother or her child fathered by James Brittian. This is my gr.grandmother Mary Elizabeth Brittian Cole. She married Charles Henry Thompson of Lee Co. VA. My grandmother was named after her mother. My grandmother’s name was Mary Neil and her nickname was Lizzy. She was Mary Elizabeth’s youngest child of seven. I now live in her “homeplace” in New Albany, Indiana. Aubrey, your uncle William (Bill) Cole used to visit often. I remember him well. as I’ve told you before. It’s possible that Eliza’s child John, your grandfather, was actually Jim Brittian’s too. Eliza’s father, Hawkins, and Jim Brittian were close. When Hawk died, he was buried on Jim Brittian’s land. Hawk, my gr.gr.gr. grandfather, was the first buried there. Jim Brittian was the second. Now there are about 70 or 80 graves in Brittian Cemetary in Harlan Co, KY. It’s right off Highway 987 near Martin’s Fork.
March 10, 2006 at 3:56 am #19906Aubrey,
I forgot to say, there are many many Hensley’s in Brittian Cemetary. At least 20 or so as I can remember. And that’s just from the names on the “marked” graves. Many are just field stones with no markings, or at least none on there now. I’m sure Hawk’s and Jim Brittian’s grave are one of these unmarked ones. There’s one flat spot on an otherwsie steep slope of the hillside cemetary. There’s a cedar tree growing on that one flat spot. Since Hawk and Jim Brittian were the first two buried there, I’d assume they are one of 6 or so graves marked only with field stones on that flat spot!

I agree with what you are saying and do believe that you are probaly right, However I am trying to get some type of verificartion as to my g-fathers , father and also on his father as he was suppose to have been taken from his parents and adopted by a family in Va. The story in family was he was taken after a battle, (found hiding in some weeds or something like that. Also it is rumored in the family that he was fathered by a Bledsoe. So far I have been unable to locate a recorded birth for him as the court houses in Harlan Co Ky and Lee Co Va were burned. Also I would like to find out who Hawkins Bowman Parents were and his wife Nancy Barbour and back as far as I can.But with Hawkins being an indian that is hard to do.
Again I say thakns for the info you have given me.

Hawkins Bowman was probably m’d at least three times.
On the 1840 Perry Co Ky census, his wife is in her 40’s but this is probably Elizabeth MASON, who he m’d 25 Dec 1838 in Harlan Co., Ky, m’d by John Lewis, Justice of the Peace.
So, the children listed in his 1840 household aren’t all Elizabeth Mason’s children and there must have been an earlier wife.
On the 1850 Lee Co., Va census, his wife is Nancy, 36 yrs old, b. NC, who you’ve identified as Nancy Barbour.
1840 Perry Co., Ky Census, p.256 (adjoins Harlan Co)
Line 1:
Russel Bowman
1 male under 5
1 male 5 to 9
1 male 10 to 14
1 male 40 to 49
1 female 5 to 9
1 female 15 to 19
1 female 20 to 29
1 female 40 to 49
Line 5:
HAWK BOWMAN (indexed as ‘Hurnk’, actual record says ‘Hawk’ )
2 males under 5
1 male 5 to 9
1 male 10 to 14
1 male 15 to 19
1 male 40 to 49
1 female under 5
2 females 5 to 9
1 female 10 to 14
1 female 15 to 19
1 female 40 to 49
Line 13:
Alfred Bowman
1 male under 5
1 male 20 to 29
2 females 5 to 9
1 female 30 to 39
Alfred is probably Russel’s son.
Both moved to 1850 Polk Co., Iowa, census date 11 Sept, p.54A,
Alfred Bowman, 32, m, – , farmer, $800, Ky
Susanna, 30, f, – , Tenn
James, 11, m, – Ky
Jane, 9, f, – Mo
Russle, 7, m, -, Mo
George W., 2, – , Iowa
Margaret, 4/12, f, – , Iowa
also 1850 Polk, Ia, p.55A, 11 Sept:
Russel Bowman, 60, m, – , farmer, $0, SC
Elizabeth, 19, f, – , Ohio
Emily, 17, f, – , Ky
Sarah, 15, f, – , Ky
Altemira, 11, f, – , Ky
Andrew J., 7, m – , Mo
If you don’t have census records, let me know if you want more details on their families:
They moved and are on 1860 Le Sueur Co., Minn, Kasota Twp census, p.31 & 32.
In 1870, Alfred, Susan & Emily are living with Jane (Bowman) Hale on the Mendocino Co., Calif, Point Arena census, p. 39. Both Amos Hale, Jane’s husband, and Alfred are teamsters.
I think Hawk and Russel Bowman are related – brothers? I don’t know.
Hawkins Bowman and his children are listed as ‘M’ on the 1850 Lee Co., Va census while Nancy is ‘W’ but is listed as “I” on the 1870 census.
Hawk Boman (s.i.c.), and his entire family are listed as ‘W’ on the 1860 Harlan Co., Ky census, p.60, ennumerated by C. B. Brittain.
On the 1870 Harlan Co., Ky census, p.12, District 9, Hawkins Boman (s.i.c.) family and Eliza Cole’s family are all listed as “I” .
There are no adult males in Eliza Cole’s household and the census listings for John Cole may explain why…. his age.
1850 Knox Co., Ky, 15 Aug, p.339B, family 280:
John COLE, 52, m, M, farmer, $250, NC
Eliza, 15, f, M, Va.
Emanuel, 13, m, M, Va
John, 12, m, M, Va.
Harrison, 11, m, M, Va
Elizabeth, 8, f, M, Ky
Anderson, 6, m, M, Ky
Jefferson, 4, m, M, Ky
Elvey, 12, f, M, Va (Elvira)
1860 Lee Co., Va Census, Western District, family 342:
John COAL (s.i.c.), 61, m, Ind, farmer, $0, $71, Linkham (s.i.c.) NC
Eliza, 18, f, Ind, Scott Va (this s/b new wife Eliza Bowman)
Elisabeth, 15, f, Ind, Knox Ky (this s/b his dau, 8 yrs old in 1850)
Jacob, 2, m, Ind, Lee Va
Elvira, 1, f, Ind, Lee Va.
( ‘Linkham’ if probably Lincoln Co., NC.
All were listed as Indian. )
Re: the 1888 Harlan Tax List showing a John Cole with 5 children.
The 1870 Harlan Co census, Pct. 2, family 62, lists
COLE, John, 45, m, W, farmer, $0, $14, Va
…….., Martha, 35, f, W, Va
…….., George, 10, m, W, Va
…….., Noble, 8, m, W, Va
…….., Mary J., 2/12, f, W, Va
1880 Harlan Co census, Dist. 47, Pct 2, p.522A, family 429:
Cole, John; W, m, 50, laborer, Va, Va, Va.
……., Martha; W, f, 46, wife, Va, Va, Va.
……., George; W, m, 20, son, Ky, Va, Va.
……., Noble; W, m, 16, son, Ky, Va, Va.
……., Mary; W, f, 9, dau, Ky, Va, Va
……., Albert; W, m, 5, son, Ky, Va, Va.
……., Lucretia; W, f, 1, dau, Ky, Va, Va.
This may be the John Cole on the 1888 tax list and he is clearly (at least to me) not the same John Cole who m’d Eliza Bowman.
Bill
