Thomas Gibson B-1720 D-1802 wife’s name not listed ??, his son Archibald Gibson B-1750 D-?, wife’s name not listed??, his son Martin Gibson B-1775 NC D-1840 KY, wife Eleanor Unknown, his son George Gibson B-1813 Perry, KY D-1862 Buchanan, VA, married Mary “Polly” Daniel 1831, Perry KY. Any info on the Native or African background would be greatly appreciated. Early censuses do not list race and the later ones show them as white. I would also like to find more information on the wives.

March 30, 2006 at 9:44 pm #20066Yes, and I’m still trying to verify that Martin’s wife Eleanor was a Davis and Arichibald’s wife was Vashti Cole.
March 30, 2006 at 9:44 pm #20067I think you are in the right place if you are looking for NA Gibsons.
March 30, 2006 at 9:44 pm #20070Bill,
Thanks, I don’t know how you keep up with all the requests, and give such detailed information too. I keep coming accross more information all the time, it is hard sometimes to decipher it all. I have seen Vashti listed as Basheba also. Do you know her ancestry? It is a Beautiful name. I have found such wonderful historical information on this site, I really enjoy reading it all.

March 30, 2006 at 9:44 pm #20071Yes, I too think this is a great site, and even if I were not looking for my NA ancestry, I would still enjoy all the historical info contained here.

March 30, 2006 at 9:44 pm #200971787 Henry Co., Va – Tax List “B”
(Based on the people on this section of the list, this would have been an area just north of Stokes/Surry Co’s NC, and by 1790 many of these families were living in Wilkes/Stokes/Surry Co’s NC)
4/21/1787
Archaball GIPSON
0 white males 16 to 21.
0 blacks above 16.
1 black under 16.
4 horses, mares, colts & mules.
8 cattle.
Archibald would have been about 28 or 29, so would not have met any of the above criteria except as Head of Family.
(Rowland Chiles was his next door neighbor)
(There is a possibility that we are missing a generation of Gibsons and it would then look like this:
Archabald/Thomas jr/Thomas Gibson, prob. the Thomas of 1740s Orange Co., Va
or this:
Archabald/Archabald Sr/Thomas of Orange Co)
The only COLE listed for 1787 Henry County is
Walter King COLE, a Doctor, visited on 6/5/1787 and listed on Tax List “A”

In 1799, Ashe County was created from a part of Wilkes Co., NC
1800 Ashe Co., NC Census; Morgan Twp, p.78, ennumerated as “All Other Free Persons” :
Arch’d GIBSON; 7 O.F.
Ezekiel GIBSON; 3 O.F.
Joel GIBSON; 2 O.F.
Judging from their their position on this census list, the following families lived in the same area:
Vadery (Vardy) COLLINS; 4 Other Free.
Valentine COLLINS; 6 O.F.
Ambrose COLLINS; 4 O.F.
Benjamin GRIMES; 1 O.F.
Andrew GIBSON; 7 O.F.
Stephen REID; 6 O.F.
James REID; 6 O.F.

Everyone went flying off in all different directions after 1800 and I’m still trying to piece it together, but here is an overview:
1810 Floyd Co., Ky census; p.99:
Archibald Gibson (26 to 44 yrs old – maybe yours if he’s over 45)
Ezekiel Gibson (over 45)
1810 Wayne Co., Ky census; p.362:
Arch’d Gibson (16 to 25)
George Gibson ((26 to 44)
1810 Pulaski Co., Ky census; p.148:
John Gibson (over 45 yrs old)
MARTIN GIBSON (16 to 25)
William Gibson (over 45)
1810 Clay Co., Ky census; p.150:
William Gibson (over 45)
From the listed age ranges, you can appreciate the challenge.
More later,
Bill
March 30, 2006 at 9:44 pm #20103Bill,
Thanks, it’s alot of information to sort through. I will check into the Elisha Baldin, I have found that these families lived in and around the same area. Looks like our ancestors may have been neighbors. Here is a web address I came across, some interesting info, but not complete, and/or some names are different. Yes, this geneology jungle is a challenge, but is well worth it.

March 30, 2006 at 9:44 pm #20117Shirley,
Do you have Celia Adkins parents as
Squire Adkins, b.abt. 1818 and Mary Anderson, b.abt. 1816, dau of David Anderson, b. abt. 1794, and Jane, b.abt. 1794 ?
Bill
March 30, 2006 at 9:44 pm #20150Bill,
I am unsure of Celia’s parentage, though one of her children was named Squire. Here is the family tree:
Celia Adkins
Born: 27 Mar 1844
Died: 29 Jan 1902
John Floyd Baldwin
Born: 27 Dec 1851
Died: 25 Sep 1934
Children:
James Harvey Baldwin M 7 Jun 1872 (GGGrandfather)
Squire Baldwin M 27 Mar 1876
Louise Church F 17 Jul 1880
Robert Baldwin M 21 Mar 1883
I have checked the 1850 census and 1860 and had no luck finding a Celia that matched her Birth. In the 1860 there was an Absolom and Delila Adkins:
Name: Celia Adkins
Age in 1860: 14
Birth Year: abt 1846
Birthplace: Kentucky
Home in 1860: District 1, Morgan, Kentucky
Gender: Female
Household Members: Name Age
Absalom Adkins 60
Delila Adkins 50
Miles Adkins 25
Lewis Adkins 21
William R Adkins 19
Linsey Adkins 24
Peter Adkins 16
Celia Adkins 14
Hazelrigg Adkins 10
John F Adkins 1
March 30, 2006 at 9:44 pm #20177Well, keep this one in mind:
1860 Buchanan Co., Va Census; 27 July; P.O: Grundy; p.36; Family 230: (birth state is blank, but later census show VA except for Squire born in Ky)
Squire ADKINS, 42, m, – ; farmer; $0, $45
Mary……………, 44, f, – ,
James…………., 21, m, –
Nancy…………., 18, f, –
CELIE…………., 16, f, – *******
Jane ANDERSON, 69, f, –
Elizabeth……….., 24, f, –
Jane and Elizabeth Anderson appear to be the following:
1850 Tazewell Co., Va Census; Western District; Family 937:
David ANDERSON, 56, m, – , farmer, $0, Va.
JANE………………., 56, f, – , Va. ****
Diline (?)…………., 17, f, – , Va.
BETSY…………….., 14, f, -, Va ****
Rebecca…………., 23, f, – , Va.
David C……………, 4, m, – , Va.
Wm. T…………….., 2, m, – , Va.
=======================
I haven’t checked this out but you might want to look at the following information in a posted family tree listing Squire Adkins as b. 1817/18 Ky, marr’d abt. 1837 in Russell Co., Va., Mary Anderson, b.abt. 1816/17 Va, d.abt. 1880 Buchanan Co, Va., dau of David Anderson, b.abt. 1794 Va, d. abt. 1853 Tazewell Co., Va, and Jane Hackney, b.abt. 1794 Va, d. 1870 Buchanan Co., Va.
…..
Same tree lists Squire Adkins as the son of James W. Adkins, b.abt. 1785 Giles Co., Va, d. abt. 1870 Pike Co., Ky, and Nancy Agness Bishop, b.abt. 1795 Giles Co., Va, d.abt. 1870 (?) Pike Co., Ky.

March 30, 2006 at 9:44 pm #20193Bill,
Found this link with the Buchanan County 1860 census, looks like all the family names are there. There are half a dozen pages to sort through, but I found Squire with Celia listed as daughter. Just below their names is a couple of Andersons. Looks like this must be the family. On this link I also found James and Hulda Gibson, George and Sarah Gibson. I saw my Thomas surname, as well as Baldwin, and Shortridge; I have to believe they are the ones. I don’t know how I missed these names in the census, thanks. There are a few names on this census I have seen posted on the forum.

For Sue:
Thanks for the link, looks like it is the right Squire Adkins. Much to look into. Thanks again.

March 30, 2006 at 9:44 pm #20203Household # 187 is the closest I’ve come to finding John Floyd Baldwin. The ‘Elihu’ is ‘Elisha’ on the digital image of the actual record and Elisha and Elizabeth BALDEN are on the 1850 census, as born in “Grayson Co Va” . Elizabeth is ‘supposed to be’ a LACY.
This Elisha is alledgedly the son of Elisha Baldwin, b.abt. 1755 in the Morgan District of Wilkes Co., NC, d.abt. 1813 Ashe Co., NC, reportedly marr’d to Jane Landreth, b.abt. 1772 Wilkes Co., but while that seems likely I don’t have anything to prove it.
Elizabeth Lacy is supposedly the dau of Elliot Lacy and Lois Brown but those dates are the figment of someone’s imagination or a severe case of typoes, since ya’ can’t have kids if yer dead.

March 30, 2006 at 9:44 pm #20205There are still Gibsons present in Wilkes County in 1810.
GIBSON p. 260

The links for 1790 and 1800 for Wilkes County aren’t working. Bill, do you have a different link for these?

There is also a Thomas Collins on the 1800 Ashe Co. Census, he is listed as 1 O.F.
There are three Baldwins too…Stephen, William, and John, listed as white.
There are some Collins and Baldwins still there in 1810 as well.
