Thought I would post the 1860 Buchanan Co. census, as many of the surnames listed above are within. My Gibson, Baldwin, Adkins, Anderson, Hackney etc.. as well as those Laurie has above, such as Davis, Conley, Deel, Mullins and Nickles. In addition, I have seen many of the surnames listed on the census posted on this site. It seems you can follow these families from NC to KY to VA…

Archibald would have been about 28 or 29, so would not have met any of the above criteria except as Head of Family.

Archabald/Thomas jr/Thomas Gibson, prob. the Thomas of 1740s Orange Co., Va

Everyone went flying off in all different directions after 1800 and I’m still trying to piece it together, but here is an overview:
1810 Floyd Co., Ky census; p.99:
Archibald Gibson (26 to 44 yrs old – maybe yours if he’s over 45)
Ezekiel Gibson (over 45)
1810 Wayne Co., Ky census; p.362:
Arch’d Gibson (16 to 25)
George Gibson ((26 to 44)
1810 Pulaski Co., Ky census; p.148:
John Gibson (over 45 yrs old)
MARTIN GIBSON (16 to 25)
William Gibson (over 45)
1810 Clay Co., Ky census; p.150:
William Gibson (over 45)
From the listed age ranges, you can appreciate the challenge.
More later,
Bill
Bill,
Sometimes I go through all this information so quickly, I miss what could be an answer; I am refering to Martin Gibson’s father.
We know from Carlson’s dissertation, Martin was closely linked with Valentine Tiny Collins group.
A few of his boy’s names are Andrew, Martin, George (mine), and I believe Joel.
In the 1800 Ashe county census you list above, you listed a group living close together. This group:
Vadery (Vardy) COLLINS; 4 Other Free.
Valentine COLLINS; 6 O.F.
Ambrose COLLINS; 4 O.F.
Benjamin GRIMES; 1 O.F.
Andrew GIBSON; 7 O.F.
Stephen REID; 6 O.F.
James REID; 6 O.F.
The only Gibson living near Valentine (assuming this is a longstanding relationship) is Andrew. And being Martin named one of his children Andrew, which it was common to name one’s child after one’s self.
What do you think? Am I losin’ it?:)

There were ten Collins families on the 1820 census. Valentine, Bradley,

My Martin Gibson was born abt. 1776, bound out to James Carrington in
Orange County, NC 1784 along with sisters Dicey and Susannah (Susannah
chooses James Carrington). Later Martin is in Wilkes Co, NC circa
1794-1797, 1802 Russell Co VA, 1806 Smith Co TN, 1808 Russell Co VA,
1820’s Perry Co, KY, where he dies abt 1833. His wife is Eleanor?
Martin’s children immigrate to Tazewell Co, VA shortly after his death,
in the area that becomes Buchanan Co, VA, some years later go into
different counties of West Virginia. I have all but one son figured out.
Martin’s parents remain unknown although it is suspected to be old
William Gibson of Orange Co, NC who is too old to be taxed during the
revolution.

March 30, 2006 at 9:44 pm #27802I’m a newbie to the forum, but was fascinated by some of the Gibson info. Have been researching eastern KY Civil War for years and am in the process of finishing Vol. I of what a friend & I hope to be a 3-volume history of the war in the Big Sandy valley of east KY. For Vol II, there’s a mystery I trust someone on the forum can help solve.
In March 1862, future president James A. Garfield was commanding the 18th Union Brigade camped in Pikeville, KY. A woman came into town one morning and announced that Rebel renegades had hanged her husband. We have at least 2 or 3 contemporary accounts from soldiers who were in the force that pursued the band, and all agree the man was hanged 7 miles upriver from Pikeville, which would be at the mouth of Shelby Creek, present day Shelbiana.
Garfield’s surgeon, a Dr. Harman, wrote a piece for a Cleveland, OH paper wherein he stated the Rebels had hanged a Mr. Gibson, and put a bullet in the hip of his father, because Gibson refused to join their command. For years I thought the unfortunate man was Wesley Gibson, House #32, 1860 Pike Co., but later found his name was John Wesley and he was in later enumerations as John W. The other possibility is William Gibson, age 35, House #30, wife Hannah, and children: W.B., or William B., 18, who married Hannah Bartley in 1860 (where did you get the 15-children info, ma’am?); John, 14; Elijah, 11; Eseval, 6; Nelly, 8; James, 4; and David, 5/12; also a daughter, Elizabeth, who married Charles Helton (Hylton) just before the war, House #111. Eliga Gipson, House 26, with 2 teenage sons, is also a possibility.
I was deflated to find the WV William Gibson who matched in age and died in 1874 or so, but I think his birth state was WV, but I may be wrong. Anyway, I have a bit of circumstantial evidence to indicate the Pike Co. William above may be the answer to my years-old search.
Can anyone help?

Didn’t mean to be trite by asking where you got that info. I actually would like to pursue that line of the family since the William who married Ms. Bartley, who had 15 children, was actually the son of the William I long suspected to be the hanging victim. Where did they live in 1870 and beyond?
I’ve found this line of Gibsons to be extremely hard to track, as I’m sure others on this forum have also. My other possibility, Eliga, is listed as age 63 in 1860, but his wife Hannah is only 42, and they have a daughter, Priceller, who is 24, as well as sons 17 and 16. I think the age is a transcription error. Anyway, one of the boys died while in service with the 39th KY, US, and the other has eluded me entirely.
Back to William. Did his wife, Hannah, die sometime during or just after the war and he remarried? None of the children’s names match for the WV William, nor do the states of birth. My man in ’60 was listed as being born in KY.
Please, prove me wrong so I can give up on this guy and move on to another prospect. But, if I never find the victim, a good mystery is hard to beat.
Thanks for your response,
Randall

Steve-o,
I have wondered for a while if our Adkins are tied somewhere, but do not have enough on mine to know for sure.
March 30, 2006 at 9:44 pm #29592If the above Squire Adkins is your ancestor, then yes, you tie into my Adkins line. I am not quite sure where Squire fits in, but believe he descends from my William Adkins and Elizabeth Parker. I descend from the Adkins almost without any branches in the tree in that line.
William Adkins & Elizabeth Parker
Parker Adkins and Mary Bluesky Cornstalk
Little Berry Adkins & Nancy Adkins, d/o Mary Adkins (d/o Wm. & Elizabeth Parker Adkins) & Jacob (Harley)
Jesse Adkins & Nancy Adkins, d/o Sherrod Adkins (s/o Mary Adkins & Jacob (Harley)
Margaret Adkins & Daniel Jackson Skidmore/Watts (s/o Isaac Skidmore & Eleanore (Mills), widow of Elias Watts. Isaac Skidmore left and the children he had with Eleanore (Mills) Watts took on the Watts surname.
Everett Watts & Eleanore Roberts, d/o Alexander “Bird” Roberts & Susannah Wells
Volney Howard Watts & Mary Ann Adkins*
Thomas Benton Watts & Martha Louise Hale (Hale, Osburn, Ferguson, Skaggs descendant, ties into Castle/Casteel/Steele family). Her great great grandfather was Vinson Hale (& Jane Morgan) who’s daughter Delilah Hale married Henry Fleming Meadows, who can be found somewhere on this forum mentioned by another poster about being believed to have native roots. My Hale line is said to have native roots, I just cannot find out if they did or not because I am still trying to find the parents of Vinson Hale and Jane Morgan.
* Mary Ann Adkins was d/o Stanley Adkins & Ann Fry*. Stanley was s/o Brison Adkins & ? Brison’s mother may have been a Bryson.
* Ann Fry was d/o David Fry & Christina Adkins, d/o Little Berry Adkins & Nancy Adkins (above).
David Fry was George Peter Fry II & Mary Ann Johnston, d/o David Johnston and Nancy Abbott.
George Peter Fry II was s/o George Peter Fry I & Keziah Adkins, d/o Parker Adkins & Mary ? or Mary Bluesky Cornstalk (above).
George Peter Fry I was s/o George Fy and Margaret Scott
George Fry was s/o John Peter Fry & Catherine French. I also descend from French in my Clay line. My ancestress Obedience Clay, d/o Mitchell Clay & Phoebe Belcher married John French.
Squire Adkins in the above post is believed to have been related to Brison Adkins, and the line may trace to my William Adkins directly, or to possibly a brother of William Adkins. Being that Brison’s son Stanley married in Wayne Co. W.V., I feel there has to be a connection somehow to William Adkins & Elizabeth Parker based on everyone in Wayne and Cabell Counties appear to trace back to Wm. and Elizabeth.
I traced every male Adkins marriages between 1853 to 1900 in Wayne Co. and every male (over 200 + males) were descended from Wm. Adkins & Elizabeth Parker, and every female married, with the exception of 1 or 2 who I could find no information on, was an Adkins cousin who descended from William Adkins & Elizabeth Parker. So I feel pretty certain that Squire and my Brison Adkins fall into the same catagory.

Steve-O,
This is what Bill found for me on Squire:
1860 Buchanan Co., Va Census; P.O. Grundy; 27 July; p.36; H.H. # 230:
Squire ADKINS, 42, m, – , farmer, $0, $45, KY

CELIE……….., 16, f, – , Va
Jane ANDERSON, 69, f, – , no occupation, $0, $0, Va
Elizabeth………, 24, f, – , Va.
Squire Adkins, b.abt 1817/18 Ky (maybe Pike Co)
d.after 1900 Buchanan Co., Va;
m’d about 1837 Russell Co., Va
Mary Anderson, b.abt. 1816/17 Va
d. 1880 Buchanan Co., Va
(dau of David Anderson, b.abt.1794 Va; d.1853 Tazewell Co., Va; and
Jane Hackney, b.abt. 1794 Va, d. 1870 Buchanan Co., Va)
(In 1850, David and Jane with dau “Betsy”, 14, were living in Russell Co., Va)
(Both David’s and Jane’s mothers purported to be VAILs)
Squire’s parents:
James W. Adkins, b.abt. 1785 Giles Co., Va; d.aft. 1870 Pike Co., Ky
m’d Nancy Agness Bishop, b.abt. 1795 Giles Co., Va; d.after 1870 Pike Co., Ky. (Both are on the 1870 Pike Census, with Squire’s son Squire Jr living with them)
James W.’s father is purported to be James Atkinson (wife Mary_?_ ), b.1747 Va and d. 14 Apr 1837 – could be but I couldn’t prove it.
Squire’s daughter Celia married into my Baldwin (Balden) line from NC and VA

And if you go back further on Joel’s page you will find a William Adkins and Mary Perkins, click on the “unknown Adkins” child and you will find my Brison Adkins. I am soon going to be researching this Wm. Adkins and Mary Perkins as I am not certain yet on how this Wm. Adkins/Mary Perkins connects to my William Adkins & Elizabeth Parker, or if Joel is merely speculating a connection to the Adkins/Perkins line. “unknown Adkins” always leads me to believe the latter to be the case.

I did see Perkins on ancestry…on this Adkin’s tree. I will do some digging too, thanks.

March 30, 2006 at 9:44 pm #29610A couple researchers have William Adkins, h/o Mary Perkins, as the son of William Adkins & Elizabeth Parker, which seems to make sense, but I am still digging.
March 30, 2006 at 9:44 pm #29613If you have ancestry, the one world tree on this adkins line goes back quite far, but I am somewhat skeptical of the data, when no sources are given.
I think you said you have Anderson’s in your line??where do they come in? Mine mary into the adkins, see below.
JANE HACKNEY (daughter of John & Jane) was b-1794 d-1870-80 Buchanan Co. VA. m-3/8/1812 Giles Co. Va to David Anderson, (son of John and Nancy VAIL #1Ahl). He was born 1794 in Montgomery Co. VA d-1850-60 Tazewell Co? VA. They had eight known children:

***You’ll have to close your eyes when you get to the melungeon part…but there are many associated surnames and the Mullins are another associated family. Check out the first names Ambrose, Squire etal.
“A Brief History of Buchanan County” by Hannibal Albert Compton, March 1958…I had the opportunity to peruse this book while in Grundy ( a library reference book), really some good stuff!
Excerpt:
The Mullins’ first came to Buchanan County from Letcher County, Kentucky and from Wise County, Virginia. Some of those who came from Wise were from the part that is Dickenson County now. Old Tommy Mullins (William Thomas Mullins) was one of the earliest of the pioneers, who came here before the county was even thought about. He settled on the ridge between Slate Creek, Sprucepine and Harry’s Branch. Old Tommy performed marriage ceremonies and made his returns to the court at Jeffersonville, now Tazwell. (The history of Tazwell County has many, many marriages signed by Thomas Mullins.) He was the father of Preston Mullins, Ambrose, Bill, Squire, and Henderson, Old Wylie Stacy’s wife, Matilda, and aunt Daicy, the second wife of Henry Horn.
Some of the Mullins’ were skillful distillers and took great pride in their art. And will they might have, for Old Pres Mullins pure corn whiskey acted as a stimulant and a sedative at the same time, have the most soothing effect on tired nerves and muscles, bringing sleep to the insomulent, and wakefulness to the Drowsy. Old Pres lived to be a ripe old age. The last time I him he was in the late eighties, and was working for W.M. Ritter at their camp on Looney’s Creek. As long as I knew him he lived on the State Line Ridge, between Knox and Panther Creeks. Alert, but not alergic, he lived out his days in his own old haunts, in the elevated eerie, like an eagle, immune and aloft.
I just love reading this…you can just picture what went on…my father has shared stories with me…quite similar;)
I wish Bill were around, he was always so good at deducing good info from bad…I will keep looking…

March 30, 2006 at 9:44 pm #29615Apparently, some Adkins researchers feel that William Adkins, s/o Wm. & Elizabeth Parker Adkins, was married more than once, which could very well have happened. Mary, Mary, Mary, Mary. Mary…so many Marys involved in the Adkins line that it is almost overkill or something. They should have trademarked the name. Thatis always what throws myself and alot of other people into delusion at times and where actual marriage records help sort through the online misinformation.
But anyway, I know nothing on any Andersons in my Adkins lines…directly anyway. Anything past William Adkins (Elizabeth Parker) is speculative at best and may have stemmed from, and branched over to Ancestry, the LDS stating their “final word” on who William’s parents were. I have always had problems with LDS who just throw in whoever with whoever and thier faith’s adoption beliefs that if they adopt a name into their religious faith they will get into Heaven. Quite a few of my ancestors, that I know were actually my ancestors, were Baptist – Baptist Footwashers – etc. They were not Mormon.
But they state that their “final word” is based on the best fit. Well they have been “best fitting” for some time now, but that doesn’t mean they were right.
Go to the LDS site and look up my great grandfather Volney Watts and you will find they have him listed as a female.
Again, the point is, I am still uncertain as to who my William Adkins parents really were. Seeing that some researchers have his daughter, my ancestress, and Parker Adkins’ sister, Mary Adkins (Harley) as being born in the Jamestown Colony I looked at some early lists of names in the 1600’s of the colonists and found some Adkins who could have been William’s ancestors and it one day may prove to be the truth. But I really have no idea where that information came from unless it is based on the Earl Of Oxford family lore concerning Jacob (Harley).
If the DNA Adkins Project is true, but DNA has always been touchy with me for alot of reasons, the Slone family is said to share very similar DNA with my/our Adkins line. Enough that they mention it on the project site. There are pictures online of Powhatan/Chickahominy Adkins natives that I found not too long ago. One of them was named Littleberry. So that along with the vestry book stating a William Adkins requesting permission to go to the Chickahominy for medical help still makes me wonder if there wasn’t some sort of ties to the Powhatan and/or Chickahominy in my Adkins line. But that really can only be answered by finding whom my William Adkins’ parents were and not basing things on what is the “best fit”.
Some researchers have Squire born in 1817, so the 1818 date may be off by a year. Ambrose was a fairly common name for the time, so I cannot base anything off of that. Quite a few, apparently unrelated, Watts had the first name of Ambrose. Squire could come from either the Squire surname or the English royalty title as well. It is truely hard to make any clear statement based on those first names. For instance, the name Shirley originally was a male name. There is actually a male Adkins buried in Wayne Co. with the first name of Shirley who is somehow connected directly with a female 2nd cousin of mine name Shirley Adkins…I am sure LDS would have a field day with that one.
I just cannot see how there would be one Adkins in Wayne Co., out of over 200 that connect, not being related to William Adkins & Elizabeth Parker in some way. My hunch is that if my Brison Adkins is descended from William Adkins & Mary Perkins, then it is quite possible that Wm. & elizabeth’s known son by the name of William was married more than once. But Brison could “best fit” as the child of a few Wm. & Elizabeth descendants.
As far as the Hackney/Anderson marriage information above goes, this is the first I have seen this information so I cannot comment on it in any knowledgeable fashion. There are only 2 Andersons linsted in my marriage book between 1853 and 1900, so if they palyed any role in my Adkins lines, it was minimal at best.

Steve,
All I can say is thanks for sending my funny bone into a dither…lol…I do look at associated family names and how they name their children…it is how, I have managed to stumble over as much info on my family, as I have. I do love to laugh, though! You have to or the Mary’s will get you!
Just thought on my part, that if their was a connection at the adkins…there might be a connection at the Anderson’s, oh well miss.
My George Gibson was one of the 31 memebers of the primitive Baptist church, Tazewell (I think), I know all about the foot washing. When searching for my gggrandmother Isabelle Rosina Gibson…never thought to look for Lbby, or my greatgrandmother Celie B…listed on the censs as a boy, well, she was only 18 months old, who would know??
I enjoy your posts…keep them coming. I will see if I can find anything, we haven’t seen yet.
