In the 1880 census it shows a james Baldwin, father john, mother Nancy. I think this is the family, as they are located in Hawkins County. I think the family was from Blackwater, Tennessee, which I think is near this area. I am not for sure, what do you think?

March 30, 2006 at 9:44 pm #20257Bill,
You are absolutely right, you have them there. The family must have lived in Buchanan county for a long time. I am heading East this summer and may make a special trip to the area; see what I can find… Thanks for finding them. I would still like to find just where the Native roots come in, but it all takes time. Thanks again.

March 30, 2006 at 9:44 pm #23167Hello Shirley….all! *waves* I decided to post here about what I know tell of this line of Gibsons and Coles rather than on Shirley’s reply link re: the Carmel Indians of Highland County, OH. First of all…thank you Shirley for replying and yes…I have heard of the Cole Nation…if you are in fact referring to the Cherokee Coles out in Oklahoma…they are very well documented as being Cherokee and yes, some of them do connect to my lines one way or another. As a group, I have not examined them extensively as I have been primarilly interested in trying to discern my early KY/NC/VA Cole connections to my Nichols and Gibson lines. Richard Carlson is very knowledgeable about that particular line and there is a lovely gal named Irene Cole Farmer who I speak with regularly who is also an exceptional Cole researcher…I can certainly ask her about Vashti/Basheeba next time we phone chat. *wink*
In requards to your Arch Gibson line…I already had in my tree, 4 men with that name variant: 1. Archelous b: 1763 MD Sarah Sumner. 2. Archelous b: 1789 MD Polly Begley 3. Archibald b: 1782 MD Priscilla Cecil & 4. Archibald b: 1822 MD Jane Rogers. Based on that info…I think there was yet another “Arch” Gibson entirely unless one of them MD another wife in Vashti/Basheeba Cole. When I read down your descendany I noticed that your Arch’s son : Martin Gibson “clang a bell” for me…especially given the census data posted by Bill referencing the neighbors…to explain: I DO have a Martin Gibson I show as being born in 1776 in Orange Co, NC and although I did not have parents attached to him…I DID have him as having 2 sisters: Dicey/Pricey and Susannah. I have no data on his sister Susannah BUT….his sister Dicey, also called Pricey did marry, of all people: Valentine “Vol” Collins! Valentine being b: 1768 in Wilkes Co, NC son of Samuel Collins and an UNK Vardeman gal (They being the parents of the above reply mentioned Vardemon “Vardy” Collins , for whom Vardy Springs and Vadry Valley etc were so named and undoubtedly one of the most infamous “Melungeons”). As to Valentine & Dicey’s CH, I have 6 listed so far (but rumor has it he fathered a total of 24 *gasp* children!)…those I account for are: 1. Obedience “Biddy (MD William Cole, 11 issue) 2. Joshua Collins (MD Elizabeth Dale issue 7 CH) 3. Otery “Otra” (MD Frances Nichols issue 6 CH) 4. Meredith (very difficult to discern who he may have MD…the “jury” is still out on him.) 5. Bradley (no known info re: marriage or issue) & 6. David ( MD Polly Dale issue 6 CH).
As to your Thomas Gibson…that is a name I have plenty of in my tree…and by dates…the closest one I could possibly connect him as being would be a Thomas Gibson b: abt 1718…he being the son of Thomas Gibson b: 1691 in St. Martin’s , Hanover Co, VA d: 1734 DO who MD: Mary Frances Allen b: UNK date in St. Martin’s and who perhaps not coincidentally died the same year as her husband. I show their CH as being: 1. Mary Gibson (MD Moses Riddle, 7 issue) 2. Frances (MD an UNK Hundey/Hundrey, no known issue) 3. John (no known MG or issue) 4. Valentine (MD Elizabeth F. Garrett 11 issue) and Thomas mentioned above…who I (don’t hold me to this please) SUSPECT may have married Martha Riddle in 1774 in Goochland Co, VA…just a hunch of mine that I tossed in my notes…but given the Gibson and other allied names connections to the Riddle/Ridley’s….it would not suprise me at all.
I did not even have Vashti/Basheeba Cole in my tree and nor did I have her father Levin Cole…if I can procurew a definative connection from Thomas to Thomas to Arch to my Martin then I’ll do so…please give me your thought/opinions on these folks too….and by all means BILL>…chime in and help a girl out Sir!!!
Also perhaps worthy of mention is that there was an Ezekial Gibson who was the son of Valentine Gibson & Elizabeth Frances nee Garrett….and he MD a gal named Rachel Terry and I do not have their CH indexed yet but noted that they did have 11 issue.
One more thing…I have numerous Baldwin’s…but my line connect to my paternal line and were of Quaker descent…originating in VA and PA and moving to OH whereby they MD into my Whitacre/Kelly surnames.
Jinkies….I hope we can sort this crew out and make more connections too…it would be right nice to be able to MERGE a few more ppl! Blessings to all from here to there….keep up the good work~~~~Laurie

I would really like to figure out who Mary Frances Allen belongs to. My Allen’s are in the deeds of Hanover co Robert with son Joseph signing…Joseph is my direct line. Robert is his father. I wonder if she fits in here somewhere. I have never found everything out about Joseph. I saw that Thomas Gibson’s will doesn’t mention a wife but if she died before him it wouldn’t.

Wow Laurie, you have done your homework! The Thomas, Archibald, Martin Gibson info came from another cousin. Her ggggrandfather and mine were brothers (John and Calvin Gibson). I do believe that Thomas’s father was Thomas also; your information is great. To see the names Collins, Riddles etc, makes it very relevent. I will check with Debbie to see if she has anything new. Thanks Laurie for sharing; I can imagine this will be helpful to others as well.

The Cousin who gave me the info about Arch being Martin’s father emailed me and said, Archibald is not Martin’s father according to long time Archibald researchers. I know she has been trying to find proof of a connection, however it looks as if there is yet another snag. Not much information is found on Martin, some things in Floyd, co. where he is listed as Mulatto, with wife Eleanor White, land grants etc. The dates for Thomas, Arch, Martin, etc all line up (as if they could be father-son-son). Just have to keep smiling and dig some more.

What do you mean by “Moses Riddle, 7 issue”?
Are you saying that Mary Gibson might have had a brother named Thomas who may have married a Martha Riddle? (I am not holding you to this, I just want to clarify what you are suspecting…)
BTW, Blackwater is right there near Kyle’s Ford in Hawkins County (maybe it is Hancock County now…I can’t remember). If you guys and gals ever get the chance, look at topographic maps of the area. I have TOPO CD’s from National Geographic that are awesome…you can see the ridgelines and it is very clear how people travelled and how easy it is to get from Blackwater Church in KY to Kyle’s Ford in TN. It is basically over a ridge or two.

Howdy Rockhound: ) This family is awesomely confusing! LOL…I just love the challenge of trying to sort things out …color me daft or just plain geeky sleuthish but in just the past weekend I have found SOOOOO very much more on thsi family…will post later today after I source everything and do some more comparative census diggign myself….sorry to digress…forgive me….to reply to your Q’s: what I mean is that she married Moses Riddle and they had 7 children (issue was some old world term for that and I catch myself using it as a quick phrase to avoid more letters when typing!) And…yes! Mary had a brother named Thomas, who was born about 1718 and it is purely MY personal suspicion that he may be the same Thomas Gibson who married a gal named Martha Riddle…in all likelihood, she being fromt he same family….we ALL know how oft that happened that sibs would marry into a same surname family because of lifestyle and locale issues of the time.
Thanks so much for clarifying the proximity of the area for me/us….I live in OH and have never jaunted that way much…and I have high hopes of some day doign so but….time and tides will tell as they say! Take great care…keep teh interest and topic at bay…more later today from thsi geeky researcher! Blessings for now~~~~Laurie
March 30, 2006 at 9:44 pm #23179Thanks for clearing that up.
If you want to look at maps of the area, simply do a google search for topo maps online or use topozone.com. I have also found that for some reason Mapquest has a lot of little old towns that no longer exist that show up when you search for them…I am not sure where they get the information, but these little towns (sometimes nothing more than a post office from 150 years ago) show up.
I look forward to seeing what you have found. I hope you are referring to the Riddle side…:)
March 30, 2006 at 9:44 pm #23181Howdy y’all! *waves* Well…I did some more census and other “digging” and poured ove rmy notes and links…and lo and behodl there actually IS quite a bit of information “out there” on Martin Gibson and his descendants…key word being descendants…there is still quite the mystery as to whom his parents coudl have been…some folks speculate it was a William Gibson who was too “old to be bound out” on certain VA taxables lists…others speculate it may have been a George Gibson who died the very year that Martin was born….and so it goes….it may be right tricky to find out just who his daddy was but….one thing I wanted to mention about the whole melee is that I personally find it most interesting that no one mentions the name Zachariah Gibson as a potential father (or maybe even brother) to Martin (and Susannah, Dicey/Pricey)….his name appears as a next door neighbor to Martin on 2 back to back census records…I think he bears further examination to determine HOW he connects to Martin. The unfortunate thing is that his age by way of a “tick” mark is not able to be seen in either of those census records. The only Zachariah Gibson I have in my tree that comes close in age (and could thus be a potential sibling to Martin, etc) is Zachariah b: 1821 in TN or VA who was the son of Joseph Fisher & Susannah “Sookey” Gibson….I show their CH born in VA/TN between years 1807 and 1830….so it is perhaps somewhat possible that Martin, and Dicey and Susannah (there is THAT name again) could have been their children yes?! Those CH MD into surnames: Gibson, Collins, Mullins & Alsept.
So to recap potential names tossed as teh father of Martin: Archibald, William, Thomas, George, and just maybe some Zachariah??? I wish I knew what place to even look further to see who it could be….any help further would be just greatly appreciated. (hint hint)
I hope I am not being redundant now, but I wanted to post additional information I have on Martin Gibson and his descendants, he being born in 1776 abt…in most likely Orange Co, NC The general consensus seems to be that whoever hsi father was, he passed away in about the same year that Martin was born…there are numerous onlien references to he and his 2 sisters being “bound out”…as such:”Martin Gibson was born abt. 1776, bound out to James Carrington in Orange
County, NC 1784 along with sisters Dicey and Susannah (Susannah chooses
James Carrington).” (Source: located Sept 2006 from PAF @ AWTP: Gibson/Conley/Deal,owner: Suzan Heil)
The above mentioned ancestral file contains extensive notes and sources…Suzan has a wealth of information on this family…her last known email addy is: suzanheil@sbcglobal.net
Her personal notes on Martin Gibson Sr are as follows:

Thanks and I wonder if Debbie is still on the list. That’s what I was

always thought she might be same Dicey as Valentine Collins wife.

He is listed on the 1820 and 1830 Floyd County census and had land in

Company B – Captain Gordon W. Rife’s Company (Previously Company F(2), 21st Battalion, Infantry and for a short time Company F(1), 64th Virginia Infantry). This company was formed, at an undetermined date, primarily from residents of Buchanan County. Gordon Rife previously served in the 34th Battalion Virignia Cavalry, and was obstensably detailed to gather deserters from that unit when he organized this company. Several men who served under Rife were deserters from the 34th, and its enigmatic leader, Vincent A. Witcher.
Officers were:
Gordon W. Rife, Captain
Jeremiah Gibson, 1st Lieutenant
John W. Wolhford, 2nd Lieutenant
Berry Compton, 2nd Lieutenant
Alfred Breeding, 2nd Lieutenant – Killed in Action”

Notes for her as such:
“Decended from the prominent Melungeon Gibson’s who were pioneer settlers
of K entucky and North Carolina. The family moved to Clay Co WV about 1854
but mov ed back to Buchanan Co Va before 1860. After the civil war they
returned to C lay CoWV and are found in the 1870 and 1880 Clay Co WV
cenus. No two records agree on the year of birth for either Thomas or
Matilda, with Thomas ranging between about 1819 and 1827, Matilda’s
recorded ages would put her nirth betw een about 1825 and 1835. Because of
the marriage date it would seem that neit her Thomas nor Matilda were
likely to have been born later than 1819.”

Perhaps one of the most wonderful “finds” was one I located months ago when researching a great grand niece of Martins Gibson Sr.’s: her name was George Ann Gibson…and Jack Goins, prominent Melungeon researcher linked me to a page of his that had some pics of her….that link can be found at URL:
http://jgoins.com/kit_11280.htm
It is a very neat and informative linky loo….and the pics at the bottom of the page are in my mind, just TREASURES! I highly recommend reading it in it’s entirety and co-linking to Jack’s other pages and doing likewise. His research speaks volumes re: our “Melungeon” /Saponi/Cherokee/Brown People/Carmel Indians! We *may* not all *agree* with “everything Melungeon” BUT…there is much much to learn from the core Melungeon research/ers.
Sorry to be so dern “wordy” and take up so dern much message board space…but there is plenty to post anon! Blessings from here to there…wherever all y’all are! ~~~~~~~~~~~Laurie
March 30, 2006 at 9:44 pm #23185Laurie,
It s funny you should mention Debbie, for she is the cousin I have gotten most of my Martin info from, Our 3xgrandfather’s were brothers (John & Calvin). I find it interesting that George Gibson could have been Martin’s father, as Martin’s son George (could be named after grandfather?) is my 4xgrandfather. I applaud you for all this welcome information Laurie, thanks. I will dig around for George Gibson and see what I can find and yes, any help would be greatly appreciated.
Shirley
To add to your second about Floyd Co. KY, Martin’s son George was b. in Perry, KY 1813 and m. Mary Polly Daniel in Floyd, Co.
BlondeyeLaurie wrote: Howdy y’all!

Sarah,
Thanks and I wonder if Debbie is still on the list. That’s what I was
thinking that they might be children of George who died in 1776, since George and
Thomas were apparently neighbors of James Carrington’s father, John
Carrington. Since Martin went to Wilkes County possibly so did his sister Dicey..
always thought she might be same Dicey as Valentine Collins wife.

This Martin Gibson is Debbie S. Dehart’s Gibson line. She posted the
following:
My Martin Gibson was born abt. 1776, bound out to James Carrington in Orange
County, NC 1784 along with sisters Dicey and Susannah (Susannah chooses
James Carrington). Later Martin is in Wilkes Co, NC circa 1794-1797, 1802 Russell
Co VA, 1806 Smith Co TN, 1808 Russell Co VA, 1820’s Perry Co, KY, where he
dies abt 1833. His wife is Eleanor?
Martin most likely comes out of the Saponi Gibson’s who come from Orange Co,
VA to Orange Co, NC. Father could be old William who is too old and infirm
to be taxed, or possibly from George who d. 1776 Orange Co, NC. Other children
are named for George, but does not include Martin, Dicey or Susannah on the
lists in Caswell Co, NC. Suggested Next Step:
