Chief Walt Brown of the Cheroenhaka Nottoway has asked me to please point out that there are now two different groups using the Nottoway name. There is the Cheroenhaka Nottoway Indian tribe, which is holding its Sixth Annual Pow Wow in JULY on the 21st and 22nd. Their website is at http://www.cheroenhaka-nottoway.org. Anyone interested in the type of steps a tribe can make in pursuing state or federal recognition will find this site very interesting.
There is another, newer group called the Nottoway of Virginia which is holding their first pow wow in JUNE. I know I was confused myself by this.

Hwy. 95 South past Petersburg to Exit # 41,
(the Courtland exit (Rt. 35)). Travel 32 Miles
on Route 35 to Courtland, come through town
and take a left on Hwy 58 East toward Franklin,

I think attending either pow wow would be an awesome experience….that area of Virginia is rich in heritage and good feelings. If we weren’t planning on being at Stagville on Saturday, we would be at Nottoway.
Well, we were blessed to attend Nottoway on Saturday. It was hot, but, the dancing was good…and the feelings there were good. Saw a lot of old friends, too. And watched a bonding as well. Looking forward to going to that one again….the location was just perfect. Next year it would be nice to stay on for Sunday.
Hey! We made it to the Nottoway pow-wow in Surry on Sunday. Despite being exhausted (my nephew married an Italian the day/night before) and hot, we enjoyed it immensely. I think it’s what propelled us home.
Our trip was filled with unexpected treasures. Routed ourselves so we could see the Saponi marker (in Danville, not too far from us) on the way up. Just picked a road seemingly at random to lead home after the pow-wow & happened upon Sapony Creek (not on our map) and Sapony Church (Dinwiddie County). We took pictures, but someone else has some pix online already, here:

I was wondering how the pow wow went Sunday. Emotions were high on Saturday. Did you meet any of the vendors? Most of the ones there you will see on the pow wow circuit.
We took the route posted on the website…and saw new things…and crossed many rivers and creeks. But, will only use that highway (40) for straight driving…no places to stop for breaks. Highway 58 is better for that…but, the cross country connections can be a bit of a bear at night since the roads don’t have white lines and have many curves.
I know what you mean about the nap…I don’t think I have caught up yet….that was a long drive for one day.
We visited the vendors a little bit. Saw that one was from Pfafftown (near us). She does some very nice work. A couple of vendors were familiar, including one that Sandy is especially drawn to. One day we will buy a drum from her, but not after a weekend in William$burg. ;~) Found the kind of Pocahontas t-shirt Jamestown was not selling (smirk), created by Rose Powhatan. Boy, does she have some wonderful designs!
I think 40 was the little road we took that led to Sapony Creek and Church, before connecting to 85 & then to 58. Got to see an awesome “light show” in the sky on the home stretch, and came home to no electricity.
Have you guys ever been to that little old Sapony church? I thought of you when I was taking pictures of all the graves. A couple of them had rather interesting markers.
No, I have no visited that church…that’s the first time we had been that way. We usually travel 58.
If you make it to Cheroenhaka, we will need to introduce you to some more vendor friends we know. There is one that I think you will want to sit and talk to…the ladies love him.
Oh, I’d love to go to Cheroenhaka. But also want to go to the get-together in August. Not sure if we can swing both, but we shall see.
It would be wonderful to meet some more folks & talk and learn. Sometimes it feels like the world that was missing has found me. ;~)

Sammarroq – you are quite welcome. Basically, if you get on Highway 58 and head towards Courtland and Franklin…you can’t miss it. They put out a great big sign at the Fairgrounds. And there is a diner in Courtland with the best home cooked food….plus, there’s a Dairy Queen with a terrific breakfast and burgers. Franklin is a bigger town with more hotels and eating places…just a short drive from Courtland as well.
Bee – hope you can make it….I know all too well about the traveling expenses. We will be going to East Bend for the day so we can spend at least one night for Cheroenhaka.
Kelley – you must have been sitting at the east gate near Lynette and Rose. We were on the other side of the east gate under the small white canopy.

We were sitting mainly under that big shade tree several feet from the entrance. I sat on the bleachers to take the pictures and to view the grand entry.
My sister and I plan on attending Chief Walts Pow Wow in July as well.
Hi Kelley. Is there a way to view your pictures in a bigger size? All I’m finding are thumbnails.
I have some photos from Sunday. Did they do the potato dance Saturday? That was fun to watch!
We are seriously thinking about Cheroenhaka. Anyone know if there’s a good place to camp near there?
Shirley, are you guys driving there from Greensboro or somewhere else? We might could form a caravan, if we decide to go.
