I am not sure whether there is American Indian in my family history or not. I have been searching for my great great grandmother in Wythe County, Virginia for a very long time. All I know about her is her name was Susan Ross. She had a son (my great grandfather), John Wesley Ross born Oct. 16, 1860 in Rural Retreat, Va. That part of the family history just dead ends there. Also John Wesley Ross married Alice Virginia Pierce who was born in Wythe County to parents, Andrew Jackson Pierce and Ellen Heldreth. Andrew Jackson Pierce was born in Wythe Co. on April 14, 1845. Andrew Jackson Pierce’s parents were Andrew Pierce and Susan Ross. I assuming this is a different Susan Ross, but don’t know for sure. Have been unable to find Andrew Pierce and Susan Ross either. Would appreciate very much any information
available on these.
August 27, 2009 at 4:09 pm #34215In checking the Dawes Rolls I have found 17 with the name of Susan Ross. 15 of those Susans are Cherokee. The other two are Choctaw. From the date the roll was done these are probably all later than the Susan I am looking for. Can anyone tell me how I find out a birth date for the names on this roll. I have a death certificate from Grayson County, Va. that I believe is the Susan Ross I am looking for. The birth date is 1824. The death date is 1891. It lists her parents as Cherine and ____ Ross. I have seen a photo copy of the original entry on the county forms.
August 27, 2009 at 4:09 pm #34298I have been trying to find a birth record for John Wesley Ross born Oct. 16, 1860 in Rural Retreat Virginia. Just finished reading the Wythe County Virginia birth records for 1860 and 1861. His birth was not recorded there. However I ran into only one Ross birth recorded in those two years. It was in 1861. The father was listed as Peter Powell Ross. The child was listed as Sampson Ross. The birth place was listed as Mt. Airy which was the old name for Rural Retreat. In checking the 1860 and 1870 census for Wythe County, Peter Powell Ross was not listed in either. Sampson Ross was not listed in the 1870 census for Wythe County.
Does anyone have any information on Peter Powell Ross?
August 27, 2009 at 4:09 pm #34299Hi Shardel,
According to the below message board post, Andrew Jackson Pierce’s parents are John Furr Pierce and Eliza Jane Jolly and the 1850 & 1860 census records agree.
Also see…http://awt.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=bfurr4&id=I5782
It looks like in the census records your Alice Virginia went mostly by “Virginia” or “Jennie” for short.
As far as trying to find a birth record for John Wesley Ross, you might go forward and backwards several years. Did his mother’s name of Susan Ross come from marriage license, death record, or family history? Have you found his family in the census records? I will look again for him, but I thought I seen a census year that “fit” him that was born ca1862.

Here are the census records I have found on John Ross. I am not sure if the 1850-1870 census are his family or not, but I included them because they mention a Susan Ross in Wythe Co.
Hope this helps,

John Carl born Mar. 12, 1900
From copy of original marriage record 1882:

From Alice Virginia Pierce obituary: She was the oldest of 17
children. The records I have show these as follows:

Copy of death record for Andrew Jackson Peirce:
Andrew Jackson Peirce, Aug. 21, 1888, male, 44 years,
4 months, 4 days, dropsy, POD Black Lick, farmer,
spouse, Ellen Peirce, mother Susan Peirce, informant-wife.
This leaves me with two original records that show Susan (Ross)
Peirce as Andrew Jackson Pierce’s mother. There is one original
record that shows Andrew Peirce as Andrew Jackson Pierce’s
father. I’m not just looking at transcriptions. A lady went in
and took photos of the original records for me. This makes me
think that John Furr Pierce and Elize Jane Jolly had a son named
Andrew Jackson Pierce, but not the Andrew Jackson Pierce in
my family.
I have been trying to find the two Susan Ross mentioned above
for over a year. The Ross families are very complicated. There
are many instances of different families having children with the
same name. There are also instances of two children in the
same family having the same name if one died.
Some confusion arose until I found that Andrew Jackson Peirce
and Ellen Heldreth had 4 of their 17 children before they
married and the other 13 after they married.
I really appreciate all the information you posted. Will go over
it very carefully. Thank you again.
August 27, 2009 at 4:09 pm #34303A couple of things I forgot to mention in the previous post. On the Nebraska
end of the line I have all the tombstones photographed and in my records.
John Wesley Ross is buried in a cemetery plot owned by the IOOF.
Also I think the John W. Ross that was born in Wythe County in 1862 was
a different John W. Ross. He was the son of Steven and Elizabeth Ross.
Also I believe that the reason Andrew Jackson Pierce and Ellen Heldreth
had 4 children before moving to Wythe County and marrying there was
because they were probably Quakers. They wanted to marry in the
meeting in Wythe County. Many Pierces and Heldreths were Quakers.

Hi Shardel,
I believe you are right. I found a few more trees for the Andrew, son of John Furr Pierce and Eliza Jolly, and they said he died 1864 during the Civil War.
I will look into this more later and see what else I can find with the new information.

August 27, 2009 at 4:09 pm #34306Stacey,
I really, really appreciate all your help.
I believe that the Jackson Peirce living with John Clemmons, the school
teacher is my Andrew Jackson Peirce. Also James Heldreth is probably
Ellen’s brother.
I have a court record that shows an Andrew Jackson Peirce (pauper)
bound out to Joel and Company. At the moment I would have to hunt
for the record in my two foot deep pile of notes. However this
particular Andrew Jackson Peirce was the correct age. Some of the
agreements for the person bound out included a minimum amount
of education. The age when he was with the school teacher matches.
250 acres of Rural Retreat remained in the ownership of Peter Cormany,
a son of Michael. These lands became the lands of Joel Company.
Peter’s son who married a sister of Solomon Buck, was named Joel.
Joel and Company remained in the hands of that family till the
early 1900s.
In one of the census records I have notes on I remember the Cormanys
living in Black Lick also.
I ran across one other interesting article early in my research which I
did not save and have never been able to find again. It was when
I was reading about the lead mines in Wythe County making shot
for the confederacy. In the article there was a mention of some kind
of boarding house for the mines. There was a really long list of mens
names and one woman. The woman was a Susan Ross.
Thank you again.
Found my notes: In The Lost Children of Wythe County 1790-1878 by Mary
Kegley on Page 186: April 8, 1853, Darius Gose, overseer of the poor, agreement
with Joel Company to bind out Andrew J. Pearce, a pauper till age 21, as
ordered by the court on December 13, 1852, to learn the trade of farming. To
have a good horse, saddle, bridle, and a good suit of “Janes” clothes at 21
and $12.
August 27, 2009 at 4:09 pm #34307Hi Shardel,
I am wondering if the Andrew Ross (age 6) in the 1850 census isn’t actually Andrew Pierce (b. 1845)? The ages were close enough and the names match what you found in the original records. Also, Susan’s birthdate (ca1824-25) in the 1850 & 1870 census matches the death record (67yrs in 1891) you have for J.W. Ross’ mother. That would make Andrew Jackson Pierce and John Wesley Ross brothers most likely half-brothers. I don’t think it was all that uncommon back then for uncles to marry nieces.
1850:
68th Dist., Wythe Co., VA; sheet 610; visit 1454/1454
Susan Ross, 26, VA
Andrew Ross, 6, VA
David Ross, 1, VA
One possibility for your Andrew (b. 1845) Pierce’s father was the Andrew J. Pierce (b. ca1820 – d. aft.1900) who was living in neighboring Smyth Co. in 1850. He later moved just across the border to Ashe Co., NC. I found death records for two of his children: Margaret (Pierce) Stump and John A. Pierce. According to both of them their mother’s name was Jane Scott and she was born in Rye Valley, Smyth Co., VA. One gives the father’s name as Andrew Pierce from Smyth Co., VA. The other gives the father’s name as Jake Peirce of Sussex, VA. Margaret is buried in Andrew Pierce Cemetery. I am not sure if this cemetery would be in Ashe Co or Smyth Co, but I did find a Pierce Cemetery in Atkins, Smyth Co that is about 15 miles from Rural Retreat. Atkins Precinct, Smyth Co is also, concidentally or not, where your John Ross and family, Andrew Pierce’s widow and children, and Heldreths were all living in the 1900 census.

August 27, 2009 at 4:09 pm #34308Stacy,
You are really good at genealogy research.:D
I agree with you on the first two paragraphs. I have been thinking the
same thing about the 1850 census listing Susan Ross. That Andrew
could possibly be the Andrew J. Peirce that married Ellen Heldreth.
I’ve also thought that possibly the two Susan’s were the same person
and John Wesley Ross and Andrew Jackson Peice could be half brothers.
Then I am slightly lost on the reasoning. I have seen all the census
records you mention. I do not have the cemetery records. The place
I get lost is in the 1850 census Margaret J. Pierce is listed as the
wife of Andrew J. Pierce. In the same 1850 census Susan Ross is
listed living with David and Andrew Ross. I do not think Margaret
and Susan were the same person. I do not follow how later you
think that Margaret was his daughter rather than his wife.
The scenario I’ve been kicking around in my head is that maybe this
is the same Andrew J. Pierce. The Andrew Jackson Pierce that married
Ellen Heldreth was born in 1845. Marriage records show that Andrew
J. Peirce married Margaret in 1846. I’m wondering if he could have
been living with Susan. Then he left her and married Margaret.
The possible reason that comes to mind for me is that if Susan was
native american according to Virginia law at the time only the
oldest white male child was entitled to inherit. Then he was
expected to take care of his mother.
Also none of the census for Andrew and Margaret Pierce list a child
named Andrew.
Hope you don’t mind my questioning your conclusions. I don’t mean to
be negative. I’m just trying to sort this all out. During my research
I have followed over 80 Susan Ross (both birth name and married
name) and keep coming up with something that doesn’t quite fit. If
I can figure out which Susan Ross these are I can probably put the
rest of the history quite a ways back from my notes.
Thanks for all the effort you are putting into this. I know what it
takes to find all the things you are finding. It really helps to have
another perspective on this from someone as apparently talented
at research as you are.
August 27, 2009 at 4:09 pm #34309Hope this doesn’t break any forum rules. I am using quick reply instead of edit
because I sometimes don’t get the edit added correctly.
The Andrew J. Pierce that married Margaret was the only Andrew Pierce in
Wythe County in 1840. A lot can change in the 5 years before 1845 when
the Andrew married to Ellen Heldreth was born, but there aren’t any census
records between then and 1850. The Andrew J. Pierce that was in Wythe County
in 1840 was the son of Moses Pierce. Moses Pierce had two wives-Bessie
Poole and Ellender Bird. Ellender Bird was the mother of Andrew. I have found
references that say she was native american. This is why I thought it was
a possibility that Susan Ross was also native american.
By the way I found the daughter named Margaret that you were talking about.
Her mother’s name was Margaret also.
Also I have old pictures of John Wesley Ross and his son, John Carl Ross.
Their facial features could easily be native american. Also one of the
pictures of John Wesley was with a horse of which he was particularly
proud. It is a beautiful paint.
August 27, 2009 at 4:09 pm #34311Hi Shardel,
Nope, don’t mind you questioning it at all. That’s what this is for.
The Margaret that was Andrew’s (b. ca1820) wife was Margaret Jane “Jane” (Scott) Pierce (b. ca1828 – d. aft1900). The Margaret that was their daughter was the one that was listed as 8 years old in the 1860 Ashe Co census above. She was Margaret (Pierce) Stump (b. 1851 – d. 1928).
I agree Margaret and Susan are not the same person.
My thinking was that the 1st Andrew Pierce (b. ca1820) was “together” with Susan Ross and they had the 2nd Andrew (b. ca1845). They could have been living together, married/divorced, or just had a child out-of-wedlock. Then, the 1st Andrew (b. ca1820) went on to marry Margaret “Jane” Scott in 1846. They then had their own children and moved to Ashe Co, NC.
In the meantime, Susan stayed in the Wythe Co area. If the census records we have of Susan Ross are indeed her, then she, at least, had the following children:
1) Andrew Ross/possiblyPierce (b. ca1845)
2) David Ross (b. ca1849)
3) H.(?) Hopas(?) (b. ca1854)
4) John Wesley Ross (b. ca1860).
The fact that the two census records we have on her (1850 & 1870) show her with no husband in the household, all the children still have the last name Ross, and you found evidence that John Wesley was bound out makes me think that all her children were born out-of-wedlock.
The following law is from the Colonial Era and I am not sure how long it was in effect, but it fits in with Andrew (abt age 8) being bound out until age 21:

Parents very often apprenticed or sent out their children to serve another family at around age ten. Children born out of wedlock were routinely separated from their mothers upon weaning and “bound out” to a master.
Some other things you might check into are:
*Cemetery Records
*Obituaries, if you don’t already have them
*The Lost Children of Wythe County 1790-1878 by Mary Kegley – look for Susan Ross’ other possibly children and see if they were also bound out
*Birth Record for John Wesley Ross’ – I would check Wythe Co and Smyth Co at least from 1857-1863
I will look later and see if I can find any census records of the other “possible” children of Susan Ross.
