Thank you Shardel. Would love to know who Thomas Turner’s parents were, if that’s in there. (Thomas md Matilda Daniel) Daniel Ross and Elizabeth Garth are supposed to be my ancestors. But, there are questions, because it does not match oral tradition, etc.
Anyway, something else you wrote caught my eye. You found Joshua Ross in Wythe Co. with parents Andrew Ross and Susan Lowry????? That is the oral tradition I was speaking of. Tlostama is the name handed down to us, but a cousin and I have yet to find anything linking him back to VA or our family.
Joshua’s parents went to OK, and most of the family appeared to have stayed there. One of the daughters married a VA man, though. Am very interested in looking at whatever you have found on them.
August 27, 2009 at 4:09 pm #34392This appears to be written by Joshua’s daughter, and does not match. Part of the delightful confusion.

August 27, 2009 at 4:09 pm #34393Beeleaf,
Thank you for the link, I will study that information carefully.
I found the information on Joshua Ross when I did a search for 1850
Smyth County Virginia Federal Census on New River Notes. It linked
me to the genweb project. Joshua was listed as entry 35-184-186.
Underneath the entry of the household which included 10 Ross there
was an added not that gave the information I posted previously.
Unfortunately Thomas Turner is not in the Chappell book. If you
look up his website there is an index that lists the names. If you
find a name in that index you would like information on I will be
glad to look it up.
I find what you posted very interesting also. My Ross ancestors
moved to Nebraska. My grandmother who was a Ross married a
McFarlane who was born in Nebraska, but his family was also from
Va.-Tazewell County. In my great grandmother Ross’s obituary
there was one brother still living in Missouri. Also I remember my
mother talking about an aunt who lived in Missouri. She was
married to a Litz who was also from Wythe County Va. The
strange thing is in the census I can find no record of the ones
in Missouri.
Also there is information that at one time Chief John Ross lived
in Plattsmouth Nebraska when he was hiding from the government.
From the information I have seen he was captured there.
If I find anything in my notes that might pertain to your family I
will be sure to post.

The Ross Chappell book has a large amount of information about
Daniel Ross married to Elizabeth Garth. There is also another
book available by Rosalie Edith Rogers Davis entitled “The Garth
Family”.
One thing I thought you might find helpful if you don’t have it.

August 27, 2009 at 4:09 pm #34395Thank you so much, Shardel.
Have considered purchasing the book, but not sure it comes forward far enough to help with my mystery. According to other researchers, we come from David in Patrick Co, via Samuel Anderson Ross. He is said to be my gg grandmother Mary Virginia (Jennie) Ross’ father. The physical description of him on his war record makes that seem kind of odd, but one never knows.
Another interesting Ross story is in a little booklet called “Cherokee Cooklore”. Learn to make bean bread the OLD way with Aggie Ross Lossiah. This is Chief John’s grand-daughter, who lived in Tennessee. She tells of living with her granny and other relatives in a cave along the Little Tenn. River when she was about 3. Judging from the date of the book (1951) and her age at the time it was published, she would have been born around 1881.
August 27, 2009 at 4:09 pm #34396Beeleaf,
Just trying to be helpful-
Samuel A. Ross, born 9 Dec. 1818, Patrick county, VA;died 12 Aug 1903,
married 26 Oct. 1843, Patrick County, VA, Esther J. Harbour (daughter of
Richard Harbour and Judith Nowlin), born 19 May, 1828, Patrick County, VA; died 19 Nov. 1923 in Patrick County, VA. Samuel A. Ross and Esther Harbour are buried in the David Ross Cemetery. The household of Samuel
A. Ross is listed in the 1850 census of Patrick Co. Va.
An entry in Samuel A. Ross’s Bible identifies him as a son of David and Sarah Ross.
The book identifies David Ross as the 6th child of Daniel Ross and Elizabeth Garth. It identifies Samuel as the 9th child of David Ross.
It also identifies Daniel Ross as the son of John Ross b. ca. 1695, Scotland, d. 1759 Hanover Co. VA who was married to Sarah (no
last name) d. 1772 Louisa Co. VA.
So according to this book whether your ancestor was Daniel Ross
or David Ross, they both were sons of Daniel Ross and Elizabeth
Garth and had the same grandfather.
I know this doesn’t help you determine which one. I’m sort of stuck
in the same place with my Ross family. Narrowed down to 4 in the
same time frame, but that one generation is really hard to track.
August 27, 2009 at 4:09 pm #34399I’ve been doing more research. Seem to come up with more questions
that answers, but have found some information that I find quite interesting.
The first thing I found was there seems to be a difference of opinion
about who was the father of Joshua Ross. Solid confirming information
has not been found yet. The first info I saw said that Joseph Ross was
Tlo-sta-ma and he was the father of Joshua. Then it was mentioned
that Tlo-sta-ma was David Ross. Further research has said it was
Andrew Ross. All three of these men are related. All of the information
names Susan Lowery as the mother.
The other thing I found interesting was when I was searching Dist. 68
Wythe County Virginia 1850 census. There were only two households
listed with Ross. One was Susan Ross 26 with Andrew Ross 6 and
David Ross 1. The other was Joseph Ross 20 (laborer) living with a
family named Holliday. Further research on Joseph Ross found Joseph
Henry Ross born Oct. 17, 1831 in VA. or TN.-died 20 Jun 1910 in Wash-
ington Co. Va. His father was Andrew Ross born NC. His mother was
Mary “Kitty” Catherine Leach born Va. This note was included with
that information: Andrew Ross had several wives and at least 20
children. I had run across this same Andrew Ross early in my search.
The information I found then said that he was a trader who traveled
over several states. He very actively traded with the native americans.
I found reference to 5 wives and between 20 and 30 children. He
seems to be a very elusive individual to find definite information on.
August 27, 2009 at 4:09 pm #34400Beeleaf,
Don’t know if you have seen this web site, but it has a lot of information on
the Daniel Family (NC). Among those mentioned is Matilda Daniel.
http://home.comcast.net/~p.a.miller/genealogy/docs/danieledgehalifnashwilson/index.htm
August 27, 2009 at 4:09 pm #34470Interesting stuff, Shardel. One Tlostama was Andrew Ross, Chief John’s brother. That was all I was able to find online, and left me scratching my head. My cousin only passed along Tlostama and the surname Ross. No first name. Maybe you have found a big clue there. Where was that info?
Other researchers have also listed Samuel’s father as David. What I need is a list of Samuel’s children and grandchildren. Wondering if that bible record has those? Am uncertain if that Samuel is our guy or not.
Would be good to put that link in the Daniel thread, if you haven’t already.
I don’t think that’s my Matilda, but there could be a connection.
Thanks for all you’ve shared.
August 27, 2009 at 4:09 pm #34471Beeleaf,
Sorry I didn’t make a note of the website that I found Andrew Ross listed as Tlo-sta-ma. I’ve got to start making notes of the websites I’ve visited. It’s just that I some
times go to over a hundred web sites in just one day. Usually I’m looking for something specific and go on to another site if it isn’t there. I do try to keep track
of things I think other people might be looking for. Will try to do better in the
future.
When I found that site I was looking for information on the children of Daniel Ross
and Mary McDonald and for information on the children of Reuben Ross and Mary
Teackle. I was trying to separate the information on the two Andrew Rosses that
were in Grayson and Smyth Counties. During the search a found that many of
the people researching the two had gotten information on the two families mixed
up. That just makes the search that much tougher. Still working on these two.
August 27, 2009 at 4:09 pm #34472Actually I was wondering where you saw something about Joseph and David being called Tlostama and living in VA. Andrew who md Susan Lowery is pretty well documented. Finding their relatives in Wythe County is an interesting surprise. The family did have ties to VA, but I thought most were living in OK at the time of the 1850 census .
August 27, 2009 at 4:09 pm #34473Beeleaf,
The note about Joseph Ross being called Tlo-sta-ma was on a transcription of
an 1850 census transcription. I don’t remember which county I was looking at-
probably Wythe, Grayson, Smyth or Washington.
The place I saw David mentioned as Tlo-sta-ma was in the one of the books
I was reading on Southwest Virginia Genealogy. I’ll look and see if I still have
that book. I’ve brought in many books on interlibrary loan. Many of them have
been returned already, but it might be in one of the ones I still have here.
This is another area where I should be keeping better notes. Usually I just make
a note of the interesting information and consider it just that until I can find
absolute confirming facts.
The information I gave you on Samuel Ross came from the Chappell book which I
find to be very well documented. Also there was a little information from a
cemetery record.
August 27, 2009 at 4:09 pm #34476Beeleaf,

August 27, 2009 at 4:09 pm #34504Beeleaf,
I’m still searching for the two Susan Ross. In the process I found this website
that might be of interest to you. It has a great deal of information on the
Turner families.
www-personal.umich.edu/~cgaunt/etc/comp2.txt
August 27, 2009 at 4:09 pm #35831I am still searching for the two Susan Ross that are ancestors. I recently found a Susan
Pierce in the 1860 and 1870 Halifax Co. Va. census. In 1860 there was a N B Pierce
living in her household. In the 1870 census he is living on the adjacent property. In his
household there are two people that I am interested in finding out more about. The first
is David Ross 76, male, black, laborer. The second is Betsy Ross, black, keeping house.
I’m thinking that both of these could be freed slaves or indentured servants. Also that
they could be white, mulatto, native american, or black.
(In my family tree there is Andrew Jackson Pierce married to Ellen Heldreth. The
marriage document lists Andrew Jackson Pierce’s parents as Andrew Jackson Pierce
and Susan Ross. More info about this is in the first post in this thread.)
Also while searching I foud a Marie Elizabeth Hildebrand, female, born 1796 married
to David Daniel Ross. It said they had 1 child. No further information has been found
about them.
Would appreciate any information anyone would care to share about these people.
Also would appreciate information on how to proceed to search for freedmen.
