5th Annual Roanoke Island American Indian cultural Festival and Powwow sponsored by: The Algonquian Indians of NC and the Roanoke and Hatteras Indians of Dare County, NC and will be held at: Airport Pavilion Lawn located on Airport Road across from the NC Aquarium.
No contest powwow. Admission Fee: Adults (13+)$5.00 Children (3-12)$3.00 Age 2 and Under FREE.
Presented by: ( The People of the Coast ) The Council of The Algonquian Indians of NC, Inc. and the Roanoke-Hatteras Indians of Dare County, NC as co-sponsors.
Time: The ground opens to the public at 10:30 a.m. for educational displays and the sale of American Indian crafts. Grand Entry on Saturday will begin at 12:00 Noon and at 1PM on Sunday. At various times during the day, the Master of Ceremonies will invite the public to participate in social dances. Educational displays will exhibit artifacts used and items traded by the American Indians. American Indian foods as well as other festival foods will be available for purchase. Additionally, all veterans and servicemen and servicewomen will be honored.

All native drummers, dancers, traders and food vendors are welcome. (Due to the nature of this event, no pets or alcohol allowed in the event area.) Lodging is very limited. So book early. Looks like we will be the only ones from our area headed to Manteo…will report back in when we return. Going to take a minivacation and stay through Monday…..can’t wait to see if the area feels “familiar” to me….since my grandmother told her kids we were descended from the Lost Colony….

It is wonderful to go someplace and “know”.
Well, it was a great weekend….a wonderful pow wow….very warm and friendly people…all that was missing was the rest of our “family”.
Even though this is a small pow wow, it is definitely worth putting on your list for next year. The town has lots of history to offer…along with good seafood. Rick and Birdchoppers did a wonderful job of being able to keep on moving after thunderstorms forced everyone inside on Sunday….but, the spirit was still strong…..and we had a blast!!
Oh, btw, I did have an “interesting” encounter with the seagulls…

What’s amazing is the fact that she wasn’t “anointed” when a tribe of about 20 seagulls swarmed her to welcome her home 😉
Dreaminghawk, I apologize if my remarks seemed frivolous but you know how Becky likes to joke. Living down here on the coast we are well aquainted with our own “national” bird. Our daughter got anoionted right in the mouth a couple of years ago while at the fourth of July fireworks.
If you were swarmed by that many at one time and no other incidents it certainly says you are one special lady and an amazing reception! Your time at Roanoke Island must have been very special. Ed
That’s the interesting part…there was bread laying on the ground..but, they didn’t touch it. And nope, no poop…although, I have heard that is good luck.
Ed….felt like a scene out of The Birds….have never really been a fan of seagulls since some in England gave me a scare when they approached us while we were eating…but, these were different. Trick to looking up….keep your mouth closed…LOL.
For those of you attending King pow wow this weekend, make note that grand entry is at 11:00. We almost missed it last year….because most of them are at noon.
After dark, they light a fire in the circle…and that was really cool last year. I thoroughly enjoyed it. That’s the pow wow where I got my boots…an early birthday present…LOL.

Yeah, this will be my one year anniversary for dancing…this was my initial sendoff last year. With orders from Mrs. Jeannie to get in the grand entry line….and it was Ken’s first dance with regalia. So it’s pretty special to us…are you guys camping or motelling? Have you heard from the rest of the gang??

There is a out door play around the Dare NC area…….It’s for the Lost Colony of Roanoak and the Croatans….there is a website for it.
I’ll be visiting that area hopfully before the year is out…I’m going to be meeting up with some researchers out there because I have Little’s and Johnson’s in my family tree that can only be traced back to the late 1600’s dare county….their kids married each other…..the lost colony name list shows two men that came without wives…named Little and Johnson. Anyway…if your ever out that way….the play if pretty cool, they have the people painted up…not too often you get to see that…also you can get to see how the europeans might have interacted with the natives.
